Pani Puri (Puchka) in Kolkata - One of The BEST Indian Street Food Snacks!

  • Pani puri, also called puchka in Kolkata, is one of the best Indian street food snacks. I loved snacking on them when I was in Kolkata, India.
    There are few Indian street foods more intriguing, tempting, and as popular as something known as pani puri. In Kolkata, they are known as puchka and in other parts of India they are referred to as golgappa, but they are all quite similar, and the most common name is just pani puri. These snacks are widely available in India, Pakistan, and Nepal. Puri is the world for a deep fried piece of dough, which in this case is a little hollow ball about the size of a golf ball. It's crispy like a chip. Pani is the Hindi word for water, so both together make up chips and water.
    Pani puri is available all over India, but in this Indian street food video, I'm on the streets of Kolkata for my first taste of a pani puri. As soon as I rolled up, the vendor first handed me a small bowl that was made from a leaf. The bowl was tiny, only able to hold a single pani puri at a single time. It was time to begin round one. The vendor began by grabbing a puri from his big stockpile, an entire tower of puris, and he then poked a hole in it with his thumb. He then added some masala spiced potatoes, a few spices and finally dipped into a bucket of water. Now it's not just plain water that fills the puris, in this case it was tamarind infused water including extra spices, onions, and cilantro. So after the pani puri (puchka) was completely assembled, the vendor then handed it to me by placing it in the small leaf bowl. Huddled around the vendor, I grabbed the puri, and plopped the entire combination of ingredients into my mouth in a single bite. You have to take a single bite, of the ingredients will all spill out. What greeted my mouth was an extremely delicious burst of crunchy was transformed into a flavorful gush of the spicy tamarind water. It was a culinary sensation like I'd never had before, a contrast of flavors and textures that really went well together. As soon as I had chewed down my first pani puri, the vendor was immediately ready with another fresh one, and placed it into my bowl again. It's important to eat pani puri one at a time so they don't get soggy from the water. I ate a round of five, though I wanted to stand there indefinitely and eat more and more.
    I mentioned above, pani puri is a favorite Indian street food, and it's available all over the country. There are a number of different variations and alterations of the snack, but the ones in Kolkata are normally filled with tamarind water that's salty and sour. If you are in Kolkata, be sure to take a wander around the New Market where you'll find all kinds of chaotic action including a ton of delicious street food.

    The Indian guy who was bargaining at the end said the right thing. I lived in Kolkata during that time and everywhere the cost of Golgappas were 6 for 10Rs. When he asked to the seller why 4 for 10rs then the seller replied I will give you 5 for 10Rs. If he could have wait another five minutes until that American guy leaves he might get 6 Golgappas for 10Rs. It is very clear that we Indians charge extra money from the westerner.

      +Gourav Das They do that everywhere. People make some extra cash off of foreigners because the foreigners don't know much better and are happy to pay whatever. I myself don't mind if people overcharge me overseas as long as it's still reasonably priced, imo

    Hi Choi, yes especially off the street, it's not the safest thing to eat, so I didn't eat it too often, but it's just soo cool looking and fun to eat (besides tasting too). They also serve pani puri at some indoor restaurants where conditions are much cleaner and where they say they use filtered water.

    Loved this video due to the sheer glee on your face as the pani puris just kept coming :-) I've been dreaming of pani puri/golgappa since visiting India in 2008. Had it on the streets of Delhi where the vendor had two different vats of water; one flavored with loads of cooling mint, garlic and minced green chilis, the other had cilantro/coriander, cucumber and red chili. Both were amazing...

    When I went to India I had pani puri it's so good. It's sweet and spicy at the same time. Me and my brother went to the street vendor to eat it but my parents went to restaurant for it. I threw up after couple of hours and it was my fault. While at the airport waiting for the flight I drank Bru coffee and while on the flight to kerala I had mango fruiti. Let me tell you those 3 don't mix especially coffee and Mango drink. On the good note it cleaned out my system and I have ready to have traditional kerala breakfast when I got home.

      beacuse it naturally comes when you are in another country talking to the people...it kind of flows naturally and it also helps to relate with the people.

      Yes, it is not hygienic at all but it's a misconception that India has a hot climate. It's difficult to generalise India's climate due to vast geographic scale and varied topography.

      Tony Stank : it's unhygienic , moreover these shops are not for tourists like u , it's for the poor people whose avg income per day is $1. if u are so concerned , ask him to go to big shops selling Pani Puri , who sell it for $1 , whereas this s available for $.18

    • @N0THiNG6

      yes its unhygenic.. but you-ll find so many street food places which are hygienic but a bit more expensive.. but the taste differs..

      I went to India and initially was VERY ill from the food and water...
      Another traveller gave me some Acidophilus Capsules - this is a wide spectrum probiotic....(Health food shops sell them - like Holland and Barrett.)
      After taking one or 2 of these each day I was ok.
      In the same year I went back and was not ill once but it was ONLY as I had these tablets.
      If you want to know how they work - the science is well known - google it.
      Put probiotic in wikipedia.
      Élie Metchnikoff was a Nobel prize winner in medicine who did the pioneering research in this area.

      I live in Los Angeles, I got to try Pani puri from a local Indian market. It taste like potato chip mashed potato and a more tart version of Tajin seasoning put together. I wanted to try yogurt but they said they didn't recommend it.

    • @BlackMambo5
      @BlackMambo5 10 лет назад

      Yeah, I live in India and I avoid this particular dish as well. Mainly because it's soooo darn easy to make it at home with proper water and under hygienic conditions.
      This particular dish is something you can avoid if you ever visit India. Street vendors these days are lousy and use unfiltered water for it, not to mention they dip their hands in the pot to fill the snack.
      But having said that, if you make it at home, or try it out at a decent hygienic restaurant you'll just get a taste explosion in your mouth! :)
      Also the one with yogurt is insanely delicious, only and idiot restaurateur would suggest against trying it. All it contains is finely chopped onions, tomatoes, boiled and chopped potatoes, some Indian sauces, yogurt and spices and topped off with cilantro. Tastes delicious!
      It's worth trying at least once, and what's the worse that can happen?

    • @BlackMambo5
      @BlackMambo5 10 лет назад +1

      Yeah, the the dish itself is pretty crunchy & tangy. Although has to be prepared hygienically! :)

    • @glozellishot
      @glozellishot 9 лет назад +30

      He just does it because its easier for the other to understand because thats how they would hear english being spoken in their country, they can't understand greatly when we talk like fast english with no accent. He's not being disrespectful, its something that even i have to do sometimes as well.
