My Bull Mastiff lived for 10 years healthy and happy. Best dog I've ever had. My best friend had a female English Mastiff during the same time and she was amazing as well
Mine were Bullmastiff x Mastiff. They were incredibly intelligent, easy to train and as they were raised with cats, rabbits, poultry and other birds from the very beginning, they accepted these creatures as part of their "family". It was also very easy to teach them not to chase other animals: as long as we remained calm, they saw nothing to fuss about. We were even able to teach them to leave all snakes alone, so though we often had these reptiles in the garden (we live in South Africa and prefer rural areas), none of the dogs were ever bitten. They were so tolerant that, when they lay out in the sunshine, lizards would clamber up onto them, migrate to their heads and wage war on any insects that landed on the dogs. We could leave them in the aviaries for extended periods of time, which was sometimes necessary as we had a general dealer shop and I sometimes needed V to come and help me. She would shut whichever dogs were with her in with the birds and when she returned, the dog(s) would be asleep with birds strutting around and on them. Our pack normally consisted of about ten to twelve individuals, all of which were focussed on protecting "mommy", my wife. They did not protect me: as leader of the pack, it was my job to attend to any threats, but if I was not around, they acted as Veronica's entourage. This is not to say that they would not come to my aid, but they waited for a cue, either from V or myself. I taught them to watch my hands and could control them with simple, seemingly innocent gestures. We NEVER used collars or chains: they responded immediately to our voices, so that these restraints were unnecessary. Other dog owners, even trainers, could not believe how obedient our dogs were. They generally lived for between ten and twelve years and some made it to fifteen. We had none of the injuries you speak of and only two (of around 30) developed cancer. One went down with demodectic mange, but we soon had it under control and eventually the mites just disappeared. Two of our training videos appear here: ruclips.net/video/c0NhE1CpXtE/видео.html and here: ruclips.net/video/A69Cwophzgk/видео.html. Best wishes and keep up the good work.
Excellent insightful clear commentary. Thanks for taking the time to post. I have a boerboel mix. Very smart and intuitive dog. Greetings and respect to all from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽
Ohh I can comment on this video!! Will has been downplaying the Boerboel. Here’s a big advantage that they have.. a dry mouth! It doesn’t mean you won’t get saliva. But it won’t be all the time. Believe me I currently have a Spanish Mastiff and the difference is very noticeable. Best dog I ever had was my Boerboel.
I grew up with a fawn Bullmastiff. She was my best friend, and we lost her when I had just turned 18. We were lucky enough to have her for 12 years!!! She was a stubborn beast, too. Even the trainer we worked with threw up his hands! But she protected us, loved us, slobbered all over everything we wore and loved to use us as her personal napkins. She's been gone for over 40 years, now, but I miss her like we lost her yesterday! And if I could afford it, I'd get another in a heartbeat 💓
Great video and your discription of both breeds is spot on. I have had Bullmastiffs (male & female) throughout my life. I am biased toward the Bullmastiff, but have no doubt a Boerboel is a fantastic pet. My male bullmastiff of 9 years died suddenly this past August and while I am still mourning his sudden death, I have started looking for another.
Thanks so much for watching Christoph! Sorry to hear about your bullmastiff, hopefully our videos can help you decided the best breed for your next dog 🐕
So sorry for your loss. I have a four year old male BullMastiff. He has a bone disease and they don’t give him a long life. I dread that day!! Good luck on your next dog!
I got 13 years out of my Bull Mastiff however the last year was tough. Hips & eyes were an issue, and he had a fall that threw out his front shoulder. At 13 his systems all started shutting down so there was no reason to extend his life. I now foster Mastiffs , currently have a large 4 year old Neo in need of a forever home. Am on the look out for a large French Bardo Mastiff for my next rescue dog for myself as there are way to many good adult Mastiffs in need to ever buy a puppy.
I've had several apbt's and apbt mixes and I'm researching Boerboels for my next dog in the coming years. They will be our only dog (right now we have 6 dogs, 4 are seniors) and it'll be a great change of pace to put all of my energy and time into a single dog. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hope you study and end get to know the kind of dog (more than just a few videos) The Boerboel is not APBT... Very Far from it. They are the opposite in many ways., Pitt's are normally human friendly, where Boerboels are naturally suspicious. VERY important you make your Boerboel feel safe and under leadership. Where a Pitt can be dangerous, it is peanuts compared to a Boerboel. These are serious dogs, and they can easily make decisions for themselves. My advise is to get a Boerboel if you have a big property it can roam and guard, and can accept that it will be suspicious to strangers, and it can take a long time before it is friendly. If that is not what you can offer the dog, the Bullmastiff is a better choice.
