I used to love trawling the short wave bands way back in the 60's and 70's,listening to all the exotic shorrt wave transmissions....Radio Nederland was one of my favourites.RIP the Bonaire relay SK.......
This appeared in my recommended viewing list just this evening - 02 Jan 2022. As a teenaged SWL in the 70s, Radio Nederland broadcasting from Bonaire to the Southwest Pacific on 9715 kHz at 0700-0800 UTC was my favourite station - I listened to it most days. It's sad to see the SW stations disappearing over the years. Australia did similar when it started to wind back Radio Australia in 1996. The federal government sold off the Cox Peninsula station in the Northern Territory, relegating RA to another ionospheric hop away from the rest of the world by forcing it to use stations further south. Then in the 2010s, the ultimate irony: the then-Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, complained publicly about the government of China jamming RA's broadcasts to Asia - despite him being a member of that very government in 1996 which took the razor to RA's assets in the north of Australia, thus greatly diminishing RA's effectiveness in Asia.
Since it's opening, on a Heathkit and later a Hallicrafters S-85, I listened to RN almost on a daily basis from Bonaire. It was sad to find this video. But, if any of the station employees, and personalities in Hilversum are reading this, I say Thanks. You, and so many others in the industry gave me an education no school could provide back then. Not to mention a lot of entertainment in the form of Tom Meyers on "Happy Station". I wish you all the best.
I remember listening to The Happy Station on the 49Mtr Band, back in the 1960's, every Sunday morning, have still got a QSL card from them stored away somewhere !! many pleasant hours spent SWL'ing around the bands !!
That seems to be a shame to dismantle such a station...The only decline in short wave is from those that think it's in decline...Although I've been using PC's since 1991, I've no interest in going to a web page to listen to a radio broadcast...The only digital I want to hear is from the 660 portable radio...I don't care to leave a digital foot print of my interests for all to see, but rather sit back and tune one of the anolog or digital SW radios I have...Sad... 73's
Yes I agree. It's a shame RNW didn't further embrace Digital Radio Mondiale via SW. It provides much better quality over existing AM bands provided you get the technical parameters right for transmission.
This sucks, all the great shortwave broadcasters going away. If there's a natural disaster or political event that brings down electricity and/or the Internet over a large area, we're still going to need actual radio stations we can tune in on battery-powered radios so we can still hear from the rest of the world.
Dont know if anyone cares but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all the new movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf during the lockdown xD

Beautiful times and beautiful days
It is a shame that they couldn't start broadcasting on digital radio in Europe at least.
That is what BBC World Service have done.
