Lloyd Robinson(Deceased). He's now being recognized as the 1st black American to play American college hockey. He enrolled at Boston University in 1946 after returning from military service in WWII.

Hockey is an upper middle class sport like lacrosse. It got exclusive once parents decided concussions and dental bills were to much to handle.
Three's millions of kids in farm towns and rural areas across North America who have no idea what you are talking about..
@@witness1013 100% not true, idk where you've been but the kids playing D1/NHL/etc. aren't coming from small towns w/house league teams.
I'm from the tri-state area (think the NYC suburbs in NY/NJ/CT) & I'm well-acquainted w/the costs of elite hockey. Take the Mid-Fairfield Rangers for an example. Perennial national champs, 2019 U15 team was coached by MARTIN ST. LOUIS, alumni include Trevor Zegras (2019 9th overall pick), Kevin Shattenkirk (2007 14th overall), Spencer Knight (2019 13th overall pick), Dom Fensore (2019 Hurricanes 3rd rounder, BU Defenseman), countless D1 & NTDP prospects, etc. (I could go on but suffice it to say this is a prospect FACTORY.)
Tuition per player right now is $7K+/season. That's excluding spring/summer hockey teams tuition, hockey camp tuition, equipment costs, fuel & travel costs, food & lodging costs for tournaments, cost of private coaching, etc. But to be fair let's say misc. costs of 50% or $3500 extra. In the spirit of simplicity, I'm rounding it to $11K/season.
Let's say a kid plays travel hockey from 6-16. He then makes the NTDP for his U17 season & his parents no longer incur any cost for him to play hockey for U17 & U18. We'll also assume he gets a full ride to college, so his parents don't have to incur any cost for him to play college hockey as well.
At a minimum you're looking at $11K (bare minimum) x 10 seasons or $110K for one kid. And it's probably closer to $20K/year when it's all said and done. I'm not even including the cost of possibly attending a prep school or hockey academy like McDavid or Marner, I'm just using the cost of travel teams. In reality, McDavid & Marner's parents spent closer to $30K/year to support their kid's dreams.
Bottom line is elite competitive hockey is fast becoming a sport exclusively for the kids of well-heeled parents.
Kids can enjoy the sport & play house league or even A-level travel hockey for much less no doubt, but high level hockey is an absurd financial commitment today.
@@witness1013 And almost none of them will even reach the college level and play at any kind of national level. Local pick up games and kid's playing in third generation equipment will never get past that point in today's setup.
In a similar vein, I can afford to bring my kid to the local 9-hole golf course and play for fun, but I will never be able to afford the lessons and club memberships to give him a chance at any elite level of the sport.
…every sport on this planet started with working class domination (non-working class were not as physically active so they would not win races (they rode horses once a week; the stable man had a better relationship with horse (& hence was a better rider).
Modern sports drain Financial resources of every level of society/most of the people who play all these leagues are not becoming professional hockey players (but they pay all those fees; making organizations rich).
