Had a yellow-glowing Blizzarioths para relic in 4U that had an Edgemaster 4 set. The full kit was basically that, a 4 edgemaster OOO, 4 pieces Chameleos, and the GDI Waist. Yellow swords, ugly ass yellow straw skirt, and fully tintable armor - you bet your ass I was the Bringer Of Potassium in that kit! I could have gotten some better skills with different gear, but who can pass up being a Banana of Power? You know exactly how it is!

The thing I always say is pick whatever you want and are comfortable with, as long as you have the skill to back it up. Someone can have a super low armour rating and do really well or have the highest armour you can possibly get and then get destroyed.

My playstyle is to do SA, with the best armor I have for the monster. If I'm against Kirin or Astalos, for example, I'll be doing the hunt in full Khezu gear with Aerial and the Arctic Ledge SA. For most Elder Dragons, like the Magalas, Amatsu, or Nakarkos, I'll be in full Storge, running Striker Mundus Regius, gemmed into Sharpness +2.
I have 650+ hours into the game, and I honestly don't care about any kind of meta... I just go in the best gear I have, and do my best.

Well well! Just last night I made a room for hellblade V since I ran out of tickets and it got filled in less than a minute. a "pro" hunter joined and 2 hr 7s - the first one had a full los S set and the other had a hellblade set but soul skill isn't activated yet. "pro" hunter immediately says kick the other dude coz he'll just be in the way bla bla bla but since it's a pain in the ass to type I just kicked "pro" hunter and went on with the 2 hr 7s. both of them were pretty good. Moral? Kick the dude who complains first and of course just go on with the hunt and have fun no need to be an ass.

Nice lol I don't play online too much in Gen but I experienced a lot of that type of hunter in 4U, where they deemed someone unworthy as soon as they came in, because of their gear and would start calling for a kick. Hey man That's the best thing about Monster hunter and it's meta, It's always improving and the boundries are always being broken. Like you said in the video we all thought Aerial and Adept were going to be broken and that Striker would have been too much of a cost for an extra hunter art...Now look where we are, Guild and Striker are literally the meta. I remember when everyone though Balanced Bug was the best, then we learn how op Crit boost was and that IG had the option to have a free 30% affinity boost through speed 1.
We're all trying to improve in one way or another and I think that what makes this game and it's community so great. After practicing so hard the past weeks my times have drop from 15-13 min on average to 9-sub 5 times and I couldn't be happier, and tbh I owe it to people like you who inspire me to get better. So on be half of the people who don't say it enough Thank you for doing what you love Herny. lol

  • @TeamDarkside
    @TeamDarkside 7 лет назад +199

Great video, though I would like to add something from a perspective I havent seen you mention in this video.
Following the meta might not be the only way to play for some people and I respect that. However, I can only speak for myself. After thousands of hours I've spent playing Monster Hunter (not talking about the 3DS games) I've tried so much, so many different tactics, so much stuff, so many different mixed armors with different skill combinations and it really is fun to try out different things and make your experiences with them and that's one thing you mentioned in this video. But at some point all of that doesn't satisfy you anymore.
You won't find joy in a hunt which takes longer than it could have and all that's left to play for is optimization. You learn how the game really works. You gather every information you can get and try to implement it in your gameplay. You want to optimize every last bit by developing a game style which also includes trying to find the best dps sets possible. And going for TA is one of the best ways to optimize. You will reach the point where you ask yourself why would you take a set even if it may be a lot of fun to play, when there is another set which is simply better because you've calculated before and you've experienced that hunts go down a lot faster and smoother with these sets.
What I'm trying to say is people who suggest only the meta sets might actually have spent a little more time than usual playing this game or it's just their way of playing Monster Hunter, to optimize everything they can. Those people sometimes have to remind themselves that someone else might have played Monster Hunter for only a couple hundred hours and that some people, most of all people who are new to the series need to make their experiences. They need to find out about their own way to play and maybe at some point they seek for MH perfectionism as much as I do.
It actually is sad if you think about it. You always have to get the best results or you won't be satisfied. I wish everyone that he may never reach that state in Monster Hunter. Have fun trying out all sorts of different sets and playstyles until the GS masterrace reaches you all. My best memories from Monster Hunter still come from MH3 when I was a noob and had to go a long way, lol. The most fun about this game is to learn how to become better. What fun is left after improving for thousands of hours? As mentioned before, nice video, interesting topic to talk about!

