I am actually knitting my own hexipuffs as I am watching this. I am doing my project a little different: it is also a temperature blanket, each hexipuff is double knit so it has a cool side and a warm side.
Genius!! I don’t have a CSM but I could try this on my flat bed knitting machine! As long as your gauges are close-ish, the 3 methods of handknit, csm and flatbed could really keep it interesting and moving quickly. Can’t wait to see the finished result!
I have a 1925 autoknitter that I got at a craft fair and it’s my favourite purchase ever! Still learning but I’ve gotten about 4 pairs of socks down since I got it.
@@kaytiej8311 I have done a little bit of knitting, many years ago, but it's not really my thing and I have no current plans to knit anything. I have lots of plans for sewing projects though! (Some involving fabric paint, or embroidery, or custom digital printing, but none involving yarn. My mother is very much a yarn person though.)
Yes please, I would like to see Hexipuff progress updates. It helps me with my procrastination (aka inability to complete WIPs when I've lost that lovin' feeling) Also, would it really be a crime to make the puffs bigger??? All I can think of is all the hand sewing, the joining, the stuffing, the inevitable WIP... bigger puffs = less hand finishing.
So much fun! Thanks for sharing. When pattern first came out I worked out how to do a chain of hexipuffs on a double bed knitting machine, in a chain, stuffing as I went. I must find that pattern again. Thanks again!
A chain of hexipuffs would mean less setup time adding waste yarn. That would be awesome, and really crank out a long chain of hexipuffs just to get one of the borders going. Wondering if you re-use waste yarn over and over it'll become unuable, and just fold it inside the hexipuff with a little bit of stuffing?
Yes, please, share progress. I love the idea of using waste yarn scraps as stuffing. I just collected my ends from a striped (ball ends) knitted throw for my kid to use to stuff her little crocheted 🐙 and 🦑 stuffies.
Oh cool! I've been (very slowly), hand knitting my own hexipuff blanket, and yeah, it takes A While, especially if you want something actually blanket-sized! The sock machine is -amazing-!
As a process knitter who always has an ongoing project but has very few finished projects, I think having the ability to modularly do both hand knitting and CSM knitting is PERFECT for keeping up momentum, variety, and reducing overwhelm. (plus the scrappiness makes it fun to return to in between other projects) I think I'd always have enough for one or two hexies in my purse for waiting around at places, but then having the CSM set up at home for longer sessions would be nice too. Is this just my way of convincing myself to invest in a CSM? Maybe lol
Have a look into flat bed knitting machines- for me, it was way more affordable than a good circular one! They do take a lot more room... but if you get one with a ribber, you can knit in circular too, and do plenty of larger projects 😊
okay hear me out, I've been looking at my scraps and thinking about using my sentro circular knitting machine to do a puff quilted thing. It has 22 pins and it's really easy to make a nice little puff, you would probably need to lower the number of pins you're working on in the round, and to close up each puff you'd cinch it shut on either end, stuff it and THEN finish it, it would possibly add some interesting texture to the blanket because the cinched puffs would have a different look compared to the heel/toe puffs! with this being a scrappy project it's a great time to experiment :)
This is going to be such a beautiful blanket once its complete! I have been watching Claude make hers. Unfortunately knitting and I don't get along. I may have to look up a crochet hexipuff stitch pattern though.
Ugh I love this sew much. Love Claude, would love to see a collab some day. And thank you! I now know what those thingamabobbins are that my dad found at the antique store! And what to call them!
So fun! I recently started a Ten Stitch blanket to use up my scraps. I am really enjoying it. I honestly can't imagine knitting so many puffs on the CSM. I think I would much prefer hand knitting them. But I also knit primarily to pass time and enjoy the process of knitting. Also I don't think my disabled body would be happy with the cranking motions of the CSM versus the smaller motions of knitting by hand. That said, I would love to try out a CSM sometime. Though, I do need a deep heel for my socks, so it would take lots of trial and error to make socks that would fit me.
What fun! I’ve been thinking about getting a CSM. More uses always good. 🙂 I’d love to see your progress. And I love the idea of adding on to the project from time to time. Like a knitters quilt where each hexagon reminds you of a past project. 😁
This was a great video! I tried a hand knit hexagon puff, but love the idea of using the CSM. Will have to try it. I could see making a pillow rather than a whole blanket.
I have never seen such a reel/swift as this! It is nice to see it clamp to the table. The ones I have seen are made of wood but I like this one. I knit by hand but have respect to see what can be done on machines. It is interesting to see you try out different ways to make things. Thank you.
Agghhhaaaa!!! 🎉👏🥳 this is soooo exciting!! Now I want a csm even more than I did before this video! ❤ and I have to agree with you, that antique wooden box is awesome. 😎
Someone else in the comments mentioned they used a double bed (I think that’s what they called it) knitting machine to make a row of puffs strung together. So clever.😊
If there are any more videos in this series, I would love to see them. If you could both post in description and pin a comment, that would help helpful. Thank you.
This is making me have the hubris to try all sorts of small-scale panel knitting on the CSM you induced me to buy 🤔 Stuffies coming soon to a Christmas near me haha
I enjoy the video's where your knitting machines make an appearance, so any videos you make with them are welcomed and enjoyed. Does your new CSM have a finer gauge (more stitches per inch) than the 3D printed one? I thought the 3D printed CSM had a large stitch? Oh well, it's all good stuff!!
Yes I'd like to see how the blanket gets made. Did you say that you have two hexipuffs on the machine? How many can you make before having to take them off?
I would love one of these machines, but man it looks like learning to play a piano to make it work. Definitely a totally different skill from handwork.
Would you need “waste” wool for each piece or can you knit them on a row? Speaking of lace in your outro made me realize, you might love bobbin lace if you give it a try.
Can you make a bunch of puffs back to back like you can sock tubes and just graft them closed after say 3 or 4 instead of setting up a new one each time?
I have long thought that maybe I should take my yarn scraps that are long enough tie them together in a certain sequence and use them to create something
I really want to try and 3D print my own CSM. I want to make knee high or thigh high socks. However, 0 CSMs have enough needles for my size. If I edit a 3D printed one, I could add more needles 🤔
Im really interested in getting a knitting machine, but i dont like socks, and the straight ones are so large. I always wondered if I could use a rotary one for thin, long rectangles. Basically, like one row off a granny square blanket. Im sure that would be fun
Couldn’t a person use a csm to knit a row of hexipuffs, say 3 together?! I’ve been hand knitting for years but have never had the opportunity to play with a csm. So I’m not sure if that’s a feasible idea or not. 😅
YES - I definitely want to see how the hexies and the blanket progresses! 🎉
~jealousy intensifies~
Saving up for that CSM too, eh? 😉
@@MaireColclough oh I have a cunning plan mwah haha! (It's not that cunning. I just have access to a 3D printer 😁)
@@RetroClaude oooOoo....useful for so many crafty things! 😁
I immediately thought of you when I saw this video 😂
I don't know why but so exciting to see some of my favourite crafters in the same place. A fan of you all!
I would be a sock producing nightmare with one of those. I love socks

