He came from the underground, literally. BTS was birthed as an anti-establishment group. If you notice at FESTA, it was RM and Yoongi, the two most counter-culture members, who were experiencing the most severe crisis. You observed that he was muffled. I believe that as BTS rose to the point where they were co-opted by their government as soft-power influencers, RM became more and more conflicted, feeling as though he'd lost his true voice. How does one speak truth to power while representing that same power? It seems that he became so overwhelmed by this public persona that he became disconnected from who he thought he was. Coupled by general leader burnout and facing military enlistment, it's no wonder that he'd lost his way. I'm just so glad that he's "come back" to himself through the process of creating this album. Say what you will about BH, the label, rightfully, gave the members free rein to create, ironically, exhibiting the power of their original mission "Music & Artists for Healing."

You need to watch Mini & Moni Musiv. RM discusses with Jimin the album each song the concepts and motivations behind them.. They go deep and anytime we get to peak into Kim Namjoon's mind is time well spent. 💜

i saw someone talking about a theory, that the 4 characters in RM's LOST! are based on the 4 jungian archetypes. So everyone is RM but different parts of himself. And then there is RM as the 5th character which brings together all the parts and create the whole human and also artist RM(Namjoon) that we see on the stage
    1st character : Anima/Animus (the girl)
The unconscious feminine side of a man. It represents the feminine aspect that is suppressed in men.
In many cultures, men and women are encouraged to adopt traditional and often rigid gender roles. jungian suggested that this discouragement of men exploring their feminine aspects and of women exploring their masculine aspects served to undermine psychological development. Integrating both the feminine and masculine aspects of our personality into an authentic unified whole is a healthy part of human development.
2nd character: The Shadow ( the guy who smiles )
The shadow is a Jungian archetype that consists of life instincts. It is part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings. The shadow forms out of our attempts to comply with cultural norms and expectations. It is this archetype that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society but also to one's own personal morals and values. It might include things such as envy, greed, prejudice, hate, and aggression.
By this we can see why this character might represent the shadow, is the character which actions are find the most unacceptable by cultural norms and expectations. It represent RM shadow and parts of himself that deviates from what the society considers 'normal'
3rd character: the persona (the tall guy wearing a tie)
The persona is how we present ourselves to the world. The word "persona" is derived from a Latin word that literally means "mask." The persona represents all of the different social masks that we wear among various groups and situations. It acts to shield the ego from negative images. And this is exactly why this character is working so good for persona. Is not someone who is getting out of normal in the MV, is always there doing 'what it should do and how it should react'. We can see how RM is checking the character and seeing the person trying to think about probably 'what it should do'
4th character: the self ( the shortest guy)
The self is an archetype that represents the unified consciousness and unconsciousness of an individual.
You can see how there are sections in which RM and the character are having similar actions. It's always the character that is doing the most during the whole MV: opening the door, checking the stage and the path to get out of maze.
5th character: RM the human(with all the parts of himself unified) .
All the other parts of himself are making him the human and artist we see today on the stage, you can see how the other 4 characters are making a human ladder for him for RM to get on stage and remain under the stage even after the lights.
While we see the artist RM on stage there are many parts of him making him a complex human being with good and bad as everyon else. Trying to navigate through life feeling lost while also being an artist
Something else I just noticed .. look at their ties. Anima & Persona have neatly knotted ties. Self's tie is... there, but untied. Shadow & RM himself wear no ties.

This is exactly what Namjoon said the album was about, like if you’re having a great time, everything looks like is working out why are you still feeling as an outsider, like you don’t belong anywhere?
For me, he delivered the message so well, with his music and the album itself he said it’s okay to feel lost, sometimes we will be the right person as well as the wrong one.
Musically i can’t even say anything, he truly outdid himself, his album is perfect and i hope time give justice to it.
ps: going right now to patreon 🙌🏻

No, they are all him... different parts of Namjoon... they are all wearing the same name tag...Namjoon. He is coming back to himself in reality... all the processing is in his mind until he is ready to present then Namjoonie comes out but they are all him in his head processing life, work, writing, music, goofiness, clumsey...etc.

After watching the start of the MV multiple times since release, and seeing it here just now -- it finally hit me about what the "talk show hosts" were doing. The way they're acting, we can't tell if they really like RM or if they're just putting on an act... which is actually how real-world talk show hosts are sometimes like. They always present themselves as happy and welcoming, but who knows if they really like or respect the guests they have on the show. They have to act like they like everyone. As BTS' popularity in the US blew up and they appeared on just about every major US talk show starting in 2017, I'm sure they must have felt unsure at times about just how genuine these people were. I won't mention the name, but one of those hosts seemingly, and infamously, "turned" in his attitude towards BTS -- then it became this whole process with Army trying to identify which host was still BTS-friendly and seemingly the most genuine. I think there was only one left, in the end -- and that was Jimmy Fallon. But who knows if anything has changed since then. Also, Stephen Colbert hasn't done anything problematic, BTS-wise. 😅

In a world of bland homogeneous pop. RM makes you stop and think. Its strangely addictive and after a 4th or 5th listen... its a favourite. In a world of fast fashion and fast pop designed more for the fast buck than art. RM is that rare breed. A successful artist with alot to lose who just wants to make music. He trusts that his fans are not stupid and will enjoy complex ideas, interesting sound scapes and music designed to provoke your own imagination not be disposable brain dead junk.

warning, this will be looong 😬😭 just so many thoughts
my interpretation leaned towards the emotional states aspect that you mentioned. the MV starts with RM being introduced for his performance and ends with him having supposedly sung the whole song, except he looks confused, like waking from a trance. On my first watch I thought the director's vision showed RM's 'mental scape', a contrast b/w 2 extremes - feeling and not feeling.
feeling: the chorus' lyrics refer to clubbing, freedom & being on cloud 9 - all of which evoke very expressive imagery. situations in which emotions are at an all-time high. where you let go and let yourself get lost. not content or necessarily happy, but loose and chaotic. this is the part when he's running - and stumbling the poor boy :(( - around with his friends (they could be different mindsets or personas as you said)
    not feeling:
living life on autopilot, straight-laced and unimaginative (by choice or social pressure) - shown thru the performance he seems to have successfully pulled off, but doesn't remember doing? like its a performance we weren't even shown but can all probably visualize - it could be a metaphor for all preconceived notions/lifepaths and their predictability/monotony. the mv could also represent dissociation - when thoughts become so haywire that u just shut down and go thru the motions.
basically my take is about being lost in one of these extremes, or losing yourself trying to balance the two. if the 'feeling' part is his temptations the 'not feeling' night show part is reality, which he crashes back to at the end. like whoops! come back down u got work to do.
anyways thats all 😅, love ur reactions, can't wait for the album review!

Context please take note RM is the leader of BTS and BTS made Hybe. He has to have been aware of the major hate campaign was about to hit BTS. Evidence in a live as he was talking about making and releasing this music. Someone said he looked heartbroken. He replied yes I can be heartbroken a little bit. I've been dealing with all these shits for the last 10 years. Min Hee Jins 1945 plan was always a press deluge of false accusations once BTS was gone to the army.... She says the plan is not real but we see it in acted in real time. Accusations spread that have been proved false in court are emblazoned across the front pages again. New acusations like BTS is part of a cult etc. The worst smear campaign we have seen so far. For RM that part of being leader has been a soulless endless grind. No wonder RM is so lost and searching for a safe place where he can be comfortable at last.