    • @Hernyy
      @Hernyy  7 лет назад +29

Team Darkside thanks for the insight :) yea I did this vid, the talking part at least, in one take at night so I missed a lot of points but I definitely agree with you. It might seem hypocritical of me to tell people to have fun with their sets, and then right after go and speedrun with a meta set, but I share the same sentiment you do. I do want people to get to that point where they play fully optimized, but I also want them to be able to experiment different things too and have some fun in their own way.
In 4U I didn't really play optimally until the last few months when I started speedrunning, but in the beginning I didn't really play well or armor up efficiently, & when I played solo I would just spam mount with IG lol. In Tri I would wear the Helios set against everything and I played a lot of Lance and would spam the charge (ironic now, since the charge is actually powerful lol) and I had so much fun. So I definitely didn't always play optimal but eventually I got motivated to improve. I played FU alone, but in any MH I played online I don't remember anyone disrespecting me or harassing me for the way I was playing and because of that I'll always have fond memories of the old times in this game. I'd like for new players to also have the same MH "upbringing" as me so to speak and have fun trying out new things without getting harassed and stuff, and once they're ready to 'git gud', THEN they can research the optimal skills/sets/playstyles and get to it. I know I'm being idealistic since the community is growing and not everyone will be patient or understanding but I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Thanks again for the input. This was my first discussion type video and I did it pretty poorly and disorganized, but in the future I'll try to collect all my ideas first and maybe write down some kind of script to be more prepared for the next one. Also my gf says hi, we are both fans 😬

      Team Darkside
Honestly reading through your response I felt the most solemn reciprocation for your perspective. Many thousands of hours have I pumped into this series, and I started out doing what I pleased, playing countless different ways and finding out what I liked, then after a while I got to a point where all I wanted was maximum power output. I chased that satisfaction for a while, until I found and practised the best methods for speed running etc just as many others have.
Though unfortunately for me it's gone a step further, as I'm guessing it might for you as well. For me it's gotten to a point where not even the fastest speed runs I can do even remotely satisfy me. Then there are times wherein I try to go back to the roots, play the old fashioned way with oldschool sets that aren't composed of the meta idealism of the standard crit boost set for example, but seldom does that satisfy me.
I'm not even sure what to do at this point, I feel like I've seen and done everything, mastered the formula, but the formula has just run completely dry.

In other words " I am a meta player" its ok if you do it like you explained, but I am afraid that most of the players dont do it that way, they read the information they need on the internet and skips all the "I want to experience the game" and jumps in directly to the meta, does are the people who kicks people for not having meta gear, its like being in one of does WoW elitists guilds that only plays with the "best" and cant see other players are actually carrying them and believes they are the MVP.

to be perfectly honest, even since since much LESS newcomer-friendly releases like MHFU i always thought thats what the whole game is about: killing every monster in every way possible and getting every item. the most fun ive ever had was styling on a rajang with a blunt-set aerial huntinghorn. i realy love (and at this point urge fellow veterans to do the same) to just join low lvl lobbies online, help people out and give them some advice on how to kill stuff most efficiently. imo armor-skills are far from the most important aspect to that and having unorthodox sets can be surprisingly efficient besides being extremely enjoyable.
HOWEVER if i go full out tryhard and farm DK rathalos, HB Glavenus or multi-hyper-quests i expect EVERYONE to do the same. id never use said aerial blunt HH-set in a DK 10 quest (this guy gives me cancer anyways) and if i have some troll with random ass skills joining my quest just to leech off? ill kick him if he doesnt put on a proper set

HuntersheepKaridas yes I agree, that's a point I had written down but forgot to say in the vid but yea if you are going for tougher stuff online and are going to be playing super serious with your best armor, weapon, etc, then I see nothing wrong with expecting teammates to do the same.

Part of the enjoyment of Monster Hunter for me personally, is making mixed sets. I like to put together mixed sets with as many cohesive skills as possible for different styles of play. Nothing annoys me more than those people who only care about DPS, they're missing out on so much!
You could have sets for getting better quest rewards, speeding up animations, using bombs, general support or even making consumables give more effects/stamina/health.
There are so many ways of playing Monster Hunter, and it's what makes it a great game!