If you buy a Boerboel, do buy from a trusted breeder. Will be more expensive but a lot of these backyard breeders mix some uther breeds in and sell them of as Boerboel . There temperaments mort dicey and it is the Boerboel that's been been to blame.
@@henkjacobs4033 I've been researching beeders for almost 6mo. We're not getting one for a few years, still. I have a top 3 picked out. I've worked in rescue for over 20 years and know the horrid practices and tricks of bybs and those to pretend to be good breeder.
@21st Century Viking that's exactly what I'm expecting out for my next dog. I don't want strangers around my property, and that is why a Boerboel appeals to me. Of course, I'm going to socialize and fine-tune them. We're moving in the next few years to a sizable estate where an estate dog can do their thing. Also, I'm aware that apbt and Boerboels are not the same thing. That's why I'm looking into a different breed because apbt isn't cutting it. Apbt is too friendly with strangers. I need a more aloof dog. You're passionate about the breed, i can see that. Thanks for your insight.
@@toxicbangbang yes I am passionate about boerboels. I am actually picking up a female puppy next weekend in upington. Red with really black face. Also book a black or brunde male in Grobelaarshoop . They have two that is due to deliver in December .
I had both breads. The Boerloel is double the muscle mass and bone mass. Bullmastiff are not as good watch dogs as the Boerloel. Bullmastiff are awesome dogs. Since I had both breads I lean more towards the Boerloel.
Great insight! Had Boxer and 2 Bullmastiff, so definitely comfortable with Boerboel. Interesting tip of the no nonsense and a more business end of home and family protection.
I've owned bullmastiffs and fostered both. Boerboel bonds very fast and are more protective. They also are a little shorter and usually have their tails cropped. They are always working, observant, and looking for threats. Bullmastiffs have been more wary of change, slower to adjust to change and will alert strangers and protect if necessary but usually see people as friends first.
We have a Boerboel and he is amazing with a character bigger than him lol. Hes 26 months old and although hes a cuddly giant he had to be bought up with the rules an boundaries nessasary to maintain control of this giant in public an around other creatures. 😊great video guys.
We had a boerboel X bull mastiff cross we I was a kid. He was so massive and so beautiful. So gentle and loving. But still looked far to impressive for anyone to come with bad intentions. I wish I could show you all the pic. He was something unique. As an adult my baby boerboel just died at 13. I am so broken and miss her so much. I was so blessed she was super healthy until her final week.
Both breeds are very cool! Friends of mine own Tank, who is a two yr old BM and he's awesome. Just met a six mos old BM, Crosby...very laid back for a young pup. But there's a Boerboel micro breedery a half hour from my house and I was there back in April, right in the beginning of the covid-19. Amazing, I'll be getting one. I've had three English Mastiff's and can't wait for my South African Boerboel puppy!
I own a bullmastif and two 13 week old Boerboel puppies I'm glad I have my mastiff trained he's a big help with the pups thier amazing very smart easy learners if you can keep thier focus. I don't think I'll ever have to worry bout intruders
Awesome awesome video 😁. Both breeds are in my top 10 favorite dogs. I would love to raise both together 1 day. I grew up with dogs and now as an adult I can't see myself without a dog. Plus I love to feeling of security I get when im asleep, walking around my neighborhood with dogs surrounding me.
We have 5 month old male boerboel puppy - already 80 lbs - and he's incredible. A big ball of love, incredibly intelligent, and a natural protector. Great with small kids, all the neighborhood kids love him and he is so gentle with them.
Spot on about the bullmasstiff mines is so puppy like with me but no nonsense when someone come to the house .. she's so cheeky she follows me all over the house and she's so greedy and sometimes stubborn but she has never shown no aggressiveness towards me or the family we love our big bear we also have a Rottweiler and he's the same our other big bear but one thing no one would be foolish to come in our home without being invited in .. and I do love the boerboel breed as well they are all just beautiful dogs! Both of my bears are huge and muscular and very very strong!
Boerboel❤. Best dogs ever I owned one for 10 years and she was just amazing but she was unfortunately put down a few years ago. A few months ago a got another boerboel puppy and he is also a awesome dog a bit more independent than the one I owned before but he is just as loyal
I was a bull mastiff breeder for quite a few years when I was in Kelowna BC. I totally love the breed I found it much easier to train the most of my other dog's. I also raised English bull terriers. LOL they are the epitome of stubbornness. They are wonderful family pets wonderful with your family and close friends. My dogs at least greeted guests at the door the way I did. If I was apprehensive so were they if I was friendly and happy and so were they. Loved your video
I've always been a working dog breed guy. In find myself wanting a Mastiff of sorts now . I'm not old old lol 53. Having competed at a high level with working dogs , GSDs and my last Giant Schnauzer , in Protection dog sports. Highly recommend it . But now , I'm a bit slower and less active . I still hike 3 miles every day w/out fail but nothing too crazy . I'm also looking at a rescue this time instead of finding a damn /sire and waiting for the right litter like I have in the past. These series of videos on breeds is quite awesome Will. They are very appreciated and even more so is your passion with which you deliver your researched information on them.
