Pani Puri (Puchka) in Kolkata - One of The BEST Indian Street Food Snacks!

- Pani puri, also called puchka in Kolkata, is one of the best Indian street food snacks. I loved snacking on them when I was in Kolkata, India.
There are few Indian street foods more intriguing, tempting, and as popular as something known as pani puri. In Kolkata, they are known as puchka and in other parts of India they are referred to as golgappa, but they are all quite similar, and the most common name is just pani puri. These snacks are widely available in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Puri is the world for a deep fried piece of dough, which in this case is a little hollow ball about the size of a golf ball. It's crispy like a chip. Pani is the Hindi word for water, so both together make up chips and water.
Pani puri is available all over India, but in this Indian street food video, I'm on the streets of Kolkata for my first taste of a pani puri. As soon as I rolled up, the vendor first handed me a small bowl that was made from a leaf. The bowl was tiny, only able to hold a single pani puri at a single time. It was time to begin round one. The vendor began by grabbing a puri from his big stockpile, an entire tower of puris, and he then poked a hole in it with his thumb. He then added some masala spiced potatoes, a few spices and finally dipped into a bucket of water. Now it's not just plain water that fills the puris, in this case it was tamarind infused water including extra spices, onions, and cilantro. So after the pani puri (puchka) was completely assembled, the vendor then handed it to me by placing it in the small leaf bowl. Huddled around the vendor, I grabbed the puri, and plopped the entire combination of ingredients into my mouth in a single bite. You have to take a single bite, of the ingredients will all spill out. What greeted my mouth was an extremely delicious burst of crunchy was transformed into a flavorful gush of the spicy tamarind water. It was a culinary sensation like I'd never had before, a contrast of flavors and textures that really went well together. As soon as I had chewed down my first pani puri, the vendor was immediately ready with another fresh one, and placed it into my bowl again. It's important to eat pani puri one at a time so they don't get soggy from the water. I ate a round of five, though I wanted to stand there indefinitely and eat more and more.
I mentioned above, pani puri is a favorite Indian street food, and it's available all over the country. There are a number of different variations and alterations of the snack, but the ones in Kolkata are normally filled with tamarind water that's salty and sour. If you are in Kolkata, be sure to take a wander around the New Market where you'll find all kinds of chaotic action including a ton of delicious street food.

Pani Puri - A Favorite Indian Street Food!
Will do Maria Falvey !
It's also good with some chopped onion! Loved the street food in India...♥
he was selling it for 5 for Rs 10. I heard the convo when the guy with glasses arrived and started barganing. I love all your videos ! Do you just travel? What do u do for living?
kannav bedi here in punjab they sell 'em for bout ..like ... 6 for rs.40
+Mark Wiens put some coriander and small chopped onions in gupchup/pichku/pani puri.. heaven hahahah
The Indian guy who was bargaining at the end said the right thing. I lived in Kolkata during that time and everywhere the cost of Golgappas were 6 for 10Rs. When he asked to the seller why 4 for 10rs then the seller replied I will give you 5 for 10Rs. If he could have wait another five minutes until that American guy leaves he might get 6 Golgappas for 10Rs. It is very clear that we Indians charge extra money from the westerner.
Ripp off
+Gourav Das They do that everywhere. People make some extra cash off of foreigners because the foreigners don't know much better and are happy to pay whatever. I myself don't mind if people overcharge me overseas as long as it's still reasonably priced, imo
***** true!
dude believe me they can afford 1$ is 50rs and min pay is 10$ per hour
+Gourav Das to be fair mark isn't being ripped off for a lot, 50percent markup for foreigners is actually decent price. normally its 200% mark up
Hey Joel, yes man such a delicious combination of ingredients and unique - it's like wet chips - who would eat that in other parts of the world?!
legends never drop their leaf plates without gulping in the remaining tamarind water... ha ha ha... just kidding, awesome video as always...
Thanks a lot Mike! I agree, the crazy atmosphere is one of the reasons street food is so good and entertaining at the same time!
My favourite snack in India BY FAR ! So delicious and spicy :)
+Thibault Tresca it really is an amazing indian snack! lets fraaandship over some indian balls :P
Thibault Tresca Have u ever tested it?? It's really delicious....
Hey Jimmy, this is quite a diverse and interesting snack and full of flavor. I'm glad I didn't get sick too!
Hey Hanuman, my belly was very happy! I luckily didn't experience anything too bad!
Thank you so much for watching, hope you can visit someday!
that guy in the sunglasses says... how much... and the vendor replies 4 for Rs 10. and the guy says since when.... LOL :D
I was there for 4 years in kolkata...and i enjoyed a lot of pani puris there. So yummyyy....mouth watering ....reallyyy !!
