I live in Japan and I think another reason for the popularity of the iPhone comes from the mobile networks. In Japan, only certain phones are compatible to work here. Even if your phone is unlocked and compatible with the Japanese network bands, it still might not work. I had an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 which covered Japanese network bands but because it wasn't listed on my phone carrier's site of compatible devices, it didn't work.
    iPhones have no compatibility issues.
Now I'm using a OnePlus 5 on Docomo with no problems even though it's not on their compatibility list. It's a bit of a crapshoot.

About Samsung, it’s a very unpopular brand on Japan due to their Korean roots, it seems that there’s some discrepancy between Japan and South Korea. Even Samsung had to rename all their devices lineup suppressing all references to their brand, that’s why they sell their phones as just “Galaxy” in Japan.

Straight up though, I don't understand why we can't all just use both android and apple. You get the best of both worlds by just swapping between the two every time you get a new phone.
Or have a cheap 1 or 2 year+ old refurbished iPhone as your main phone for texting/ calling/ facetiming with other people, alongside buying your android of choice for media consumption and overall more smartphone features.

  • @cosporcos

    Xiaomi Mi A1 (android)
i find the iphone too expensive, too locked behind a ecosystem i don't use (apple) i don't make use of any of their services so i don't really miss anything from apple's ecosystem, as for android i actually use google's ecosystem, chromecast, chrome as a browser on my desktop, gmail as my personal email, so that's basically why i find it more confortable to use an android phone.
Android can also be simplistic if you choose a launcher and apps that make it simple to use, but if you want a little more or even a lot more you can always get it on android while on iphone you get what apple decides you are going to get and that's it.

My phone is Android and a Google Pixel 2 XL! I love how it functions and quickly it responds, plus it has incredible camera quality, minor the blue hue you see when you turn the brightness down when you scroll through feeds, pictures etc. But it's just like any other Android phone, very easy to use, updates are not a pain, you can access time, date/day and find out what notifications you have without putting your pin in, other than that the only downside is not having a lot of case designs; the phone cases are very expensive and there's not many custom ones you can buy either which saddens me because I've always wanted a custom phone case! It's really good in terms of sturdiness because I've dropped it that many times, I haven't seen a single crack! I recommend the Google Pixel phones, they're super sweet and I don't think I'll ever change my mind when it comes to buying another type of phone again!!!

My phone is Vivo, (y12s) it was hard at first but once I got used to the new system of it (I'm an Samsung person, it was a whole new world to me), I made it turn into an iPhone customization especially the phone cases. Phone cases for vivo was really hard to find since my country is popular with Apple or oldest phones which makes me infuriating (and sometimes other phone brands, it's just so annoying!)
As said, just get an iPhone. It's better than losing a temper when it comes for phone cover cases. But I'll get one in the future (but Vivo is kinda good unless you treat it fairly and excellent. Phone battery only lasted longer hours if you keep it untouched but if touched, it will short the long hours of usage)

I think is Ideology. I've seen so many videos and documentaries about Japan, and I don't understand why they are so in love about the U.S.' ideology. I mean, 70 years ago they smash your country TWICE. And now, it's like the most of japanese have forgotten history (except for the most of the oldest japanese)
When I watched Zankyou no terror, I kind of understand the situation; in the anime there's been said that Japan is a country where its honor was taken away.
U.S. also used ideology to "destroy" the URSS, Germany (cold war), Japan, and I don't know about other countries. So Madonna, Michel Jackson, Apple, Comics, Coca Cola... Are the key, or better said, are the face, because I don't know what's the key.

You have no idea how happy I was when I was able to find cases in Japan for my 5.5in Android phone. And it was at Comiket, of all places. Almost everything was iPhone-sized, so I was really sad when I was shopping around back in 2017.
It's kind of interesting how many misconceptions the Japanese have about the iPhone, like virus resilience. Since it's a popular phone, it obviously gets targeted more often because there are more victims to infect. It is true that it is a simple OS, and that is probably its strong point.
