I see a lot of people are taking the piss out of GMBN for making this video. But imagine if you're totally new to biking, this video is perfect and may bring more people to the channel. This channel isn't just for the advanced rider but for all skill levels. Good video guys.
Exactly the position I'm in really, last time I had a bike I was 13, now I have a mountain bike with discs, this video has helped my confidence to remove the wheel to see why my rear pads are rubbing, (think the pistons need pushing back).
As a 49 year old getting back into the sport after 33 years, these types of videos are invaluable!! The sport has changed a lot in that time & a lot of the instincts & confidence I had as a kid who rode all the time and everywhere, are gone so a video with a skill tip like this is a life saver!
You guys. There are more people struggling with this then you might think or they would like to admit. Like removing and re installing the wheel with brute force (pushing the cassette through the rear mech or banging on top of the wheel to whack it in place) I think we have all seen people do these things to their bikes. Or even done them ourselves. So it makes sense to even cover the basics. GMBN does a great job (IMHO) providing content for a wide audience.
Cue all the kool kids who will make fun of this video because they're sooo rad. Meanwhile, this will probably help many a new rider who is just getting into the sport...... Good vid guys.
I thought I was one of them kool kids who knew everything. The first thing he did was put the rear cassette in the highest gear. I didn’t know to do that.
To those talking shit about this video...try working in a bike shop for a week, some people really don't have any sort of mechanical mind and need stuff like this laid out to them step by step. Why shit on a video that doesn't apply to you?
This was a good video, if it doesn't apply to you and you know how to stick on a wheel...don't watch it, it's pretty simple. Like I said, plenty people out there who need basic tutorials like this. Hints in the video title "Basic MTB Maintenance"
Could it be that many are a bit intimidated to mess with the rear wheel due to the rear mech and chain, and so this video helps them realize that it isn't that complicated while at the same time pointing out a few usefull tips? Good work GMBN! And to all of you feeling the need to point out how obvious this is; why aren't you out riding? 😜
Thanks GMBN. New to mountain biking and had my first puncture while out riding today. Used this video and the one on removing/replacing a tyre. Great stuff 👍🏻
Don't listen to any negative comments , Your videos are grate and very informative , it takes a lots of effort to have then posted each day , and really appreciated by many viewers , just may be change title to ' how to for dummy's "
i suppose all the ones complaining were born knowing this? Anyway, being relatively new to mountain biking i found it helpful. Once i removed the wheel and put it on, i also found out how easy it was. Just glad i didnt break anything in the process. I credit GMBN for that. Thanks GMBN! BTW, any pros or cons to having that clutch on or off???
best tutorial i ve ever seen , at first its a bit skeptic but if u dont have a buton and only that lever u just need to hold the lever and raise the wheel and then pull it out , like my comment so it an help others 👌
I haven’t replaced a bike tire in over 15 years since I was a kid when I was riding cruisers with coaster brakes. Some people may say this video is useless because replacing bike wheels are easy but it’s not for everyone who either has never done it or just simply can’t remember how to. I’m great at math but bad at mechanics. Thanks for the video. It was short and to the point. I watched a few other videos that were over 15 minutes in length because everything was over explained and not demonstrated properly.
New bike, a long time worrying what if what if? Thanks for being clear to the point and making all tasks simple. Replaced gear cables and made sure I was up to speed with rear wheel on and off. Fantastic, cheers!
I"ve been riding mtbs for years. Still didn't know how I get my rear wheel in and out even though after jiggling around it eventually works. This vid actually really helped :) thanks team!
I watched this video because I did not know how to take the rear tire off my bike. I am not mechanically inclined and all the gear had me confused. This is a perfect video to show me how to do it, now I will feel more confident that I'm not doing something wrong. Thank you.
This is awesome. As a noobie biker i bought a second hand Trek and the rear wheel has buckled. Now i'll be able to change it out with this help. Cheers.
Thank you so much for making this video! It has helped me massively! I just bought a new bike and had to clean my cogs, getting the wheel off was fine but I was completely baffled about how to put it back on! 4 hours of frustration and anger. Then I saw this! :)
coming from bmx, gears and all the mechanics of them freak me out. I now have a Raleigh Redux 1 with 8 speeds. I do NOT look forward to having to change tires and tubes..lol..Just scares the heck out of me..BUT this lil video helps..thanks
Thanks for this. It just helped me fit my rear wheel after removing it for the first time. I was stumped and resigned myself to humbly getting my LBS to sort it. I watched this video, and was sorted 5 minutes later.
