Matt Re: @ 47:00 where you write off the squad's Pelosi vote as meaningless, you're missing the point. It's not about influencing the outcome of that vote. It's about exhibiting the kind of consistent principled behavior that builds movements. We all know Pelosi's final term is going to be an absolute fucking disaster, so this is not even a gamble. Voting against her in both rounds would have signaled to everyone that the squad represent a credible alternative. Yet another opportunity missed. They get so few opportunities, it's just about a war crime that they wasted this one.
One year anniversary of the progressives voting for Nancy Pelosi and getting NOTHING in return! One year of the progressives FAILING to use leverage at every turn! ForceTheVote was correct AF, and we've been proven right all year!
The smug, loud guy, ranting about the intent of the squad, etc. is simply wrong on this. The whole idea is that people could hold their vote for Nancy Pelosi in exchange for something, which they didn't do or seem to try, especially since they campaigned on medicare for all. A majority of the country including some conservatives wants some type of healthcare/medicare for all system. How much more "will" do you need to start the ball rolling dude?
Can you tell me what a failed floor vote would tell us that we don't already know? If there are fake co-signers to the bill right now, they could safely cast a fake yes vote during a vote that's going to fail anyway
@@the-craig Here's what the failure to even stage a vote did tell us: The squad aren't willing to even make a symbolic gesture towards their stated goals, even when there is absolutely no cost to doing so. AOC is never going to get her prized committee chair. You know that. I know that. The whole world knows that. Pelosi has never made her deep hatred of AOC a secret. Convincing herself that she has some incrementalist shot at the Cursus Honorum is just an exercise in willful ignorance. A lot of politics is performative, just making a commitment to the group, demonstrating trustworthiness, not achieving an immediate substantive result. That's not 'nothing', it's just the un-glamorous part of the job she signed up for. If the squad aren't going to do even this easiest part of the job of building a true Left coalition, I have to conclude that they are either hopelessly incompetent or hopelessly insincere.
@Julian Pasqual You're missing a couple critical points. First, everyone knows that the # 1 priority in building a mass movement (one among many, but the first in sequence) is to get media attention. With AOC and the squad wasting precious bandwidth, the task of building a genuine Leftist movement becomes more and more difficult. It's not just that they're they're wrong, it's that they're getting in the way of a real solution. That's incredibly relevant. Second, which is a matter of debate out of the scope of this discussion of the squad, is whether a labor movement really is the most effective path forward for Leftist populism. Yang is controversial for a lot of well-founded reasons, but I don't think it can be seriously contested that his analysis of labor relations is fundamentally correct, at least in the context of the current size of the labor supply. Technology and global economic integration mean that the supply of labor is far too large with respect to the number of required laborers for any labor movement to exert much political leverage. I see no events suggesting to me that this trend is going to reverse itself anytime in the foreseeable future. That sucks because, lacking a clear model we can pull from history in order to create an effective Left populist movement today, we have to spend a lot of time inventing one. This is my bottom line: The Left needs real leadership. The squad ain't it, and they're just wasting everyone's time.