Barnali's Kitchen Exactly, No one should miss it.
Hi to all of you as well, and huge thanks to you all for watching. With the large Indian population in Canada (though maybe more so in Toronto?) you might be able to find pani puri there?! Hope you can try this!
Love how he adopts all the traditions and cultures of all the places he travels to.
Whether it be trying food from the stinkiest of places or using his hands ( which is a strict no no for so many westerners) .
True hallmark of a global citizen . Love from India :)
After all these years, I never fail to come back to this video! Thanks Mark :) you've got to go to Samoa sometime soon. Keep up the good work my friend
Thanks, hope you have a chance to eat it, it's really good and refreshing!
At 2:05 the angry look on the man's face '10 ka chaar, kabse' 😆
My family is Chinese but my parents were born in India and I looooove when they make this at home. It's so good :)
That lady at 02:28 says,"Aloo zyada dena bhaiyya haan, nahi toh mirchi lagega.(Put more potato otherwise it will be hot)" :D
Best laugh I had in days. :D
+Vivek Payasi what was funny about that?
hahahahah it was funny
haha yeah ppl always have to give 1000 instrutions to pani puri wala ..
+Ismail Khan I laughed when I saw your comment "hahaha it was funny"
shailendra bhai
Hi Choi, yes especially off the street, it's not the safest thing to eat, so I didn't eat it too often, but it's just soo cool looking and fun to eat (besides tasting too). They also serve pani puri at some indoor restaurants where conditions are much cleaner and where they say they use filtered water.
kaisa diya?
Das ka chaar!
kabse???
ha ha
he was shocked as if its a petrol price hike.
das ka chaar is standard price, but if ure too lalchi the golgappa wala will give u 1 free khaali puri
+dontusehername

empty puri bro
dis nikka is wining for 18 cents
ikr lol
Yes, I agree, it's really entertaining too!
LOL the guy at the end just killed me. He was arguing with the vender why he's selling the puris at 4 for 10R. Omg im traveling to India in 2 day, and I don't care how much they are! iv waited 9 years to taste these !!
Btw LOVE the videos Mark! :)
Hey Eliwen, thanks for sharing, I didn't know what exactly he was saying! 6 would have been a great deal!
Yum! I miss that. It's so good. Have you tried the apple samosas yet? I dont know if you can find them in Kolkata but if you're in Rishikesh, you have to try them. Miss India xox
Apple Samosa?
Yes I fully agree, thank you!
Funniest part of the video was the guy at the end haggling over the price :)
aditya menon and mark had no idea what was going on
Foreigner dekha nhi ki 10 rupay m 10 piece fuchka ka vao 10 m 4 kar diya😂😂 aisa maine v ekbar dhara tha fuchka wale ko😂
Yup, that's just they way this snack is served. He is really good at it!
The guy with glasses is bargaining!...The vendor says '4 for 10 rupees' and and the guy says 'no... dont want 4 for 10'...and the vendor says ' I will give you 5 for 10' and the guy says what abt 6 for 10 rupees and the vendor says (2:13)..no..that wont do....Fun to watch him bargaining for golgappa!!!
lol
Yes I want just about to comment about that saying you have just witnessed some good ol indian bargaining!
I'm a student living in the same city, and trust me you ain't having a proper puchka if you don't bargain. It's one of those quaint traditions that go with buying this food.lol.
Saajan John this happens only in india
He said right bro. Here i get 7 for 10 rupees
Yes, it's a great food sound!
I'm highly concern about the sanitation mark, I love your videos, they shouldn't be barehanded when they gave you the foods . So unclean. Stay healthy and make more videos mark . Thankyou for your sharing...
Bro
We are humans and don't you think humans kiss pets?
this is street food . of course it can't be clean
You guys have shitty immune systems.
+John Nguyen ..That's how you build strong immune system.
Tony Stank why don't u try it out to see what happen?
Yes, there are some really skilled street food vendors, they do things so fast!
imagine him having 20 customer at the same time. I think i'll fail as a pani puri vendor..i'll lost count. lol
***** that's not very nice.
Hello!!He has a backup guy behind him...did u not hear the backup guy speak when the tamil guy tried to bargain..haha
tenzin lhagyal thanks for pointing that out. i thought it was just the customers around him talking. :D
tenzin lhagyal you think everyone in this world understands tamil? Lol
Great, thank you very much for watching!
I like your videos
next time when you visit India come to lucknow. Delicious foods waiting for you.. with different taste.

Nafeesa Esat Exactly, there's no doubt.
Nafeesa Esat .....😇
Hi, not sure yet, but I hope to visit in the future. Are you from Vietnam? What part?
I'm from Bangladesh but completely westernized. My stomach could not take ill-handled food. He's so lucky he can because he can enjoy everything without getting sick.
