    Possum Pete is my baby who regularly visits my backyard. He is a Virginia opossum. Here in the South, we call them possums. We never get them mixed up with those possums in Australia.

    People used to think that the opossum purposely played a trick on its enemies by pretending to be dead, but now we know that it sort of passes out when danger is near!

    They’re my most favorite animal. I live these adorable little trash cats. We have one that has one of its dens near my home and whenever it’s around using that den, I’ll feed it cans of cat food. I love them so much.

      Ahh! It's so nice to here about someone who actually likes them!! So many people really don't and they seriously don't deserve that. 💜 It must be cool to have one so near your house!

    5,000 ticks a year?! That is so impressive! I used to work with a sweetie opossum named Shelia! I miss her, but she was a great ambasador! It was great to see another awesome video from you guys highlighting an often misunderstood species 💚

      Shelia is a great opossum name! I bet it was a treat to work with her. 💜

    While burning a brush pile in spring, I saw one run out. Then 10 min later 5 babies! I quick like bunny scooped em up before hawks could, kept em in a bucket with blankets until I hunted momma down. She played dead and I let the babies out beside her and they zoomed str8 into the pouch! Cute little chits...

    I love opossums so much, and they're so good with pest control!
    Last year my mother came across one right outside her door, and although we haven't seen it again, we still hope to reincounter "Bob" someday. Every time we hear a rustling of leaves at night we joke that it's them.
    I didn't know about their tactic of playing dead though, that's really interesting! And smart to release some bad smells to better sell the act

    I had fed the mother of the opossum that lives under my back porch all year around. She faught off cats for the spot so I let her keep it. This was abt 5 years ago. At least one baby will stay behind when the rest leave or one will always return to the porch usually during the winter and then just stays. They always have a few fights with the cats still. But they all work together seems to keep mice away. Oh I'm still feeding a medium sized opossum under the back porch. She will have babies and the cycle continues

    I was a little startled to see one eating out of my feral cat's plates outside. It's the first time I've seen one in our area but I shouldn't be that surprised because I have seen raccoons more than a few times. Opossums seem pretty shy and he quickly moved away and went somewhere else when I went outside.

    I never knew Opossums have such a short lifespan!
    I enjoy the Virginia Opossum much more over the Common Raccoon.
    I live in a quiet suburban-like neighborhood of a city and get these cute creatures. I even saw a mother with 3 young holding onto her in March 2019 on my rear deck.

      I was pretty shocked to learn they have short lifespans, as well. That mama opossum with her babies sounds so cute!

    Saw an opossum in my yard last year. Little guy looked rough & smelled awful. Possibly sprayed by a skunk recently. But he still ate the apples I put out for him 😂.

    An attempt was made to create a stuffed opossum and label it as a Billy possum to counter the teddy bear, but it bombed.

    Love these little guys. Super misjudged creatures. One correction though, they don't actually play dead, they may stay completely still but when they pass out it's much more like what happens to a fainting goat.

    I'm sure squirrels can't carry rabies, I may be wrong though

    • @AnimalFactFiles
      @AnimalFactFiles  4 года назад +3

      Technically any mammal has the potential, but squirrels are a lower risk animal. Here's some more information on this: rabies.emedtv.com/rabies/rabies-and-squirrels.html

      The rabies virus can also infect birds, though it is really bad at it, and we don't have any cases of birds spreading the virus after getting it.

    They are amazing creatures . Had one here for year or a bit longer, and make, he was actually sweet, and he would walk right in with feral cats to eat, rare to see in Minnesota, but saw one female too, they are aggressive, and smaller. Thanks so much for video on them ! 👍👍🙂💖

    0:37 There are two Opossum species found in North America. The Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana), found in (Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica), Mexico, United States and Canada. Then the Common Opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), found in (Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama), and creeps into Southern Mexico.

    Fun fact: these are one 9f the few animals that live shorter lives in captivity than in the wild. We currently aren't sure why

    • @AnimalFactFiles
      @AnimalFactFiles  4 года назад +3

      Oh wow! I feel like I was reading the opposite. The idea of their lives being shorter in captivity is sad!! 😔 Where were you learning this, I would love to read more about it?!

      @@AnimalFactFiles in proper care, they live longer. It's just people not feeding them properly and letting them get obese that kills them quick.

    Lol I'm not kidding. I just stepped outside and the opossum was chasing off another cat. She won't give up her spot. I wld rather have the opossum living under the porch than the cats cause they spray and stink but opossum smell isn't that bad. Although I can tell at night when she is up to something cause I can smell rotten animals but it's just her being a bit lmao she hates her neighbor cats. Annnnd I think she can control how much and for how long that smell lasts.