I love the Boolmastif, but the Booorbol is my favorite I hope to own one soon and I know he/she will protect myself and my family tooo the end! Thanks for posting!
Just found this channel! I'm in Milwaukee and have owned a bullmastiff name nitro for 8 years now. 135 lbs and very athletic in his younger years. I'm going to probably get a boerboel soon.
It was really informative like really not like other channels not telling any facts and just showing pictures of dogs and telling they are active, fast, dangerous. Like bro tell me about its height, weight, health concerns. Btw your content is to the point and you earned a sub. ✌️🔥
I had a wonderful Bullmastiff. Lived to 11 1/2 yrs. was bred from 7 generations of raw food, limited vacc. She was amazing companion and very athletic. They are great dogs!, Great video. 🐾🌺😊💯👍🏽
I have a male boerboel (10 months 140lbs) and he is awesome. Not for a novice dog owner. Boerboels are dogs turned up to 11. He is strong, energetic, loyal, protective, extremely intelligent and a big snuggle bear…with us. This breed are not labs. My boy is not “friendly”. He isn’t unfriendly, he just doesn’t like to be messed with by anyone outside his family. Won’t bit or anything. But he will let everyone know when he no longer feels like being touched. For some reason people feel ok just walking up and touching him. It’s the craziest damn thing I’ve ever seen. We are already seeing his protective nature manifest and he seems to do it instinctually. We just have to make sure we never put him in a situation where he feels he has to actually do some protecting. I’ve never seen a dog stare with such intensity and intelligence. It can be a bit disconcerting at first. Also, he’s built like a brick shithouse. Just a tank. Short and thick and more athletic than something his size has any right to be! Wonderful dog. Just the best.
I have had a few Bulls, they are such wonderful pups, and there life span is pretty decent given the size. I have a young boer boel under a year now, and I love him as well, they seem to be very similar, but I find it the BB has more energy then the BM. But both are great with situational awareness even at a puppy my BB is alert and aware magnificent
boerboel is far from the serious business agro only dog portrayed. They can be super fun even at advanced ages like 9 to 10 years old. They are deeply loyal, and if you have one around, you will be safe from the most formidable threats. I love this breed, but frankly my 1100 sqm property is not ideal for them.
@Agnes Olsvik They are absolutely not wanderers. Our girl will stay close by and always look to you for confirmation. They want to be by their people always. They can stay alone for a few hours but can be prone to separation problems and can be destructive out of boredom. Start leaving them only an hour at a time and work up to a few hours.
I wish I would have seen a video like this maybe 9 months ago or so. I have a Boerboel that turned 1 in April 2020. He is very smart, playful and very hard headed. I don't know why but he is afraid of everyone, hes been like this since we first got him. He sticks to me like velcro and he doesn't really realize his true size. He romps around like he's a small puppy. He is 139lbs so far and is always wanting attention. He does calm down and like you said gets a little lazy after a while.
Love bothe these breeds I am considering getting an English mastiff. I have a rottie and Caucasian shepard at the moment of which I absolutely adore both of them
My buddy was fixing my house and I had the great experience of puppy sitting his boerbull. Its 6 years later now and Ben scratched the door to get to me to practice the only command I taught him. The command was 'Uppie' ...shoulda re thought that...like being hit by a quarterback with slobber. Ah well.
My second dog was a Boerboel, he was definitely a goofy acception to the rule. He dug himself a hide under a bush near the kitchen and would open doors to check in on anyone sleeping in
Once again Will great job. I’d have to agree with you completely my boss has a boarbull and I have my bull mastiff both males his is older mines still a pup but u can see the difference when they hang together. It’s actually weird everyone says that the bull mastiff does better with the opposite sex but my guy does better with the same sex. He always wants to fight our female GSD but is soooo submissive to any male he comes accross I find this sooo weird.