I agree on most if not all your points I think having a Meta is quite good since it gives everyone a goal but forcing people to use the best skills/styles should not be a thing, I personally only kick someone if they don't have any skills at all and only if I'm hunting strong monsters like hyper rajang/deviljho

    • @Hernyy
      @Hernyy  7 лет назад +8

Mattheo Saidi oh yes I had that point in my notes but didn't say it for some reason but yes I agree, depending on what you're hunting you can use your judgement online as to whether or not someone will be efficient when taking on a tougher hunt. I don't like kicking people but I sometimes had to make that call in 4U when people would join my 140 Double Rajang GQ in like full Zamtrios gear, with a fire weapon.

    • @ghosthero0806
      @ghosthero0806 7 лет назад +3

So far the only time I've had to kick someone in generations was when i was hunting a hyper ratholos with someone that was wearing full gore magala armor. not even gore S.
and even then i didn't kick them until they proved that they couldn't handle it and triple carted on me before we could even break anything.
in my experience with mh4u, skills were much more important than they seem to be currently because hunting styles have almost eliminated the need for certain skills so long as you're in the right style. and yeah someone can still be running mounting master on their aerial set but it's almost redundant when you realize how many mounts you get without it. same with evasion skills and adept style, as long as you've got decent timing you can evade through anything.

  • @RarestDragon
    @RarestDragon 7 лет назад +19

From what I can tell, Meta is kind of a loose, vague term in Monster Hunter. Even if there are some Meta strategies, it really isn't a huge deal if someone isn't wearing the most optimal set. MH gives players so may ways to be effective, but it also allows players to improvise. It's not the end of the world if someone doesn't have an optimal skill/armor set.
An example would be when I was hunting Alatreon in MHTri. My group decided to sleep bomb the head for skypiercers, I even came prepared with the Bomb Boost skill. Three of us had BB L+s and matts to make more. Our fourth guy didn't. I suggested that he use a hammer to smack the head with and bring whatever bombs he could. Our lance guy got annoyed with him and insulted him for his unpreparedness. With the bombs and the hammer hits we got plenty of KOs and not five minutes in both horns were broken. But those two were arguing during the fight and they each died once, nearly causing us to fail. I got fed up and told everybody not to bring bombs on the next run. I went hammer with the fourth guy and showed everybody that sleep bombing isn't even needed to break the horns.
Creating sets around teamwork is great too. When I was helping a friend get the HR Shagaru set he had horrible luck with getting a phosgem. For HR shagaru, a phosgem could be gotten by carving the tail, breaking the feelers and/or picking up a shiny. He went in with an Insect Glaive and Mounting Master skill, while I went in with a Greatsword and Partbreaker skill. Every time Shagaru is mounted it drops a shiny and the more it stays down the easier time I have in cutting the tail and breaking the feelers. We didn't want to speedrun it, we wanted maximum chances for that phosgem and that meant leaving shagaru alive long enough to make that possible. The pattern would be attack > he mounts shagaru while I sharpen my weapon > shagaru falls, my friend goes for shiny while I go for tail first. If tail is off, go for the head > rinse and repeat until both are broken > then I jump of ledges to perform jumping attacks for more mounts which means more shiny drops. We became so efficient at duoing shagaru that we could predict how many attacks it took to mount and break parts. It made finally getting that phosgem far more satisfying.
People love to talk about Meta strategies for a lot of games but Monster Hunter is a game where there really isn't a Meta to speak of. Sure, there are ways to be more effective with certain weapons and monsters but none of it is a requirement; and in some cases it's not even ideal. If mid/maxing is something that appeals to someone then that's fine. However, it's not the only way to play and nobody should have something like that shoved down their throat when all they want to do is fight an awesome boss. It really does boil down to personal play.
Personally, I find more enjoyment out of being vulnerable in Monster Hunter than I do if I feel overpowered/over-prepared. Fighting a monster with a weapon/style that I wouldn't normally use for that monster makes me feel like I'm a better hunter overall because I understand the weapon better and I try to figure out the best way to use it against that monster.

I think it's very important for the community to acknowledge that the game is designed in such away that allows complete personalisation in almost every conceivable way, especially in G rank, if you can think of it, you can build it.
You can meld a set around however the fuck you personally enjoy playing, and let's not forget, you can be an incredibly good player while using your own designs, you don't need a meta build to be a great player. Power takes on many forms, and "max dps" is only one of them.