I think knitters worldwide can empathize with starting a project without doing a gauge swatch because the excitement is too strong!
I have a 1925 autoknitter that I got at a craft fair and it’s my favourite purchase ever! Still learning but I’ve gotten about 4 pairs of socks down since I got it.
Hooray for using up scraps! I definitely want to see when there are more of them and you start sewing them together!
Do you knit? Will you be trying some kinf of yarn craft on your channel?

@@vincentbriggs1780 well, I'm looking forward to seeing those projects, very much!
Also yes that box is super cool
Yes, I definitely want to see your hexipuff blanket progress!
Being a Montrealer I’m very jealous of that box 😊

Yes 🙌 I wonder how many of us are considering hexi puffs for literal years

CSM for the win 👏🏼 I have been looking for one forever, I made myself a promise I would get one second hand but it’s taking forever 😂
If I have natural fiber scraps, I compost it...but watching you use that beautiful machine is LIFE 😊
I'd love to see the ongoing story of this blanket. Please do a video of your process stuffing with yarn scraps and joining the puffs!
What a fun video-our machines do not come in such cool boxes-thank you for sharing this wonderful craft!
Just rewatched the original video from tiny owl knits, and saw the date it was posted… 10 years ago, on October 9th! 🎉
Brilliant use of the CSM! Would love to see the hexipuff blanket as it grows.

Another comment mentioning doing that very thing, one side was cool and the opposite side was hot.
Yes please on the progress of blanket thank you

I just looked at this yesterday and I may try crocheting a bunch of hexies to make a puffy quilt!
