They way his voice gently breaks down when he gets to the words cigarettes and magazines, it perfectly represents the moment Kevin realizes this is about him and he becomes completely vulnerable, this is such a great scene and an even greater performance.
I love when drama is played like this, when it’s surrealistic locations and situations, but the emotion is played completely straight. The dramatic weight of the protagonist’s action seem so much more impactful when the stakes are this abstract but still so rooted in relatable emotion
I couldn't agree more. This, to me, is what art is about. Telling great stories with bigger than life characters, using all those things at our disposal (great actors, great movie sets, the unlimited power of imagination) to highlight our most intimate (and therefore most powerful) feelings.
I’m sure you’ve seen it already since you already mentioned you loved things of this nature but if you haven’t I highly recommended Twin Peaks. Pretty much the godfather of surrealism in television. As bonkers as Leftovers is nothing will be more batshit insane than The Return imo.
I remember when I first watched this and agreed with Kevin Garvey that the whole idea seemed "stupid"...then getting filled with emotion and swept away with the song. Perfection
I've never found a show yet, which compares to the way this show had me all crying in my feeling every two seconds.. my fav show of all time. It made me feel when I thought I was a cold person. Shortly after watching the first time I had a bleeding on the brain. I nearly died and I swear when I was in my brain surgery I dreamed.. I saw my son. Then the doctor tells me you don't really dream under anaesthesia. I wonder if I went somewhere.
I don't know how to express to my friends how incredible The Leftovers is. I showed my girlfriend this scene last year, and she legitimately went, "holy shit," then started asking me context questions.
What a terrible scene to show someone who has never seen the show. You spoiled the climax of the entire season. Words could never give enough context to what built up to this scene.
Pourquoi tu devrais retrouver ta famille? Parce que je le mérite ! Il est tellement émouvant quand il chante avec cette voix brisée. Une série qui restera a jamais dans mon cœur ❤️
Season 2 is one of the greatest seasons of tv I've ever seen. The writing and performances were spectacular. This show never got award recognition but the people who saw it know it was spectacular. This scene is a perfect allegory for art in general. We all fear opening ourselves up to performing as it seems “silly” and any people refer to art as just “silliness.” But when we expose ourselves to art it can move us and bring us to realizations like nothing else out there, just like this song saved Kevin.
It’s one of the greatest examples of all time of the emotion that can be evoked by combing an iconic piece of music with an iconic dramatic scene. It is perfect in all of the flaws the scene portrays.

@@charlierunkle19little column A, little column B. The show wasn’t marketed very well but even if it had it wouldn’t appeal to as many people as something like Game of Thrones or even Breaking Bad did because the show is much more introspective and complex, and has less action scenes so it’s harder to keep people who don’t want to get into the depths of the storyline engaged.
@@evangelionl0vr857 yeah idk what I was thinking a year ago tbh, it's definitely not just marketing. You're totally right, not everyone wants a complex show. I don't always either. I'm glad I stuck with The Leftovers though.
Idk if people feel this later when finding this show now but this episode was absolutely perfect given we didn’t know if it would be renewed. The stakes of not know what would happen was unbelievable.
The ratings weren't good and rumours about a cancellation were being spread. Even the way they announced the third season was like 'alright, we'll give 6 episodes and that's it'. That's why I'm convinced they wrote the second season thinking the show might get dropped. Never seen a season were every episode ended on a cliffhanger that could have easily been the last or second to last episode of any other show.
I was so sure that the song would be Never Gonna Give You Up because Patty kept singing it in the beginning of season 2, but when I heard first words I jumped. Homeward Bound is a S&G song that I used to listen a lot a year before and boy was I tearing up. Kevin is great.
@@amaanahmed5744I fell in love with Kevin from season 1, as his storyline follows a lot of the struggles I faced as a man slowly closing in on the middle years of my life, so as a result I felt a lot of resentment towards Nora because of the way she treated Kevin. He definitely wasn’t innocent in their relationship issues but she also confirmed the fears he had about opening up when she left him the first time.
Cuando Kevin canta, las expresiones y como se va dando cuenta de lo que está perdiendo, es una locura. Como espectador me quedé atónito, no recuerdo haberlo sentido con otra serie.
Every time I see the show I say "whow" to myself. The greatness and emotion of this moment is all in this extraordinary desire to resist of a man to "return" and cling to life. With all his strength, with every little frame that can give him hope to resist. Every single face, thought of love and affection for his family are a small brick. Unforgettable scene. Light and immense in intensity at the same time. How great Justin Theroux is.I love it.
This is the greatest show that's ever existed, this also the greatest acted show that's ever existed, my views and my views alone but I've had a hug from Wayne so I'm at peace with my decision!!!
Exactly! The way he closed his eyes and waited reminds me of when I was little and had nightmares, I would close my eyes and try to wake up. They waited just the right amount of time for you to doubt it's gonna work, then smash-cut to him gasping for air. One of my favorite shows of all time.
The show is basically about the human condition and how we believe we are special, and one day it’s confirmed true, but not for everybody. It’s all about tragedy and coming to terms with it. Human sacrifice. This scene is especially beautiful because Kevin wants to go home so badly he’s willing to do something that just seems stupid. It’s singing a song. Who cares? It means nothing. Yet it’s his only ticket. And he has been through so god damn much to get to that stage. I love this show.
Kevin legit died and he was slowly coming to terms with the fact he may never see his family again as he progressed through the song. If this stupid karaoke resurrection ritual doesn't work, he's stuck in this shitty afterlife hotel while his family is alive and will eventually find his murdered body. Kevin is going through the 5 stages of grief from the moment he wakes up in the bathtub and puts on the uniform to the moment he starts crying on stage. And it's all coupled with his guilt that maybe he did a lot of things wrong in his life regarding his kids, Lorrie, and Nora.
We all want to find "home." But like Kevin, maybe we don't appreciate what we have until we are faced with losing it. Humans are pretty good at taking things for granted. We have no control over anything and the connections we have, our homes/family, are sometimes the only thing making any of this ridiculousness worthwhile.
All of the responses so far have said it wonderfully. I'd like to add that there was an undertone this season of Kevin grappling with suicidal ideation, or at least complete apathy towards his life and wondering if he had some subconscious suicidal ideation -- so this song is his moment of realization of everything he has to lose, and all the reasons he wants to live.
Just watched this scene last night I swear after international assassin I had no fuckin clue what’s was going on but seeing this scene made everything make somewhat sense of the arcs everyone is going thru
I just accidentally without knowing listened to the original song and wondered where have I listened to this song? and it shock me for a second that it was this show and this amazing scene.
This evokes a lot of the same emotions that the episode "Join the Club" did in The Sopranos. The scene with Tony looking at the phone in his hotel room with "when it's cold I'd like to die" playing. Both characters are in a place of life and death just trying to get back. Although Kevin has a lot more control over his situation
I watched the Leftovers before I watched The Sopranos so I didn’t realize they had gotten that hotel afterlife idea from The Sopranos but goddam am I thankful they did because it was such an awesome way to portray what they were going for.