Started in 3U, ran endgame with Golden Lune (Destroyer, Divine Blessing, Great Luck... _horrible_ offensive set) gemmed in to add Bombardier and Evasion +1, with Brachy SA. Looking back, I probably raised some red flags, but not ONCE was I mocked for my choices, _or_ kicked. Met a bunch of friendly people and killed monsters fast. Made a honed blade mixed set. Didn't like it, and stuck with my Lune, lol.
Then 4U dropped and MH gained in popularity. Suddenly there were too many fresh hunters to deal with, and people stopped being nice. Didn't help that 4U's endgame was a huge leap in difficulty compared to 3U... and imo the community suffered for it.
Fast forward to MHGen, and engame is laughably easy again. I can casually solo online quests again, woo-hoo! So I think maybe the community has cooled off, relaxed a bit, and gotten back into the focus of fun...

I think the most important part is to have fun. Of course one should have a decent set online, in order not to let others down, but I love the wide range of awesome armours and like using sets that are not top-tier just as much as top-tier sets. I'm mainly a solo player anyway, so unless I'm farming a really annoying or strong monster that gives me problems, I run whatever I want and use almost every weapon as I see fit. Also, I want to git gud regardless of skills and sometimes my inner girl peeks out and wants me to look good^^. If someone joins without wearing a crit boost set, that doesn't mean he/she sucks as a hunter. That person might just love wearing a specific full set because that's his favourite monster. I remember doing several runs with full Gogmazios and a Dalamadur GL just because that combination looked absolutely wicked. But that was mostly against Zamtrios and other rather harmless monsters, for the Event permarage Crimson Fatty I used better sets to make sure I wasn't a burden.

I think the main thing this springs from is that its common for say, an aerial GS user pops in the room to go around tripping people and carting a lot. That's gonna tend to make people think, "Wow all aerial users are like this" subconsciously. I've had this happen on many many occasions where the guy with full hellblade and aerial ukanlos gs just triple carts the quest, and you just end up saying "welp." But hey, if you don't cart often and can control your tripping, go for it.

For me, whether or not a set is "good" basically comes down to two criteria:
-Can I complete a quest in a decent amount of time with it?
    -Is it fun to use?
If I can kill a monster in 30 secs, but I'm not really enjoying my time playing, then I'm going to try a different loadout. If a set is a blast to use but it takes me half an hour to beat a quest, then I'm going to switch to something different.
    It's about finding a balance

I only got 1 HR set right now and thats the Rathalos set with speed sharpening, Attack Up L and Weakness Exploit, and honestly with this set I feel it works well to mess with most weapons and trying the Red Rook (Rathalos Gunlance) and its so fun to just watch everything explode despite me learning it. The defenses and offensive stats/abilities help me out to learn and still continue doing new quests. I still love my Serigios Switch Axe though with Aerial Style and Energy Charge. It just feels so fun jumping everywhere like Insect Glaive but with more strength and less to manage. I enjoy when a monster can put up a goof fight back but once it gets one sided I start losing interest in the actual fight. Even though with this current set and GL I can guard practically any attack I still feel very vulnerable. Like if something got through I didn't want you if I screw up with the weapon I'm gonna have a hard time and probably have to Emergency Heal. I don't care about the length of the quest more like how fun it is. I hardly even gather tbh lol. But yeah I am actually planning on making some fun sets to just look silly or something as well. Armor skills are great but if someone can speedrun something deadly without armor nor skills without damage then I don't think they really matter too much besides for playstyle and to help out as support. The hunter's/prowler's skill is important rather than the stats. Though if hunting something tough I'd want everyone having good skills to either boost themselves or the party up or to make the monster have just simply a bad day lol

In MH4U I've been using Zamtrios G armor because: 1. I like the design, 2. I love the Part Breaker skill as a Hammer main, and 3. I love proving people wrong that it isn't a good hammer set. So far in MHGen I've been using my maxed out Low-Rank Glavenous armor because of that Mind's Eye skill along with the amount of fire monsters I fight and yes I use it vs Deviants and High-Ranks.