Thanks for this video. I was nervous about changing tyres on the back wheel myself because I didn't want to mess up the gears. It's really helpful, I don't see why people feel the need to act so smug and superior!
Given how much I've gotten out of almost every other one of GMBN's videos, I'm not going to gripe about this one. Everyone's gotta learn at some point.
I tried to index the gears after I cleaned them, (following your video about it) long story short I ended up at the LBS, guy got it fixed in 3 minutes!! Gotta keep trying
I'm just here for the comments. I knew there would be some know it alls whining about a video on such a simple task. Truth is though, that their are poeple that need this.
Thanks for the help this is the first time I have changed the back wheel of a mountain bike and it seemed more complicated than it really was so Thankyou
I dropped my back wheel from the bike; that part was easy. Then I tried to get it back in, and that was murder. The washers under the axle nuts kept moving and preventing the axle from going into the dropouts. Contending with the washers and the disc brake was driving me nuts, so I ended up taking the bike off the repair stand, turning it upside-down and putting the wheel in. I now turn the bike upside-down any time I need to remove the wheel. It's so much easier.
i know what you guys think and i agree remove the rear wheel is easy why do a video, but this video hade some good tips like shifting to the highest then remove i never thought about that haha so it helped do the removing a bit more smooth so Thanks GMBN!
agree...i never used to take it to the highest hear - never had a problem but I can see the benefit. If people make silly comments about why there is a video for a simple task, others may never learn little tips that make life easier.
Thanks for this video! Although I've been been riding for many years, mountain biking since 2009, I've never tried to remove a rear wheel but I need to now to replace my tires with more "street friendly" tires. I'm still apprehensive about doing it though. Just afraid I'll screw something up and won't be able to get it back on just right.
thanks for this we are heading down to swinley forest next week and want to put the bikes in the back of the car so both wheels have to come out . . . nice and clear info thanks !!
This vid will help me in 1 week to change tyres on my specialized epic expert 2020:) and to those that give crap to this video. You probably should not be close to a bike because you dont deserve to. You should be ashamed . Kind regards a xc racer that also works as a pro bike mech.
It looks so weird that the left hub endcap just sits right up against the unpainted frame without washers or anything. The right side hub endcap sits in the hanger which looks fine. Anyway that's why I looked for a vid that shows the left side so i can compare with my bike. I took my wheel off today and just thought the left side hub endcap looked so weird up against raw metal frame material. One would think it would have something to sit in or on like the right side. Wish someone could explain why nothing is used for the left side end cap to rest on. Great vid and the only one that showed my situation. Thanks! 4:04 and again at 4:23 excellent!
Can you please show it again on mistakes putting back the rear wheel on the disc? Can position be wrong? What do you have to look out for? Or do you just slot it in?
So a spare set of wheels (to switch to for road use), I would need to buy: 1) wheels 2) rims 3) disc brake rotors/discs 180mm, 6 Bolt 4) hub 5) cassette (same as mtb?)? 6) road tyres (do i need the same size width as my chunky MTB ones - 27.5" x 2.60"?)
Thank you so much for this video i had and pretty expensive mountain bike just standing there for a few months because i couldent get to fix the back tire by not been able to taking it off !!! And yes im new to bike things and this is verey helpful
Flipping bike upside down is so BMX old school. With so many items to get damaged, including phones, its not practical to flip anymore. Do u see the pros in the TDF flip the bikes? I just find a soft bush to lean the bike on, or just hook the seat over a tree limb.
Thank you so much, this video was perfect for me, i watched a vid on the same thing by park tool but it just wasn't detailed enough for me, thank you so much
How to diagnose loosen spokes ? my rear wheel craks when i brake/accelerate hard... My cassette is tight and my hubs are ok, I thinking about my noise is from the spokes but i dont want to touch it if my problem is not from there...
My bike doesn’t seem to have an axle system. Now I will clear that up. It does have an axle. However the housing on the bike is not a hole it is as best as I can explain it 3/4 of a hole. The issue I have with this is the wheel although fitting well is not actually 100 mated to the bike. I brought the bike overseas from Australia to Thailand. And have to bike shop to put back together. Now is there something missing or is this a regular thing. Have just done my first tyre change and now I’m scared to death to take it out. Again everything seems fine and has refit well but it does not seem right.
Have $200 saved up. I can either buy some $50 shimano mx80 saints or deity compound pedals then save up $50 more for a dropper post. Or, I can buy a dropper post first and save up for pedals. Found a new gravity dropper turbo LP (125mm) for $180. What should I go for first?

