    Hey Jeff - you’re not lazy - you’re very clever using your original rear shock mounts as a jig for the welding job 😜

    My uncle worked on the east African rally team. they gifted him the car a few years later. Ended up his garage for 15 or so years in the UK. He eventually gave it back to Nissan, who fully restored it, now its sitting in a museum somewhere in Japan. He then went to work on the R34, so sick. i wish i knew the significance of the car when i was 4, to persuade him to keep it but, there was only so much i could do lol.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 лет назад

      That is very cool. Would have been a great legacy, but in some ways restored in a museum is the best way to make sure is can be shared by everyone ;)

    4:10-I believe it's not uncommon to fill the strut with oil to help keep the shocks cool by absorbing heat (transfer) etc.. so it's likely smelly old oil in there. :D

    • @TheSOMotorsports
      @TheSOMotorsports 5 лет назад

      Yep, it is the same for 1st gen Rx7s. You need to fill the gap between the shock and the housing so that the heat transfers and doesn't cook the shock.

    As I'm busy dismantling the suspension on my 911 right now I see this as a great opportunity to renew parts which are the better part of four decades old... And of course, throw in a few improvements ;-)
    You don't want to explore that option on the 240Z at the moment then?
    Of course, my car was only supposed to be off the road for a few months, before the "while we're at it" bug caught me... So I guess I can understand the desire to "move on" quickly...

    Best way to check the test-weld is cut it to get a cross section view of the penetration.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 лет назад

      Definitely, these welds are just to stop it falling off under rebound as opposed to taking the weight of the car. Even if they were holding the car, I am very confident of the penetration.

  • @EarlLeeBird

    To be on the safe side, always remove the shock insert bottle, or in your case the bottom sleeve/tube only, when welding anything related to coilovers, even if its only oil and no gas shocks.

    • @ModifyOrDie

      If it helps - We're now using epoxy based etch primer, or epoxy primer. Good stuff, you can also work over it, unlike etch.

      If only welding on a threaded collar to a strut it must be welded top and bottom by a capable welder."or words to that effect"
      Its covered under the general welding in the Low Volume guide.
      Any more than that yep ticketed welder, with crack test report, whole nine yards.
      Just been through it all on my 1600/510 build.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 лет назад +1

      Yes I would say it does need to be certified, but you also have to remember that it is not holding the weight of the car. It is basically only stopping it falling off in rebound.

    • @HomeBuiltByJeff
      @HomeBuiltByJeff  5 лет назад +2

      A threaded collar being welded to the strut is holding the weight of the car, so it is much more critical. This is not.

    Looking at your flare mounting at 11:22, are the 'washers' countersunk type like the screws?
    Think you might need button head screws and the appropriate finishing washers
    Eg, www.essentracomponents.com.au/images/stories/virtuemart/product/SR1946_1.jpg
    It looks like you have Type3 screws with Type4 Finishing Washers

      @@HomeBuiltByJeff If you're looking at the front of the car while on the ground and see the front control arms parallel to or angled higher than the front crossmember inner mounting locations, then you should consider roll center adjusters to correct the geometery. This is a common occurrence on lowered Z's and can greatly affect drivability. One fix for this is to use an aftermarket front crossmember such as ApexEngineered or to drill 1/2" up and 1/2" out from the stock inner control arm holes, weld in a new inner washer, slightly modify the tops of the control arms for clearance and you're golden.

  • @jackosmeister

      That's odd as many of the competitive vintage Z racers still utilize the rear drums with upgraded shoes. Most rear disc conversions for the Z screw things up badly, they tend to throw off the brake bias so much that the rears don't bite enough.