@@colettephilcox231 he might but once he becomes sexually mature he might get aggressive. If he's been socialized with certain animals and not others he might be calm for awhile with the ones he knows and aggressive with the ones he doesnt
a very good summary and discussion. The bullmastiff has more emphasis in its breed history to be a guardian mainly against humans, whereas the boerbel has the element of "ranch guardian" bred in, so it also protects more instinctively against wild animals. Also, I don't know the extent to which its true with boerbels, but bullmastiffs are one of those breeds that don't always get along with other dogs, so you have to be careful leaving them with other dogs because the basic assumption has to be they may start fighting, and bullmastiffs are very very strong, and not averse to fighting with other dogs. If they don't have the thickest necks in the canine world, they're up there. They have enormous thick necks. From various tapes I've seen of boerbels, they seem a little more comfortable around other dogs than bullmastiffs, which don't always get along with other dogs.
Our bullmastiff thinks it is a GSP. Funniest thing ever. kid younot! He retrieves and everything. Comic relief is right. He is also very smart. Learns very quickly and bknows how to open every donor in our house. But best of all, he is so gentle! Even as a puppy.
All type of Mastiffs are my mind of dogs i don't like the drool so I'm putting neo at the bottom end only for that reason my mastif which had corso in it was the most loving obedience and protective dog and I got him as a rescue so it shows u don't always need to get a puppy for silly money they go for , looking for a new dog now
Love your videos, and I watch them often. For me, there is nothing like a Boerboel. I have a female Boerboel and a male Corso, and the seriousness with which she guards is something I always have to be mindful of. He will let you know he is there, but she will seriously hurt someone or thing that has ill intentions. They love and they love deeply. You hit that nail on the head.. socialized constantly as a puppy, and it definitely did not translate into adulthood. And I'm so cool with that. They both are my Babies and I love them more than anything, but Boerboel is my breed for life. Keep up the great work man.. your videos are much needed and appreciated.

Can’t wait for the Boerboel channel!
is he getting a boerboel?
Me too Boerboel is the best
I have a 9 month male he’ showed no protection ability so far still a puppy though lol

My Bull Mastiff lived for 10 years healthy and happy. Best dog I've ever had. My best friend had a female English Mastiff during the same time and she was amazing as well
Love the Boerboel!!!!!
I’m glad I can finally let you know I love this channel and your intelligence for k9’s. You have greatly increased my knowledge of most bully breeds.
Thanks so much Gail!
@@willathertonbullmastiffsho7064 Can you do English Mastiff vs Presa Canario, Thanks. Love your podcasts
I always and would always love boerboel, mine is so powerful, that I keep loving him.
I can truly say you did your homework with these two breeds and I can appreciate your comparison. Can’t wait until your next comparison 👍🏼
I know what you feel😢
Had an English Mastiff until he passed, and am now looking to get a Boerboel when we move to our new 5 acre property. Can't wait!
Was blessed to adopt a boerbol- best dog ever!!
We have 10 puppies available around Xmas
Once a Bullmastiff, always a Bullmastiff. That's all there is to say, best dogs.
They are one of the best as they were bred for game keepers so yes they are one of the best guard dogs .
Great insight! Had Boxer and 2 Bullmastiff, so definitely comfortable with Boerboel. Interesting tip of the no nonsense and a more business end of home and family protection.
A had a boxer now. A boerboel no difference so far
@NewKidzOnTheBlockFAN NewKidzOnTheBlockFAN ohh sure a have mutt you arrogant prick
He’s 9month
I've owned bullmastiffs and fostered both. Boerboel bonds very fast and are more protective. They also are a little shorter and usually have their tails cropped. They are always working, observant, and looking for threats. Bullmastiffs have been more wary of change, slower to adjust to change and will alert strangers and protect if necessary but usually see people as friends first.
My bullmastiff is very protective and started at 8 months old he started really protecting the property and family
This info was short and very in depth. Loved it and will subscribe. I'm a Boerboel Lover!!!!!
Thanks for the sub!
I've owned a Boerboel, gigantic beautfull dog but so gentle and calm at homel! Far more carefull than ever what dog, I miss that big, gently guy :-(
I LOVE Mastiff breeds! Never had a more loyal dog!
Is that America @Michael Brinkley as I'm in UK and looking for this type of breed masigf type without paying stupid money

Owning a boerboel is a whole new experience especially that protection drive

@Boerboel Magazine yes, I would love a channel dedicated to boerboels
@Boerboel Magazine no videos yet.......... Subscribed though
Interesting. Keep it up. Love the boerboel
Thanks for watching ❤️
I was a bull mastiff breeder for quite a few years when I was in Kelowna BC. I totally love the breed I found it much easier to train the most of my other dog's. I also raised English bull terriers. LOL they are the epitome of stubbornness. They are wonderful family pets wonderful with your family and close friends. My dogs at least greeted guests at the door the way I did. If I was apprehensive so were they if I was friendly and happy and so were they. Loved your video
I love the yellow lab on the couch behind you. Apparently you didn't tell her you were doing a video. Lol. They have no Shame.