can you use the hose pipe chain tensioner idea from one of your other videos on a bike with a front derailleur? would you need to put it on a little looser or readjust the derailleurs?
Just got finally a mountain bike. It come with a thru axle. My quiestion is ( the rear axle treed doest go all the way in to the treed itself in the gear side of the frame before i cant tighten up the axle? It seems that i goes in only half the way... Is it normal?

Yeah I don’t why they’re here, I guess they don’t know how to read titles of videos.
Bullsh!t. I can do most of the mtb maintaince and I still think that reinserting rear wheel is one of the hardest things to do :-)
I am one of those idiots that know crap all about bikes, so muchas gracias for the video 😃
Great video ! wish I knew about this caus i took my bike in with a car to the workshop :(
As a 49 year old getting back into the sport after 33 years, these types of videos are invaluable!! The sport has changed a lot in that time & a lot of the instincts & confidence I had as a kid who rode all the time and everywhere, are gone so a video with a skill tip like this is a life saver!

yep! just bought my first mountain bike and I couldn't figure out how to get the back tire back on!
i had to replace my tubing in my mountain bike so this video actually helped a lot
I thought I was one of them kool kids who knew everything. The first thing he did was put the rear cassette in the highest gear. I didn’t know to do that.
Helped me fix my own bike without ruining anything. Thanks
I already know how to remove my rear wheel however I still found this vid to be quite good. I learned some new tips. You guys are awesome
Never changed a bike wheel. This was very helpful as I was worried I would wreck something. 120K views I musn't be the only one! Thanks
To those talking shit about this video...try working in a bike shop for a week, some people really don't have any sort of mechanical mind and need stuff like this laid out to them step by step. Why shit on a video that doesn't apply to you?

Could it be that many are a bit intimidated to mess with the rear wheel due to the rear mech and chain, and so this video helps them realize that it isn't that complicated while at the same time pointing out a few usefull tips? Good work GMBN! And to all of you feeling the need to point out how obvious this is; why aren't you out riding? 😜
One minute of this video was all I needed to get my tire off and back on! Thank you very much!!! Be blessed!
Point being lads, if you can do it already don't watch it then complain about it, even if you do watch it it will do no harm
Thanks GMBN. New to mountain biking and had my first puncture while out riding today. Used this video and the one on removing/replacing a tyre. Great stuff 👍🏻

Great work Elizabeth!

New to bikes. I didn’t even know what a clutch mech was. Seems I have one which helped me a lot to take my wheel off. Thanks.
This is a very helpful turtorial and you can use what he is saying and adapt it to fixing older bikes with rim breaks est.
I really appreciate this video it helped me a lot and saved money from going to the local shop frequently
Thanks for the GREAT vid! Made changing a flat super easy for the back tire! I will make this channel my main drop in for bike tips!
i know what you guys think and i agree remove the rear wheel is easy why do a video, but this video hade some good tips like shifting to the highest then remove i never thought about that haha so it helped do the removing a bit more smooth so Thanks GMBN!

SOLID, SIMPLE, TO THE POINT! Thank you
What happened to the "8 tips for installing internally routed cables" video, was looking forward to that 😤
lol they got more advanced things like this video
Coming soon still, don't worry!
Thank you very much this helped me a lot I don't have anyone to teach me so this video is pretty much all I have to fix my bike
Newbie here! Thanks!
Great video, just getting into MTB and this video is exactly what I needed
Thanks for this video! I'm still apprehensive about doing it though. Just afraid I'll screw something up and won't be able to get it back on just right.
And all the pros spoke... Do you know there are beginners out there and you also were a beginner one day? Great video, as usual. Thanks. A beginner.
thanks for this we are heading down to swinley forest next week and want to put the bikes in the back of the car so both wheels have to come out . . . nice and clear info thanks !!

This was the most helpful one yet. Love it.
Thanks for the vid - these basics are very useful for getting back into the game after 12 years :)