When i play MH i just focus on whatever armor skills i like. I usually try to get speed eating, sharpness +1 and earplugs on my blademaster set. Never cared much for things like attack up and such, i dont mind if the hunt takes a bit longer as long as its a comfortable hunt. Only real exception to the rule is for GS where i get critical draw and focus cus its just so damn satisfying.
As for gunner i only use bows so all i really care about is focus and sometimes load up. Any other skills i might get next to those (depending on what else my set has) are just extras.
Unfortunately in gaming nowadays there has to be some meta. A lot of people cant or dont want to think for themselves so they need some meta they can adhere to and to justify it they try to get others to play the meta as well so they dont have to feel bad for doing it. My advice is to tell them to shove it and find out what you like for yourself. If in the end that happens to be whats meta then at least you figured it out for yourself. Try to use every weapon once or twice and try to use every armor skill, things like speed eating and tremor resist, at least once to see if you like the effects. You dont need to try things like attack up since that has a very straightforward effect, you know what thats gonna do, so focus on the skills with gameplay effects. Dont let someone else tell you how to play, figure it out yourself. Dont be afraid to take advice though, just dont let them make you feel like you have to do what they say or else youre bad or w/e.

Been out of the hunt for a little while now. Got super burned out after 3UHD and only played like 50 hours of 4U before I had to tell myself I needed to take a break. The "Meta" in MH has been a problem since the early days. My first online MH game was Tri (as I imagine it was for most) and the later life of that game was almost hostile towards newer hunters. A trend that I knew would only continue as MH started to grow. Lo and behold, here we are. I have always been one to play my own way. Using my own knowledge to play the best I can. Always will. That's what makes Monster Hunter so beautiful with it's gameplay. Almost like fighting game where players hone their own style of combat.
I plan to get back into the Hunt when MH5 rolls around. Personally can't wait to jump back into this phenomenal series.

I got into MH in 3U so no online for me, but I saw a lot of elitists in Grank in 4U. I noticed I got kicked way more for using a popular mixed set. I guess they hate seeing it or think its n00by? (tbh you go from the "pls help" hunters in low and high rank to the DPS elitists in Grank. Gen probably had all those Grankers buttmad capped at High Rank.
I started getting into mixing properly in Gen and I do get tired of everyone with the max crit sets, Deviant armours took the creativity out of mixing end game sets so you end up seeing a lot of the same stuff anyway. But let people do their own thing.
I make fun sets, I made an areal bow set and a guild bow set with constitution +2 so I could solely use the double back hop move - it looked cool af too. Most of my mixed sets have 3 skills and 1 of them is probably the barrage earrings.
Meta isnt about the ultimate set IMO, a healthy meta is one where you get loads of options and different synergy skills. Gen really limits that with no Grank and Deviant sets being too good.
I honestly worry about the meta and even just the feeling and the theming of the game series. Im starting to think that Styles and Arts have had a much larger knock-on effect on the series - I really like styles but big super moves just doesnt feel in the spirit of Monster Hunter.

I'm a function > form hunter. Like, I'll mix sets even if they look kinda stupid if I can get the most skills out of a weapon combination. But the beauty of Monster Hunter is like, you should play how you want to, that's kind of the point of the game. I don't usually put the most commonly used skills if that makes sense, I kinda gloss over challenger and critical skills for things like focus for greatsword or artillery for gunlance, maestro for hunting horn, knockout king for impact charge blades etc.
I agree though, if you're trying to enforce someones ideals or what armorset they're using then you're kinda missing the point of the game.

As someone who was surrounded by other players shoving meta-sets/Highest-DPS possible sets, and being hounded by them for using more non-meta/unconventional sets (IG, Sleep DB, etc) I was in a pretty toxic environment. Eventually it got so toxic that I simply no longer had fun playing the game.
Recently, I broke off from that entire group. And honestly, this video was the type I needed to break the old mindset I had developed in that group, (Mindset being that I was inferior in comparison to these meta-set users.)

Me and my brother have been playing since MH1. We really got into it once the Freedom series came out. This was back when you couldn't really play multinational by using simple wifi. We tried all sets, all weapon types, different ways of killing monsters day in and day out. After a while the love of the game the love of learning and getting better gets to a point where it stops. The game skills tap out. That's when you experiment with different sets, different combos, but the initial love of the game is lost. I ruined the game series trying to get that passion again. Meta play style comes from people who cap out, those who experimented. It's much easier to let the die hard fans put in the time and effort and then copy and paste their play style

