David Toma spoke at my high school in New Hampshire around 1983 or so. Powerful speaker: LOUD and foul-mouthed. Passionate. Pulled zero punches. What an incredible (and tragic) life he had.
David Toma came to our HS back in 1982 to tell us about the dangers of drugs. I can call my ex girlfriend right now and she will tell you because of him she NEVER DID DRUGS. His message was not in vain.
Literally, in the case of Baretta. Musante only agreed to do one season. Huggins and Cannell agreed, thinking that if it was a hit, he'd of course renew his contract. He didn't! So the basic "man of disguises" character hook was carried over and the show re-worked for Robert Blake. In the case of Garner and Rockford, that was more of a Maverick-style con man implementation.
My memory is that Al Pacino became a star from the first “Godfather” film and then starred in “Serpico”, which was based on a real-life NYC policeman. After that movie was also successful, this TV series was created, which had a similar backstory.
To Kelly Franklin:Series star Tony Musante quit the show after the 1st season as I recall. He didn't want to be typecast & doing a weekly series. Also he wanted to do appeances on other shows such as Police Story & Medical Story.ABC retooled it & it became Baretta which gave Robert Blake one of his better known roles & an Emmy for best lead actor in a dramatic series.
A great crime drama that stood out from other cop shows at the time (1973/74). Nick Nolte played a small part in ' *The Friends of Danny Beecher* ', as a friend of Danny Beecher who killed a cop that killed his girlfriend.
i loved this series..i think it was replaced by baretta...but this was the original's how' it was very very good i like tony as an actor teaming up with simon oakland...great show...sad when it was taken off....this was far more grittier than baretta

RIP, Tony Musante, RIP, Stephen J. Cannell
R.I.P. Susan Strasburg and Simon Oakland. He was Captain Spooner his boss.
Musante made a big mistake his carreer was obscure after series but a fine actor
I remember this coming on as very young child and was fascinated by the opening.
Yeah 830pm Tuesday's I was 9
Mike post and Pete carpenter were my favorite tv composers, they always had grit and substance to their music, they were the best!!
I never heard of this in my life. The music in this era was the best.

I wish this was available on dvd
My older sister introduced me to Toma, she liked Tony Musante and we both liked the hard driving theme song.
This theme by Carpenter and Post had a streetwise swagger their other themes lacked.
TOMA was the blueprint for both THE ROCKFORD FILES and BARETTA.

@@davidbunch7517 See my posting regarding why Tony Musante left the show after one season and how Baretta came into place.

While in Marine boot camp on PI I read about David Toma in Leatherneck magazine. Very tough individual indeed.
The 70's were cool
You're not wrong
Coolest decade ever, right down to the commercials.
Yep, 60’s were Westerns & 70’s were all crime dramas.
Totally agree, including the TV theme songs which are unparalleled
@@frankgualtieri7243 You ain’t never lied!

True artists. Thanks you guys. Too many tv shows owe to you.
My older sister always watched Toma, musta had a crush on Tony Musante, just like when Mom watches Michael Douglas on Streets of San Francisco.
This was broadcast when I was in 7th grade

I don’t recall this program, but I see it only aired for one season, which is probably why I don’t recall it.
Despite created by Edward Hume, it should've been made by Quinn Martin Productions.
TOMA excelente serie !!You have eopisodios these wonderful series ?? TOMA, Matt Helm and Joe Forrester ?? Big hug
As I recall, the star of this show left after only one or two seasons. I wonder what happened to him?
