    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  5 лет назад +3

      Yep. It's not cheap. It wasn't $500 at the time this video was shot. It was less than that. It is expensive though but amazing quality. Small quantities are made at a time and hand assembled. These are only sold in batches, a couple of times a year. This isn't a big company. That's why the cost is high. They are expensive to make. They are not action figure made on the thousands that end up in discount stores. I think they might all be pre-ordered before they actually start to make the next batch!

    to work after.
    However, I have considered purchasing an SFBT Doll.
    Is just a little doubt how good it is to use,
    since I mainly work in ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 года назад

      Why would it matter which application you use? I sometimes sit with the figure/doll in front of me while I draw and at other times I take photos of it in the pose and have them on my screen while I draw. I use different applications and I don't think it matters. In Illustrator it would be more useful that the other dolls because it has more reference for the joints and muscle structure and I'd say that's great for building up your quick construction guide layer.

  • @mhal-bj8uq
    @mhal-bj8uq 4 года назад +1

    Personally, I'd prefer the 1000toys synthetic human figurine. Not only is it more human looking and less terrifying, but it's also four times cheaper than this. The only thing this figure has that the other doesn't is articulated fingers. As of now, 1000toys doesn't have a female figure for purchase, but they've been working on prototypes that I think will be available to the public early next year.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, I thought about reviewing that but I was really disappointed when I saw that the hands weren't articulated. It's more like an action figure than an artist ref' figure. There are some really good action figures out there. Some female ones too. If you are drawing group scenes then it's a good way to go!

    Obviously, this Is the best artist's reference doll.
    But that this price point why not use the Android/PC virtual pose apps for an even more flexible option at a much better price point.
    For example, virtual ones can morph shapes and add hair.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 года назад

      Personal preference. I just don't like virtual reference figures. I've talked to a lot of artists and there seems to be a high number of us who really don't like using them. I'd rather have the physical object in front of me so I can interact with it. Experiment, play with lighting etc and all in the real world. I don't need clothes, hair and all that on the model. It's only there so I can get the bones of my figure right. Anatomy and composition are the fundamentals that need to be perfected when you're using a reference figure so those extras that the virtual ones add are of no real use. I can imagine the clothes and hair. Especially thanks to life study drawings etc that I enjoy doing. Along with so great Google image ref' too.

    Are you familiar with the 18" superposeable Spiderman figure. It has 69 points of articulation and make great reference models.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  6 лет назад

      I've seen it. If I used that though I'd have to sand it lightly and spray it whight so it wasn't too distracting. That's why I'm not too keen on action figures. - only reason!

    • @gl7011
      @gl7011 6 лет назад

      Lawrence Mann
      That's exactly what I do to the figures. I have 6 of the Spiderman figures. I got the idea of using them as reference models from Jeff Watts of Watts Atelier. He's a fine artist as well. I just built upon that idea. He painted the one he had a mat gray. I buy all types and sizes of toys for various projects and to experiment with different scale.

    You seem to be having just a little too much fun with that doll, haha! Seriously though, Hooray! You finally found one! It really seems to be very complex, even more than I could tell from the websites. The posable eyes and fingers are so neat! I love that it stands on its own. It is definitely one of the best out there. Are you still going to get a Stickybones too?

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  8 лет назад

      It's a great reference figure and Dolkus have done an amazing job. It's a shame these aren't more widely available. You can get yours via their website though. You should certainly check them out. I've found it to be a great addition to the studio. It's the best one I've seen so far.
      I do want to check out the StickyBones figure too. I contacted them early on but it was still in pre production and they didn't have any to spare. I found out that that they were handing them out to other artists though so I felt a bit upset by that so I might give it a miss. They are marketing it as an animation doll rather than reference for artists and it's not as detailed anatomically as this figure so... never mind!

    • @eleanortaylor4389
      @eleanortaylor4389 8 лет назад

      +LAWRENCEcanDRAW Wow! It is expensive! $320! However, I shouldn't be surprised because it is so complex and finely made. It definitely is a big investment! I think I will stick to my Poser 10 program for now. Although the dragons and cat dolls that Dolkus makes are super cute, but they are expensive too! Maybe someday when I get really rich, haha! Really these dolls are works of art in themselves.

      Ask yourself these questions when buying anything: Will this make me a better artist? Will it last me longer than the equivalent in takeaway food? (i.e. Pizza🍕) . Am I willing to give up that amount of food to get what I need to make myself a better artist? Is that unfair? Maybe a little but if you get in better shape and get better at drawing then you know you're onto a winner. I agree that it is expensive and you can just use photo reference or ask someone to pose but if you are doing comic art then this is 2nd to none for getting the perfect pose extremely fast panel by panel.