My friends and I speedrun with specific sets, or styles, or suboptimal builds. It's challenging and fun. Kind of like the Arena, and ridiculous stuff TeamDarkside does. That being said, if a set is not considered to be in the "best meta" category, as long as the set is strong, and the player is good, then I'm sure that if the hunt is 1 or 2 more minutes longer due to slightly less DPS, it should still be fun and enjoyable. Thankfully, I've never run into this problem on Gen. There were a lot of douches on 4U that would kick players though, and when I'd create my own rooms with the same guild quests, and get strong players -- we'd win battles in good time. While I did not play Generations and as such, I have never felt people pushing the meta, I'd like to share my opinion on the "meta" so to speak of 4U's endgame. While MH did have always at least a little bit of meta like you said (even if those were just weapon recommendations like ranged weapons against pre 3rd Gen's Plesioth), I didn't thought much of it since I was doing very well with my own playstyle and no one ever told me to play a in a certain way online. Even back in Tri when I came into first contact with meta enforcers with the Double Para/Hammer and Clust rooms, I didn't think it was importent in any way, since I could understand why people would prefer to play for maximum efficiency in these cases (Alatreon skypiercers were fucking awful to farm back then).
Now, with 4U's endgame, most people would run mixed sets with the goal of having the best skills for the kind of weapon they were using or against a certain monster (Athena's ASS comes to mind), or some popular full set. While again no one ever told me to use a certain set or skill combo, looking at the discussions back then kind of gave me the feeling that to some extend, longer time fans would look down upon people who used full sets instead of mixed ones, if these sets happened to be not one of the few the meta deemed "good", and would belittle the users of these sets by saying they were casuals of new players. Atleast thats the feeling I got back then.
I'm certainly gonna continue to play how I want to, but I sure hope that people will not let "the meta" force them to go out of their way to try and force other people to play in way they deem good enough.

@@KavalTerbang well of you're gonna play prowler I highly suggest going with a collect/pilfer prowler, those have the highest ranged damage and get 3 boomerangs at the cost of less defense, but if you can keep your distance you can get some slick damage
My personal preferred prowler rn is a pilfer one that has crit up (s) and crit up (L) to get a +30% crit on it's weapons, and I'm currently using the Grank hyper gravios weapon, it's got really high raw and with the +30% it brings it's affinity to -5%, and if your prowler gets mad it goes up to 5% crit rate, dosent sound too good, but trust me its pretty great, however there's also a cutting weapon (I forgot the name but it's Grank and it looks like a rapier) that has 195 attack on boomerangs and melee with white sharpness and 25% affinity, when adding the +30% you get 55% affinity, and a +10% for when your cat gets mad to bring it up to a 195 raw, 65% crit weapon, _so pretty good_
In summary I suggest going for weapons with good raw and spec into crits to milk as much damage out of your multi hits as possible

      •Piercing boomerangs
      •Big boomerangs
      •Mega boomerang
      •Emergency exit
•Stunt cannon (this can be swapped with whatever you'd like, but if you haven't tried this funky little cannon you should totally give it a look, it's *_slick_*)
Also bringing along some healing AI prowlers with health horn and "Go. Fight. Win!" Is a great way to support and upkeep yourself, and the extra damage helps too

Im a bit late to the discussion but, I've gotten crap for using aerial bow a few times. I tend to avoid multi player because im not a fan of getting kicked for gunning my way. Being a long time gunner main you come up with some interesting sets and tactics that may appear sub optimal or down right bad to most people who are unfamiliar with the weapon. Granted I've been gunning since freedom and even I don't know all of the ins and outs of the three ranged weapons. Im still picking up new tricks.
The biggest problem with focusing on a meta is that it can blind you to other potentially better or faster strategies and sets.

There are only 2 times I kick someone from a group. When it's an endgame hunt and the person has no active skills (no skills is fine in lower ranks as they are probably new and don't know the skill system yet) and when someone comes in and posts a quest that is not relevant to the current target, like posting a Kushala when the room target is a Deviljho, which is incredibly rude. Normally those people don't even ask if posting a different quest is okay, they just go and post them when people are already queued for the target quest. Even if they ask, the answer is no unless the rest of the group doesn't need anything from the room target anymore. Host determines the quest! But I digress. Otherwise, I don't care what weapon you use or what set you're using. You could use a set of all negative skills for all I care, as long as we have fun and you don't triple cart. I understand not being that good, but at least don't be the only one to cart. I am lenient and give one pass. Maybe you are learning a weapon and don't know when you can evade or this is your first time facing this monster. But if you triple cart 2 quests in a row, it's not fun anymore. I've triple carted in quests before. Most people have. If I do, I switch weapons to one I'm better with and that's normally all I need to do well. At least it's not like in Japan where they kick people who run prowler for no other reason than they joined the group as a prowler, which is seen as a weak play-style that's only for noobs for some reason over there.

