As you say, there are too few music performance scenes this season. This is my personal guess, but perhaps Kyoto Animation has not yet recovered its strength to the same extent as before. It is said that the performance scenes require a great deal of time and skill in animation, as they have to be shown to the viewer using only music and drawings. It is sad to say, but I think that is the reason...
Some fault also lies with Taki sensei, he knows his stuff when it comes to music and works really hard to improve the band but he doesnt explain his reasoning when it is necessary. I am not saying he has to justify his every action he is the expert after all but for the big decisions where a big part of the ensemble starts to show doubt it wouldnt hurt to state your reasoning. It has been like that since the first episode, he called the band out for slacking but only went into detail when the former trombones asked for criticism. 7:20 I also was annoyed at that part, Kumiko tries her best.

Even tho i really really like Kumiko's character (she's my 3rd favorite after Yuuko and my best girl Mizore LOL), i still don't think people in the club HAVE to love Mayu's character for her to be included....Mayu is in a very terrible position, since she knows she is "disturbing" the order here (taking Kumiko's place), but she really didn't do anything to anyone. I know people will call out that this is not like S1 (Reina vs Kaori), bc in there, Reina was CLEARLY better, and in here both Kumiko and Mayu are basically the same....but if Mayu is better, she should be chosen, even if she is slightly better. See, in my opinion, this is not a popularity poll. People shouldn't be chosen based if "the other club members are familiar with them and like them" or not. Mayu is new here? Yes, she is. This should matter? No, IT SHOULD NOT. Reina wasn't liked by people back in S1, but she still got chosen over Kaori. I'm just saying this bc, as much as people hated that Kumiko lost the soli, they are after the gold. They are after the gold since S1. Again, even If two member have ALMOST the same level of talent, the one who is slightly better should be chosen. The people in the club "having a problem" with this and putting all onto Kumiko's shoulders is also a consequence of people not accepting Taki's decision, which makes all this even more stressful to Kumiko herself.

丽奈正是因为她的偏执，让久美子从一个无所谓的、没有追求的高一新生，变成了会库亚西、想吹的更好的久美子。这也是为什么说丽奈对久美子是特别的人。
但丽奈也正因为她的偏执，以自我为中心，几乎不考虑她人感受的作风，让高三的部长久美子背负了太多她不应该背负的东西。