    If not just get amazing yamaguchi figures (most preferably the Spider-Man figure) they are expensive but the older ones with just as much as articulation as the newer ones, the least expensive is Spider-Man and Deadpool but they do have bulky figures like venom that surprisingly have a lot of articulation.
    Although the amazing yamaguchi figures aren't necessarily for references they are really good for posing and referencing tbh. So go pick those up , or you can just get a marvel legends figure

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  5 лет назад

      I do like the yamaguchi figures but I don't like using action figures as reference figures - You're not the first to make a similar argument. The characters are a distraction and most of the time they are just not anatomically correct. Also the size can be small when compared to real reference figures. With a couple of them this can work but in most cases you might as well just draw from imagination or find a better reference figure. With some brands of figures the characters can be too Manga for my own art but for some artists this might actually be of value. For those folks I might actually suggest this as a good alternative.

      YES! ☺️ You read my mind! I bought a Spiderman years ago, only for the articulation. Not so much for art though. Actually, I find it weirdly therapeutic posing & moving them around, like a fidget toy. I used to do that with my brothers' G.I. Joe's 😄 Then, my nephew got a Spiderman for his birthday that was even better. Mine has moving hands, but his had moving finger joints! His eventually got all floppy from being played with so much (hey, he had lotsa fun & that's what his Spiderman was for😊). I moved semi recently & have been looking for my Spiderman. I used to sit him on the edge of my hanging spider plant. Not being able to find him is what got me looking up these dolls & why I'm here in the first place. 😆 hehe! That's so funny.
      I even Googled "most articulated toys & action figures"!😁
      I should probably get another one.

    I think we can all agree that its amazing and horrifying at the same time.
    But I think for an artist like myself its somewhat useless, because I like to have lots of poses left to my mind, or at the very least force myself to search anatomy references in images and the like each time a reference doll like body kun cant make the exact pose I want.
    In short I guess what Im saying is that I think a doll like this would make me too dependant on it. And for the price it would be like, a tremendous waste.

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 года назад +1

      I know exactly what your saying because I'm the same with the image reference but where this would really help you out is the lighting. That and making fine adjustments along the way to rotating the hands etc. Body Kun and some others just can't do that either. Lighting is so important and people don't seem to consider that when thinking about the pose. Even if you find a great reference pose - the lighting won't be the lighting you want.

    • @bluewolf7111
      @bluewolf7111 4 года назад

      @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW I agree that the figure is hella useful, I just think in relation to the price, at least for someone like me, it wouldnt be worth it.
      The thing with body kun is that while it doesnt help you with everything with perfect precision, it has a really big array of poses that help, specially begginers or people who have been drawing only for some time. The price for it is not what I consider cheap, but its accesible, 120$ for the male and female originals and about 60$ (both m & f) for cheap ones that can do most of the same job, just might break sooner.
      But this figure on the other hand, goes nuts with the price, its reasonable by its quality but not reasonable from a consumer perspective, and it allows you to do more with more precision but at the end of the day its all reference that can be learned somewhere else.
      Its like really cool, but I dont see myself ever getting one, even if I could afford it. Thanks for the review of it, I think many people skip on these because they think like me, but its important to see how useful it is to properly decide wether we need them or not!

    • @LAWRENCEcanDRAW
      @LAWRENCEcanDRAW  4 года назад +1

      I agree about cost being a major factor. Obviously I am speaking from a pro point of view. It pays for itself when it saves you time but other than that don't worry about it. It's something you need now or you don't. That's why it's great to see lots of various versions at different price points and why we need reviews.
      Some people have mentioned using action figures on a budget and I really like the idea of that. They are sooo much more articulated now then when I started out. I just wouldn't want the distraction of the colours and detail. Maybe a simple one painted white. I might do a video on that.

If you use the figure on a regular basis then it will pay for itself over time - if not then you can go for a cheaper figure but of course you're sacrificing detail and quality. I'm hoping to do a few more videos with some more suggestions so stay tuned for those. The male Body Kun looks like a normal man; the female Body Chan is an insult to women and to anatomy. So if you REALLY want to use these as art models, get the Figma Female & the Body Kin male. @@LAWRENCEcanDRAW This is SUCH a problem! I find these figures way too small too. Believe it or not, I have better luck with 12" fashion dolls. Some of them are very well articulated and you can put clothing on them. They're cheap and readily available and can be posed pretty well with a stand. You may need to stick a little putty into the joint to make it hold the pose, but that's not so bad. And if I want to customize them with Apoxy Sculpt or paint, I haven't ruined an expensive doll.