Every time I try to post a screenshot of my hard-earned mixed sets on miiverse, 99% of comments are downright insulting, saying so-and-so skills are bad, and so-and-so weapons would be better, I hate when people give me that bullcrap.........

M.E.T.A (most effective tactic available) is a backronym. Meta is short for metagame, meaning "above and outside of the game," a term originating (as far as I know) in tabletop gaming (board games and RPGs like DnD), where it is an almost strictly pejorative term especially in RPGs for people who use knowledge outside of (and "above") the context of their game (ie what their CHARACTER knows, as opposed to them, like exact enemy stat numbers, or what other players' characters that their character is not in contact with are doing) to make optimal decisions and "win" a game that is ultimately not played to be won. There it's tied to a similar term, "Munchkin," meaning a player who again uses any advantage they can (including literally cheating, like using loaded dice or rolling the dice out of sight and then lying about their rolls) to "win" at a TTRPG.
In videogaming and strategy gaming it has a more neutral connotation, as many if not most Player versus Player games are played to be won, as opposed to creating a story, with things like story or other aesthetics being considered more of a kind of flavour or aside to the bare mechanics of the gameplay, meaning metagaming isn't a shitty thing to do, it's the smart thing to do. Here it generally refers to having a working knowledge of what tactics other people are using and how to counter them, and in sufficiently complex multiplayer games that have not existed for several decades already the metagame tends to shift rapidly as a result, as people adjust to what everyone else is using and start incrementally using different things to reap the same advantages while also countering the currently dominant strategy.
In a non-PvP (which does not mean non-competitive, as seen in TA) game like MH, it would still be pretty close to what you say- Using knowledge of hidden things like monster health and hitzones and motion values and skill effects to garner an optimal time in addition to just bringing your A-game and playing skillfully. However, because of its association with powergamers in PvP games, it has gained the backronym you cited and the connotation of simply referring to any kind of powergaming (moving it closer to "munchkin" than "metagame," which is only one small aspect of that).

Anyway that's basically just one long etymological nitpick. As for my opinion on the matter, I think people should do everything in their ability to get better at the things they enjoy, but there's certain caveats, especially when it comes to a game like Monster Hunter.
First, there are more ways to play skillfully or prove your skill than simply getting good times. Playing stylishly is more impressive than playing quickly.
Second, you should aim to be the best within the limitations you set for yourself. Even most powergamers realise this, which is why there are TAs for weapon classes that are not the best weapon for a given quest. It is more impressive to complete a hunt in a timely manner naked than to complete a hunt extremely quickly in a minmaxed set and edited charm.
Third, if someone ever insists that you need to take advantage of metagame knowledge and mechanically abusive tactics to succeed, they are both a bad player and an insecure one.
The most elitist players also tend not to know what the hell they're talking about and spew a lot of misconceptions or assumptions they have, or insist that other players rely on crutches like they do or be labeled bad. They also tend to blame anyone but themselves when they cart, I've even seen them come up with excuses when nobody else was in the area with them when it happened. People who actually play the game and make it to the high HRs tend not to care what you do as long as the monster dies and you aren't just a giant pain in the ass for them, for instance shelling them with gunlance. If you're actually a bona fide elitist (as in, one who is also an elite) you just don't play online, it's as simple as that.

Tiers of Hunters with 1 being the lowest:
1: Actual Noob, not just newbies
    2: Metards
    3: Normal Players
    4: Fashion Hunting
5: Speedrunners and Gimmick Hunting (like killing only with Bombs)

I think this discussion becomes more and more relevant in MHWI. I don't care what set anyone runs (unless it's pointless, like 430Def, no skills, no decorations and no looks in G-Rank), especially not in World, where everything is a skill. And I already had some pretty heated discussions wheather you should hunt with a set that suits your playstyle or one that's the most effective. Spoiler, I argued in favor of thesis 1... And lost due to resignation.

