I am a huge Fallout fan and it started with Fallout 3. I was just in awe of that game, but I think part of that is just that it was one of the first open world games I'd played. It's still in my all time top 10 though.

It is very flawed, but it's also where I started, so I do have fond memories of playing it. NV is still my favorite Fallout game, especially the DLCS. There were things I liked about 4, especially since it took place in Massachusetts (where I grew up), but I didn't like the constant settlement rescuing, the ending felt like a retread of the ending of F3 so the suspense and fun fell flat, and neither siding with the Brotherhood or Institute felt satisfying. The Brotherhood in particular seemed especially stupid. The group that's been hoarding technology since their inception, and they want to completely destroy the Institute rather than take it over and use the technology for their own ends?! It's bizarre.

As someone who's first Fallout was Fallout 3 back in the day like everyone else, this game has aged miserably, in every single way. Literally any other mainline Fallout game, arguably even FO4 simply because it's more modern, is better. There are really easy and streamlined ways to play FO1, 2 and New Vegas these days, and those games have endured the test of time through good core gameplay loop and story/writing depth.

    Pretty good video, Grey!
I like the blend of a "Number List of Things about Franchise/Entry" combined with that dip into the lore and development aspect to it. Harken's me back to the days of channels who would do this kinda thing, talk about different aspects, do build/building videos, etc...Shaddy Cast and TheNthApple come to mind, gone, but remembered. I do like the style, and cant wait to see more.
I personally still dislike Bethesda's ever-decreasing standard of lore, and the plot holes it creates; but Im in it for the worldbuilding, so ofcourse thats my gripe! LOL

I got a 360 back in 2006. My first Bethesda game was Oblivion and I was blown away. On the heels of that, when FO3 came out I was excited to try it out... a game with many of the same gameplay mechanics as Oblivion but set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. I loved it! When I exited the vault, one of the first places I came across was Megaton, and there were so many different people to meet and quests to do there. Then there was the introduction to the karma system, and I had a blast playing multiple times switching between good and evil characters.

Another thing that sucks about Fallout 3 is that the 4 roaming traders can be killed. You just need to be near them to have them loaded in the environment. I have come across one of them dead on so many of my early playthroughs, because they fought a deathclaw or giant scorpion. I started reverse pickpocketing them all my extra power armor suits, and plasma weapons. If you get at max picking range, and pop a stealthboy, it might work. A bit of save/reloading is worth it to save my traders :)

I started with NV on PS3. Then 3, next. I immediately liked 3 more. NV crashed more than a drunk baby driving a truck. So just playing a stable game was night and day better.
I was, however, totally bored by the story. I finished the game just to get it over with. No Aim Down Sights made combat lackluster. And the mind numbing subways.
But after NV, the map was more interesting. It felt more alive, more randomness. More interesting locations to explore. NV felt linear. You go to Primm, and down and around. Unless you’re a pro going to rob the casinos at level 1, LCK 10. Walking out of 3, I felt i could go anywhere.
Of course, Fo4’s world and gameplay is on a whole other level. It’s Survival Mode is far better. I like it’s RPG being centered on the companions. And it’s more fun for me that i can roleplay , and not worry that being a dick will scuttle quests. RPG-lite is more fun. I never really bought into the skill checks system. There’s no real chance to fail, once you level x, y or z stat.

I found it difficult to follow some of the quest lines, and because I did not really know how to read the campus marker it made some more of the quests very difficult. I can agree that a Noob Fallout 3 is difficult, however, it does lay a good foundation for playing New Vegas and Fallout 4. Ant the Raiders in Power Armor, oops I mean the Brotherhood of Steel, is the last faction I would support on Fallout 4. Before the release of Nuka World and Far Harbor, I completed the game using all 4 factions. (this was before I discovered Mods.) The real sadness is that you cannot save the Institute using any of the factions other than the Institute.

I came to the world of video games from the world of movies, so the sights and sounds of a video game are often just as important to me as the story and mechanics. There is still no better shot in any Fallout game than when you first open Vault 101 and see the blinding light and the decrepit Washington Monument in the background. I love seeing the decaying ruins of the famous real-world locations of Washington DC. I like that everything was an ugly gray/green color. I like that it really is a wasteland, with big stretches of nothing. All of those details set the mood for this particular post-apocalyptic wasteland. I love Three Dog and the music of Fallout 3.

Fallout 3 was a product of its time. When I played it in 2022, I loathed it and questioned everything in this game.
WHY WOULD THEY ADD BULLET DROP?

Fallout 3 is actually my second favorite game in the series. I dont want a devolped wasteland with lots to do. I want a empty hopeless world where you can do your best and fail. I want a game where despite you helping your people your rejected by them. I want a game where there isnt a happy ending. I want a game where while the comedy is there its subdued. I want a game like fallout 1 and I feel for the most part fallout 3 is the best successor to fallout 1 . fo2 leans way to hard into a lively world where the tone is nonsensical and full of annoying popculture references. I hate this. I hate that every other game after it does it. I enjoy that while fallout 3 does have references and trys to be funny at time its not the main focus. the focus is the lost burnt world. I adore that.

Fallout 3 makes me feel like I have much more freedom to explore than fallout new vegas with it’s suffocating walls and lackluster locations that melt together into obscurity.

Fallout 3s world makes no sense you aren't a fallout fan so I can understand why you like that trash

For the old fans, Fallout 3 was horrible because it wasn't anything like Fallout 2. We kinda had the same reaction that everybody had with Fallout 76, just a decade earlier.

The main storyline hooks you? Since when? The storyline is freaking awful, from start to finish.

Fallout 2 is by far the worst for noobs. Making a good build is complicated. The whole game is complicated. The Temple of Plotholes (Temple of Trials) is hard. The UI is only slightly better than in Fallout 1.

You will need to mod the game to play on modern pc.

It's supposed to be played on Win XP, so it's not an issue with the age of the computer itself. The fucking thing will crash approx. a hundred times per play through on later Win versions.

depends on the system. even on windows vista when I played the games for windows version it was pretty crashy. on windows 7 I had to go to nexus and install the unofficial patch just to make it stable enough to play. on windows 10 I had to disable autosave on travel to get rid of a persistent crash there, but in the process of recording this video, I made it an entire playthrough on a brand new windows 11 rig without a single mod, or workaround to keep it stable. some hardware just seems to handle it better than others.

Okay these are 5 reasons you don't like it, and they're all valid but why are they specifically bad for noobs?
FO3 is the best entry point because NV and FO4 build upon it and work on the problems you've identified in the video

FO3 was my first fallout game and I hated it at first. After revisiting it a decade later as an adult, I love it. I was too young to understand the mechanics. Great game!
