-I started attending University in September of '84... I met a cool guy across the hall in my dorm building... he had a bunch of magazines, a small black & white T.V., and a stereo that played albums/cassettes... he said he moved into the dorm a month early to get settled in, and on his second night in Knoxville, he went down to a bar on "The Strip" and watched a new band named R.E.M. - he liked them, so he bought their album the very next day... it was called "Reckoning"... he wanted me to check it out... we went to the beer store, bought a six-pack of beer each, and went back to his dorm room... we turned "Late Nite... with David Letterman" on, on his little black & white T.V., and listened to "Reckoning"... soon after, on another night, we drank beer, watched "David Letterman", and listened to "Murmur"... I was very impressed... I liked "Reckoning" a lot, and I liked "Murmur", even more... but my favorite song, was on "Reckoning"... "Time after Time"... that semester, I bought both albums on cassette (new... $6.99 each), and wore them out... I had discovered my new, favorite band... R.E.M. !!! I was 18 years old then... now, I'm 56 years old, and they're still... my favorite band.

I discovered REM in 7th grade in 1983 due to my older brother in college at Mizzou (University of Missouri). He listen to their tapes from St Louis to Duluth, MN on way to grandparents for Christmas. I could not get the song "We Walk" out my mind. Only middle schooler who was into REM, always got people thinking REO Speedwagon and had to correct them and explain is s college band. Shaped my good taste in music. Saw them in Atlanta. Great show.

Radiohead lead singer Thom Yorke is a huge R.E.M. fan. During the early days of Radiohead such as the Pablo Honey album, Yorke was influenced by R.E.M. Both R.E.M. and Radiohead are both of my favorite alternative rock bands of all time. It doesn’t matter which one I like better. I also happen to be a fan of The Smashing Pumpkins and my other 3 favorite rock genres are Progressive, Heavy Metal and Grunge. “The Great Beyond” was my introduction to R.E.M. and since I’m a huge fan of The Simpsons, R.E.M. appeared in the season 13 episode #3 “Homer The Moe”.

It was my first summer after graduating high school. It was so incredibly different... Prior to this album I had been listening to Journey, Def Leopard etc. It definitely put my musical tastes on a totally different track.

Released on April 12, 1983, R.E.M.'s debut album was a strange but intriguing combination of rock vibrancy, folk sensibility and abstruse lyricism. It came at a time when rock was at the crossroads and defined a direction that was at once retro-influenced and forward-looking. It's a testament to the songs' undiminished melodic power and engaging, often infectious drive that they sound as fresh now as they did forty years ago.

100% agree. Murmur-Reckoning-Fables-Lifes Rich Pageant is a phenomenal run (and if you include the Chronic Town EP at the start, even better). I know it's regarded as part of the classic IRS Years output, but Document never really did it for me. Yes, there are some great songs on it, but the whole album never did it for me in the same way those first 4 albums did. Absolutely magical, and their absolute peak.