Thank you so much my friend. Got my new tyre om easy thanx to this and a bit of intuition. 🦀
Can you please show it again on mistakes putting back the rear wheel on the disc? Can position be wrong? What do you have to look out for? Or do you just slot it in?
@GMBN: Good vid guys.
Ignore the useless negative comments from immature youtubers.
So a spare set of wheels (to switch to for road use), I would need to buy:
1) wheels
2) rims
3) disc brake rotors/discs 180mm, 6 Bolt
4) hub
5) cassette (same as mtb?)?
6) road tyres (do i need the same size width as my chunky MTB ones - 27.5" x 2.60"?)
Thanks, I'm new to repairing my mtb so this was a big help
This is helpful for those of us who have only ever worked on single speed bikes.
thank you brother for this tutorial feom philippines mabuhay!
great video pal. Good for a complete novice like me. Thanks
excellent demonstration.
Thank you so much for this video i had and pretty expensive mountain bike just standing there for a few months because i couldent get to fix the back tire by not been able to taking it off !!! And yes im new to bike things and this is verey helpful
Cheers For this. Might sound simple but it always seems to be a ball ache with my zesty.
Great help, have struggled in the past!
Very good explanation. Thanks
Good video, i hate doing this next to the road or on the trail where i cant hang my bike on the ceiling.
Flipping bike upside down is so BMX old school. With so many items to get damaged, including phones, its not practical to flip anymore. Do u see the pros in the TDF flip the bikes? I just find a soft bush to lean the bike on, or just hook the seat over a tree limb.
I had no idea it was that easy! Thanks!
Very simple but this gave me the piece of mind to know that I can do it myself. Thanks!
Ty man finally i Remove the little stone that got stuck
Thank you so much, this video was perfect for me, i watched a vid on the same thing by park tool but it just wasn't detailed enough for me, thank you so much
Great tutorial..thanks buddy 😎
How to diagnose loosen spokes ? my rear wheel craks when i brake/accelerate hard... My cassette is tight and my hubs are ok, I thinking about my noise is from the spokes but i dont want to touch it if my problem is not from there...
+Andrew Zegel No it is clearly from the rear, its not my BB since if i brake hard without pedaling it also happends...
Damn i hope i wont have to :o Thats a no-name one so its not expensive at all but anyway... thank you for help
Well I liked it,I have just changed my pads by watching this video and I didn't have to take it to the shop or ask hubby.
Thanks for the tutorial, just wondering why some bikes have gone away from quick release wheels especially on the rear?
Thru-axle wheels have just been proved to be more reliably safe and add a bit of torsional strength and stiffness to the bike which is nice!
Please make a video how to remove the front wheel. I can't do it don't know why.
Shhh they might actually listen
seriously?
The front wheel literally has no drive train just unscrew the front axle or untighten the quick release lever and then it comes off it's that simple
if you have v brakes, completely deflate the tire first
This newly converted road biker is loving these videos.
can you have a video on how to land in a manual off a jump please.
love your videos
Thanks so much, very useful! Really simple to follow.
Great video Neil! I'm sure there are a ton of noobies that will find this video useful. 👍🏼
A huge help mate. Thanks
+Jordan Keeler and should i buy the gravity dropper or another dropper post? I need 125mm or more travel for under $200.
Just what I needed! 😊 Thanks..
This video really helped thank you so much
Hey guys, I love your channel! Are you guys going to be having any giveaways? Like bikes/parts...
Thanks! will try it
gmbn please can you go to Phillips park in prestwich please reply i would like to see how it's done I go there all the time, if there's any chance could u film on a hardtail thank you😀
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
It’s funny how people are talking about all these riders who will comment bad things about this video EVEN THOUGH NO ONE HAS
yeet
Yh lol
I've seen multiple sarcastic comments like "what's next a video on how to adjust the handlebar height?" etc
Hey this helped btw thx ( and I don't see any negative comments )
That's great! Good to know 👍
Since it seems like the video ideas might be running thin, these guys should come to America and do an epic ride in Utah, or explore the world of bikepacking.
thanks you lot are awesome you know how to 1 very clarly explain stuff and also how to ride and fix a bike . would justlike to ask what is a good cheap bike to do all whinlatter routs. thnks great vid . keep em coming.
that moment when you don't know about the clutch on your shimano derailleur and wonder why it is so extremely hard to bend it forwards...
How about transport? With the chain swinging around, would it be a bad idea to put my bike in my car? Cause it doesn't fit with only the front wheel removed.
Whos moaning,....found this really useful being new to the game. Great content guys keep it up 🙌🏿👊🏿🙏🏿
my disc break isnt running freely Alter replace the rear wheel. This happens very often. then I have to set my caliper. Do you have some tips Tour avoid this?
This is Very Helpful
Thank you. 😊
can you use the hose pipe chain tensioner idea from one of your other videos on a bike with a front derailleur? would you need to put it on a little looser or readjust the derailleurs?
Hey Neil. I've wanted to get a GT Sensor Comp for a while. Do you enjoy riding yours? They seem like a blast to ride
I know yours isn't the comp but same difference to me
It was really helpful thank u very much ❤️
Just got finally a mountain bike. It come with a thru axle. My quiestion is ( the rear axle treed doest go all the way in to the treed itself in the gear side of the frame before i cant tighten up the axle? It seems that i goes in only half the way... Is it normal?
very comprehensive video