I think both the meta and having fun are both viable. That speaks to how good monster hunter is. You can do either and still feel great playing it.
Both are valid too. You could enjoy optimizing a fight and learning how to squeeze blood from a stone. You can enjoy playing with your own set and tackling challenges your own way and your own pace.
Both of these ways are working with different limitations. Meta, not affording mistakes or being hit, but learning to fight the monster flawlessly over time. Maximizing damage and mastery.
Non meta being working with the limitations of you favorite armor set skills and having fun that way.
Both can exist in this game and it's awesome as fuck.

to be honest find one's meta is really difficult. it's a matter of trying. my play style is really a mixture of Berserker and leroy jenkins. it's not a joke. i mash the attack button to the limit, some times i say myself "you can take that hit, you're doing damage as a trade"
in X/Gen was nice having the adept, made the bow faster, but ton of people judged my skill sets, until it become "meta" (actually there were a meta for the teostra bow) which made me laugh really hard.. now with XX i'm greatedly in love with the Brave GS. to be fair i use brave almost with any weapon (that's how much i love it)
for the skills personally not a META but it is a "weapon friendly skill" for example the allmighty critical draw with GS, if you're doing the long charge you don't get the full effect of the critical draw, but still there's a charged draw which is a guarantee critical love.
example of personal meta which has been criticized by people using Gs Brave: (neset armor (atoraru-ka's armor)
    -Attack +3 (+20 dmg)
    -critical draw (damage x 1.25)
-dragon instinct (at 2/3 or lower hp sets dragonblight but increases attack and defense, this dragon blight does not affect Valfalk/barufaruku elemental weapons)
-resentment (+20 att when your hp gauge has temporary damage (which should be ALLWAYS since brave burns you)
-resuscitate (+20 att when you have a status effect. remember that dragonblight?)
i REALLY feel confortable and powerful with this set it works marvelous for me. and my playstyle forces me to be hit most of the times, so there's nothing bad. there's been a lot of people that told me "you have to have unscathered, git gud and don't be hit! (then a konchu rolls over them and i laugh)

I just like using whatever works or "clicks" for me. Sure, I do have Dreadking with a few Hellblade weapons, but that's only when I'm online (since people got on my case about it and when I'm longswording which is my MAIN, they kick me on the spot) and I solo hunt most of the time anyway with Furious Rajang lel

That really is a bit of a confusing issue isnt it. Kicking people out just because theyll make the hunt last longer is a dick move but at the same time longer hunts can be quite stressful, especially if youre trying to farm something like apex rajang or rusted daora

I don't care if their build is meta, but I do care if a player with cutting weapons only go face and ignore the tail while they have an impact player in the party =_=

    • @97dusk
      @97dusk 5 лет назад

Preach it. As an IG main with a blunt Kinsect, my first priority is always the tail if it can be cut (not a problem on most monsters, but I'm convinced Fatalis and its subspecies have uncuttable tails). I see a lot of LS mains entirely ignoring the tail... Heck, I've seen hammers and HH mains ignore the face and go wherever. I never complain in the chat, but it does irk me.

I might be in the minority but in 700h of play on MH4U and 400 in gen the only case of "meta hunting" i stumbled upon was someone asking me if I had a set with a good fire resistance because we were gonna hunt teostras.
Granted : I don't go on MH communities on social networks.

there's a difference between using a less than optimal set and using a completely nonsensical set. I hunt online a lot and I have to say I def see more nonsensical sets than less-than-optimal sets. Like using a corona sns with a set that gives scavenger, item use up and stam recov against a lvl 10 hellblade. You have to have a better set than that I'm srry lol

qnzman578 I agree for sure, definitely if the quest is gonna be like lvl 9,10 deviants or the tougher Hyper monsters, then I do think there should be a standard of gear used. Similarly how there was a set standard for 140 GQ's in 4U. At this point is when I think it wouldn't hurt to actually give said person some advice. If they're stubborn and won't listen then you do what you gotta do and give em the boot. But if they listen, then there you go, you just helped someone out without needing to bash them or anything :)

Simple: Hunt your way if you're playing randoms online or just for fun with friends (not G3-Ex Deviants). Play meta for the more serious monsters i.e EX Deviants, Fatalis, Elder Dragons, or soloing stuff. Soloing G-Rank hypers can take 15-20 mins with non meta sets and 5-10 mins with full meta sets.

I played through the entirety of high rank and low rank in gen with the tigrex set and I find the skill that I really see a difrence with is earplugs. It let's me be more agressive without worrying about the monsters roar. and great sword with earplugs means no more roar Interupted charges. I like the meta but I don't think it is the end all be all I like playing what feels great not what feels efficent.
