  • I often get asked about what is the best meditation retreat for beginners. The answer is simple: start short and work your way up.
Jumping into a long, silent meditation retreat can potentially be problematic. Does not mean it will. Just saying, it could, and here is why. Despite the fact that retreat centers and teachers do a certain amount of “screening”, the simple fact is very few of them are qualified to recognize potential challenges arising, especially since the information provided by participants is on “the honor system”, so to speak.
Plus, if a difficult emotional or psychological problem arises, very few are qualifies to effectively manage it. “Jumping into the deep end of the pool” from the outset as a meditator, admirable as it might seem, has its risks when you have committed to many days of isolation and silence, coupled with many, many hours of sitting practice. And this is even more problematic if you are not allowed to do body-centering and grounding practices like yoga, gigong, tai chi, etc., or journaling where you can unpack and process what is coming up in your practice.

Pretty wild story. I'm fascinated with why people would want to do this, unless they're really suffering in some way and feel like something like this might help them. Is that why people do it?

The reasons why are possibly as many as are those who do it.

For me it was about wanting to get to know how my mind works