+bs4e Amen to that brother, my greatparents are from India, but I cant eat streetfood.
ecxactly same thing happens to me
+bs4e gosh i just thinking the same thought the steel made stomach !!, indeed he's the lucky one
bs4e its more like tomader pet a dom nei...hojom korar
Lord Hell Yeah Hacker, yes. Thik bolle
Loved this video due to the sheer glee on your face as the pani puris just kept coming :-) I've been dreaming of pani puri/golgappa since visiting India in 2008. Had it on the streets of Delhi where the vendor had two different vats of water; one flavored with loads of cooling mint, garlic and minced green chilis, the other had cilantro/coriander, cucumber and red chili. Both were amazing...
When I went to India I had pani puri it's so good. It's sweet and spicy at the same time. Me and my brother went to the street vendor to eat it but my parents went to restaurant for it. I threw up after couple of hours and it was my fault. While at the airport waiting for the flight I drank Bru coffee and while on the flight to kerala I had mango fruiti. Let me tell you those 3 don't mix especially coffee and Mango drink. On the good note it cleaned out my system and I have ready to have traditional kerala breakfast when I got home.
Lovely story
Hey, very cool, glad you love to cook and eat food from around the world too!
Your immune system must be pretty strong after so many street food. People like me get diarrhea after eating at McDonald's in Hong Kong! Yeah, no kidding.
thats because mcdonald doesn't serve real food :P
canuck21 only tourist get diarhia, the people that where born their and eat these kind of stuff they dont get diarhia
Thanks a lot Daysof, glad you enjoyed it, many more India videos to come!
I like Pani Puri....
Me2
Cool to hear that, hope you can visit India someday!
Pani puri😍😍😍
I appreciate it Adam, thank you for watching!
people here commenting''is it healthy to drink water in india?? i was told not to drink water in india'' acting as though they fucking grew up as a goddamn princess in their country...such questions piss me off...guess what we are humans too we too get sick if the water is unhealthy so stop judging MOFO's
People get sick if they're not used to the water also?
I'm an NRI, even when I drink India water I get sick.
It doesn't suit them. They aren't judging. Chill.
*****
hey mineral water is the same everywhere in the world...so that theory of water doesn't suit is BS.. find a place where panipuris are served using mineral water .no big deal...
Uhm where are you settled? I mean which country do you live in?
hahahahahah that's real, i grew up like a goddamn princess in my country xD even clean food makes me sick sometimes so.... what the hell ! :D let's eat whatever i can, #YOLO

begger nepali
Yes, an expression of delicious.
Oh .. ROund 2 ... oh Round 3 .. lolz
Ha, sick from watching this food? Thanks a lot for watching!
Watur? Watur watur... Haha
Hey Tom, I do understand what you're saying. No, it's definitely not always the safest to eat street snacks, but at the same time, anyone could really get sick from anything - even at a nice restaurant.
Eating these food is like mountain climbing, you will get to taste these exotic flavors, but might die or get hurt in the process lol.
I tried this same thing and it tasted out of this world! specially for the price its dirt cheap (pun intended)
but this one time the guy literally sneezed on my food, and i still ate it because i didnt wana disrespect lol, pretty stupid from my side.
***** hahahahaahahahahahahahahaha lol
LOLOL
+moon ar LMAO! thats a big no! XD
Yes, so do I!
4 of 10 rupees?????? Here in hyderabad it is 8 of 10 uknow.
I have had Pani Puris at Hyderabad and other parts of India. They are nothing compared to the ones in Kolkata. The Pani Puris I had in Hyderabad are hard and filled with unwanted things, like too much chutney. While in Kolkata every vendor serves well proportioned pani puris.
+AVISHEK DAN thank you,finally someone said it.😂😅
Triple H here in mumbai it's 6 for 30.
Many thanks!
Did you get sick from the water. Thats the only thing that would worry me.
Your 9 friends in Vancouver CANADA just watched this (Sunday is one of the days we all work TOGETHER) and wanted to say hello!!! Fabulous video, want to try this!!
Lol y do u do the accent??
Hey thanks for watching. I'm not sure exactly what you mean?
sab toh india main muh se atithi devo bhava he bolte hai....lekin kuch bharwe dukandaar India ka naam dubane main lage rehte hai....sach main sharm aati hai esi vdo's ko dekh kr...kyuki bahar k log v samajhte hai....or hindi language nahi samajh ne wala v cmnts pardh kr samajh he jayega....😐
Kolkatta poni puri wow very nice preparation very good exellent tastey food
Good videos mark. But u dont need to put on an indian accent wen speaking english pmsl😂
It happens to me too when I travel. It's not about being pretentious. Sometimes people understand you better when you speak in an accent similar to theirs.