Thanks for posting!
we have had bullmastiffs for close to 30 years i am really trying to breed a black one out of our 3 we have now love this channel

Just loved my bullmasstiffs. Gentle giants.
Never believed in teleporting until i saw that dog behind you do it😂
🙈
That was funny how he appeared on the couch like nothing.
Where can I get a pup?
Had a mastiff b4 he lived to 11 years. But I would love to own a borebol now as my new family dog.
A long time ago Bullmastiff, English Mastiff, French Mastiff And Napolitan Mastiff were like Boerboel is today.
Your great to listen to, I have a male 12 year old pity x and pure Amstaff female pup now 12 months old
Love your English, dude! South Africa 'attracted' Dutch and German settlers. I wish you the best.
I've seen a lot of boerboels live up to 12-14 and be perfectly healthy. It tends to be diet and exercise consistency.
Boerboels are almost perfect dogs ...
@@_Ringfitness that's so true, my boy sticks to me like glue, if I turn around he's there
@@desmondleroux3444 haha I know you can’t even go to the bathroom alone anymore
Excellent .... I want one of each
I wish I would have seen a video like this maybe 9 months ago or so.
I hope our channels helps as your dog grows more!
I have a Bullmastiff Apollo.. and was very curious about the difference..
I definitely appreciate your videos 🥰
Boerboel💯💯💯
Best damm dog on the planet
Best dog I ever had so loyal and gentle will not anything happen to u.. Very protective of kids also. And agile and. Muscleer..
Both very good dogs on the right hands , I love all mastiff breeds 👍🏻
Love bothe these breeds
I am considering getting an English mastiff. I have a rottie and Caucasian shepard at the moment of which I absolutely adore both of them
I have a Boerbol. Best dog ever
My cousins had a Boerboel. His name was Max. He was the sweetest dog!!
Boerboels win hands down...but I may be bias ;)
My buddy was fixing my house and I had the great experience of puppy sitting his boerbull. Its 6 years later now and Ben scratched the door to get to me to practice the only command I taught him. The command was 'Uppie' ...shoulda re thought that...like being hit by a quarterback with slobber. Ah well.
Im definitely considering a Boerboel for my next pet
My second dog was a Boerboel, he was definitely a goofy acception to the rule. He dug himself a hide under a bush near the kitchen and would open doors to check in on anyone sleeping in
Excellent! Now i know for sure that I have a boerboel
I really love dogs and they are my pet
Once again Will great job. I’d have to agree with you completely my boss has a boarbull and I have my bull mastiff both males his is older mines still a pup but u can see the difference when they hang together. It’s actually weird everyone says that the bull mastiff does better with the opposite sex but my guy does better with the same sex. He always wants to fight our female GSD but is soooo submissive to any male he comes accross I find this sooo weird.
That will change when he turns 2
the dude I really hope he becomes chill with both male and females.
@@colettephilcox231 he might but once he becomes sexually mature he might get aggressive. If he's been socialized with certain animals and not others he might be calm for awhile with the ones he knows and aggressive with the ones he doesnt
the dude ya it’s the same with most breeds
Its Boerboel and they have nothing to do with Bull type dogs smh this guy has no idea what he's talking about
Love my boerboel!!!
You should be a teacher your voice is so assertive
a very good summary and discussion.
Your accent sounds similar to the Northmen in Game of Thrones, specifically like Robb Stark.
Our bullmastiff thinks it is a GSP. Funniest thing ever. kid younot! He retrieves and everything. Comic relief is right. He is also very smart. Learns very quickly and bknows how to open every donor in our house. But best of all, he is so gentle! Even as a puppy.
My brother has a Rhodesian Ridgeback but it looks just like the Boerboel. Weighs 120 lbs with a massive head. Very calm, very smart and very imposing.
Hi there, have you done a video on nutrition for boerboel?
Thank you from the US for using lbs and inches.
Both my bullmastiffs are over 160 pounds. Wonderful dogs.

All type of Mastiffs are my mind of dogs i don't like the drool so I'm putting neo at the bottom end only for that reason my mastif which had corso in it was the most loving obedience and protective dog and I got him as a rescue so it shows u don't always need to get a puppy for silly money they go for , looking for a new dog now
As mine passed away at 7
Enjoy all the content keep it up.
Keep up the great work man.. your videos are much needed and appreciated.
thanks for the lecture on the difference between the bullmastif and boer boel. Great information.
Had them both and love both breeds. No contest the Boerboel will totally destroy bull mastiff.
