Geno Smith is a remarkable quarterback, who because of the way his game has evolved could be called "the professor." Amazing arm talent. Why would Grubb need Penix when he has this guy? I'm hardpressed to find good comps for him when he is playing at, say, the level he was against Dallas, and even there he was having to work very fast because pass pro so atrocious/nonexistent. My feeling is he will be a top producer for 5 to 7 more years and may very well take a superstar turn under Grubb and Macdonald, and I dint think a superbowl this season is farfetched at all. think about it, if the offensive line is solid this offense could absolutely light it up, and the defense is likely to be competent at a bare minimum, good if not amazing. I think Geno at $30m a year for four years, structured to create cap room this year, is a solid plus ev bet if his agents will take it, say four year (total) redo/extension for 24, 25, 26, 27 for $140m with $110m guaranteed and last year backloaded I make that deal if i can, if he looks great in training camp etc

This is why I wanted to draft a QB as well as Howell, if Geno is good and we don't extend him and Howell is not good we are in a bad spot. I disagree with part of your assessment though, Geno could not have gotten more than we gave him. Nobody was offering it (or the reports are wrong) and the fact is that while he is at least as talented as Goff with his arm, Goff has proven he can win and Geno has not. A lot of that was Goff being on better teams than Geno, but that's just the luck of the draw. If we are good enough to make the playoffs and even win a game, Geno will not be giving us a discount -- not after the twitter rant. He already feels disrespected it seems by the fan base. The plan may have always been to move off of Geno though, which is why I still think we do NOT extend him. I think we try out Howell and draft a QB next year, ride out Geno's contract.

    • @jarrettchristensen_music

I wanted them to draft a QB because Howell has limited upside because of his processing speed. Next years qb class is pretty much all developmental prospects that are mote athlete than QB or solid Qb prospects that have less arm talent than Howell.

Geno gets paid as the 16 best QB and plays about there in skill. Jared Goff gets paid as the second best QB and plays likely around the 10th best QB...that math doesnt add up. Detroit is setting itself up for colapse more quickly then we all expect. Paying St Brown as one of the highest WRs, Goff as the QB2 in the league, and Sewel as the top offensive lineman. You pay guys over their actual value then other parts of your roster begins to fall and the guys you are paying have to take on the extra weight and they usually cant do it.

  • @calebyost9228

The main difference between the two is playoff wins and experience. Goff got the rams to a Superbowl and Detroit to the NFC Championship. Thats what the NFL pays for. Go look at the Flacco contract compared to what he actually contributed to each of those teams. The NFL doesnt pay QBs based on being "good" during the regular season, they pay for Playoff wins. Thats why Purdy who is about an average QB will get paid top dollar next season.

Goff played extremely well last season and got paid appropriately. Geno has been HAD by the Hawks. There was no way Geno could have achieved his contract incentives given our fly-blown O-line which was ranked 30th in the league. The real question concerning Goff is: can they pay Goff and still maintain that talented O-line the Lions need to have for Goff to perform well? Goff is far less effective behind an average O-line.

I know it's not the point of the vid, but I see the Lions making the same mistake the Hawks did with Russ - a team where the defense was the reason they were winning, and then they overpay their game-manager QB. For us, I don't think we'll make the same mistake again. I love Geno, but I don't think he'll command that kind of salary - not with a defensive coach and a passable backup with starting experience. Thankfully, I think Geno's more of a team-player than Russ was: he'll want to get paid, but he won't break the team doing it.

Goff benefits from having one of the top offensive lines, coordinators, and weapons in the NFL, all of which greatly enhance his chances of success. On the other hand, Geno is a superior quarterback to Goff but faces challenges with a new, inexperienced offensive coordinator, a weak offensive line, and the league’s worst defense, though he does have excellent offensive weapons. If Grubbs can replicate his college performance in the pros and the offensive line improves significantly, Geno could not only enter the MVP conversation but also secure a lucrative contract. John Schneider is aware of this and is strategizing for long-term relevance and potential success, though this approach may not provide the best immediate support for his quarterback.

If Grubb elevates Geno like he did Penix then he will have a great season. I wouldn’t mind extending Geno out to 3 years with an out after year 2. My guess is that if Geno gets us to the playoffs this year and the NFC championship game the next season (as Goff did), he could try to do what you said and tell the Seahawks he's worth $55M and they will let him walk, because another team still would not give Geno half that much, and he will be back in Seattle playing for $30M a year. Remember, Geno would be 36 that following season. Nobody is going to give a 36 year old career journeyman QB $55M a year. The lions are no longer a Super Bowl contender after this move. They don’t have any money.

they've kept their star tackle, their star reciever, and their star qb, had a solid draft, and went to the nfc championship last year, I think they're just fine to win a superbowl lmao5

U dont know holmes apparently lol. We had $90m for next year already. Go check out amon ra and sewell cap projections...4 year contracts spread over 6 years...much less than contract details showed. Goff will be the same. Doing the deals a year early gives them ultra flexibility. Our front office is elite elite at this stuff now. Our cap space is still plentiful...watch.

@JohnFischer-yb1xf Bro, you just paid the mother of all bags to Jared freaking Goof. The chances this isn't an overpay are basically nothing.