Revina Que agreed. I end up doing the same thing, tbh.
Yes Michiko, exactly!
why did Mark do the Indian accent?lol
beacuse it naturally comes when you are in another country talking to the people...it kind of flows naturally and it also helps to relate with the people.
BECAUSE HES RACIST naww jk idk
Nobody ever got sick eating puchka's .... go ahead Mark.. and it's most awesome snacks ever...
to be honest I would be scared to eat that...
only in India's best mouth watering food😋😋👍💯😍
He serves and dips his hand in food and serve you
With same hands he wipes his sweat from face , india is too hot climate
With his hands he also scratch his butt also
enjoy..............................!
john jase Thats what makes it tastier. Try some dude.
Not to mention handling money and food. Paper currency notes are one of the most commonly exchanged objects and its potential to transmit pathogenic organisms has been well recognized.
Yes, it is not hygienic at all but it's a misconception that India has a hot climate. It's difficult to generalise India's climate due to vast geographic scale and varied topography.
Tony Stank : it's unhygienic , moreover these shops are not for tourists like u , it's for the poor people whose avg income per day is $1. if u are so concerned , ask him to go to big shops selling Pani Puri , who sell it for $1 , whereas this s available for $.18
yes its unhygenic.. but you-ll find so many street food places which are hygienic but a bit more expensive.. but the taste differs..
Thanks a lot Maria, will do!
we are told not to eat this because of the water.
Who gives a damn, you get life once enjoy it instead of keeping thousand rules you get 1 life so make the most out of it without putting restrictions on your life.
I went to India and initially was VERY ill from the food and water...
Another traveller gave me some Acidophilus Capsules - this is a wide spectrum probiotic....(Health food shops sell them - like Holland and Barrett.)
After taking one or 2 of these each day I was ok.
In the same year I went back and was not ill once but it was ONLY as I had these tablets.
If you want to know how they work - the science is well known - google it.
Put probiotic in wikipedia.
Élie Metchnikoff was a Nobel prize winner in medicine who did the pioneering research in this area.
I live in Los Angeles, I got to try Pani puri from a local Indian market. It taste like potato chip mashed potato and a more tart version of Tajin seasoning put together. I wanted to try yogurt but they said they didn't recommend it.
Yeah, I live in India and I avoid this particular dish as well. Mainly because it's soooo darn easy to make it at home with proper water and under hygienic conditions.
This particular dish is something you can avoid if you ever visit India. Street vendors these days are lousy and use unfiltered water for it, not to mention they dip their hands in the pot to fill the snack.
But having said that, if you make it at home, or try it out at a decent hygienic restaurant you'll just get a taste explosion in your mouth! :)
Also the one with yogurt is insanely delicious, only and idiot restaurateur would suggest against trying it. All it contains is finely chopped onions, tomatoes, boiled and chopped potatoes, some Indian sauces, yogurt and spices and topped off with cilantro. Tastes delicious!
It's worth trying at least once, and what's the worse that can happen?
Yeah, the the dish itself is pretty crunchy & tangy. Although has to be prepared hygienically! :)
Wowzers! I adore india food, music... Ect... NEVER have I seem this snack!! Thanks mark!!! Glade you did not get ill ( sick ) I bet the streets of India food venders music smeal Devine ! & As usual high HD !!! Little jealous ... But so happy to see such " diversty " in food you always seem to show something "unique"
this puchka guy made you fool. he usually sells at 5 for 10 INR :P
No one can resist this....... I still remember when I used to come home from school I used to have pani puri almost everyday....
How can u eat that food mark!? the guy is touching money and the food too :/
Ruby Cardona because he has a very strong stomach just like all the other people that live there, they dont get diarhia or stomach pain.
we r immune about that ....
thats why india is strong in immune system keeping memory immune cells
I'm going to Delhi in March - would love to try all this street food, but yeah touching the money and then the food....hmmmm. Some web sites say plenty of people visiting get sick. :-P
He is amazing he ate everything without complaining so he is my fav
hahaa why do you always have such a fake accent ?
Cheryl Chan he tried to adapt with the people
Mouthwatering video.
Sorry Mark, but what's with the patronizing fake Indian accent?
He just does it because its easier for the other to understand because thats how they would hear english being spoken in their country, they can't understand greatly when we talk like fast english with no accent. He's not being disrespectful, its something that even i have to do sometimes as well.
Rox Wilson I think it's just natural lol
you made me hungry! that crunch.... yummmm!
Indians and Pakistanis are always bargaining for everything even if they're well off , it's so annoying
bhaiya aloo zyada daalna lol
+ce0113
why do involve religion?
unfair!
grow up!
+ce0113
