First, Gary had just seen how miserable Marshall was when his mom introduced and humiliated (?) him in public like that, which necessitated him to stand up for his "friend". Second, after meeting and being treated badly by the Lemon sisters like that, I don't think that he would like to form new relationships with the cream of the society at that party outright at least for a while. Last but not least, what made it more dramatic and fascinating for the ending of an episode and a scene in which 2 people ran away from a party of the elite: ✨the son of the hostess and his commoner "friend" kissed each other✨ Moreover, that they are destined to be with each other in every universe, combined with the fact that this show only has 10 episodes, makes me think that their relationship is really wholesome, adorable, and maybe more bonding than some long-term couples.
