Used to buy all my tweed from the P & M Boutique. And they go on about the death of the high street. More like the murder of the high Street by the city fathers.
That new court behind the reporter was opened by Princess Anne. The day before she opened it the police visited Paddy’s and told the traders don’t turn up tomorrow.
Loved paddy’s Market used to go their all the time you got some great stuff I remember one summer I went up and it was almost closing tome so people were packing stuff away and I seen a giant Christmas bauble bout size of a football and it had a crack in it so I asked how much it was and the stall holder said just take it it’s cracked and going in the bin so I took the bauble Home glued it and still got it to this day I got it back in the late 90s and it sat under my tree just their at Christmas comes out every year but online places like eBay has killed these wee market places
Was only there once as a pal talked about it as it was iconic we went in the car and had a lovely day out all the people were lovely i even found som,e old 70s records nothing but good memories .
Really sad times and the end of an era, really sad! Always very good fond memories of Paddy's Market and that of the Barras in it's hay day especially during the 80's & 90's when I was a wain and there was never a dull moment! It's the trader's and all the familiar friendly faces that made the experience unique and humbly warm especially every Saturday all the more worth while! A real sense of community right there and there still is ofcoarse but not quite like it was but! But the spirit is still there I tell you albeit which has been very badly let doon by both fiscal and civic bureaucratic red tape and bylaw pish nae thanx to the City Chambers and they shower of cliquey tight ersed arseholes fae Westmonster! 😔
Not one bit fare because the folk who only have a couple of pound to buy pair of shoes clothes etc etc Etc!! Very sad day indeed!! Terrible when you see places you love dearly and for just to shut it down is a disgrace to them people who would help each other out a good proper we community and it’s gone!!!! Poor People relayed on the market to feed their children and other stuff!!!! The government has plenty of money and they still closed it down!! God bless all the people who worked with the poor people back then
It was a scandal - instead of closing it the should have pumped a wee bit money into it - i dont mean make it all hoytey toytey but it was a great place that could easily been made even better - an opportunity missed - the council were happy enough to run their own paddys market ( Blochairn car boot sale) - where the jumped up council workers could slip on their yellow jackets and act like jobsworths while charging a small fortune while giving a poor service with bad attitude
Respect it's a shame great Britain needs places like that more than ever now

I am part of this history because me and my dad shared a stall down paddy's for quite some years during its hay days
I worked in bell st cleansing depot my beat was paddy's got to know lots of traders who were good people
Put it this way that's where the small trader's made money on a daily basis to put bread on the table

Ah, the well used tactic of creating a problem (or alleged problem) then providing a "solution" to it.
junkies ruined it stoating about like zombies amd grying to punt anything for a fix,,, shame it was always a good place to go,,,
always a good place to pick up a cheap goalkeeper.
A crime against Glasgow, and now the Barras is all but gone, sad times.

GDC carried out a 'cleansing' of the area - it's now being taken over by private landlords who demand expensive rents!
