    I've started dipping my toe into Precision Rifle. After 30 years of national Match shooting and what I've spent on Garands and M1a's $1500-$2000 for a competitive rifle isn't all that bad IMHO. Currently I'm shooting a Savage 12FV in 6.5 Creedmoor I bought used with a 6x24x50 Vortex Diamondback Tactical scope and with my handloads it's producing some very tight groups. At 100 yards my best 5 shot groups with 120gr OTM's are in the 3/8" range and ringing 6 and 8" steel out to 600 yards is a breeze with 130 ELDm's . Maybe next year I'll be stepping up to a Bergara B14 Heavy Barrel or for a few bucks more a Savage or Ruger precision rifle. Here comes that rabbit hole again.

    Great video. My son picked up a Ruger Precision from a friend ol mine that had a $6,000 custom 308 built for PRS.He sold my son the rifle for $750. Plus he had a Timney trigger in it.Shoots great . MY 1st long range rifle was a 6.5 Creedmoor Remington 700 PCR.. It shoots great but it really needs a trigger upgrade. I lost the screw trying to adjust it even lower.I ordered a Timney . My.
    .My Bergara Premier Pro 6.5PRC has an 8oz and 300 PRC has an 8 Oz & shoots great.

    I did hit like. I did hit subscribe.
    I found your channel because of your scope reviews and I am glad to see that you have a series on the whole thing, the whole aspect. Definitely choose wisely for intended use. I was watching a video from Epic Outdoors and they went to a precision rifle maker called Red Rock Precision. On average, the rifle can cost $8k. Then a choice of Night Force, Swarovsky, or whatever you want. The whole rig could total 10k. But what you get is a rifle that will shoot 1 inch pattern at 1,000 yards and that is not a misprint. They have their own range. You order the rifle. You go there to try it out and get it set up just for you. Then, if satisfied, you pay for it, go back home and it will be shipped to the FFL you choose for transfer in your state. What is the use of that?
    These rifles are designed for long range big game hunting. Elk and moose are elusive. You don't get to get too close, sometimes. In the western part of my state are some public hunting lands where the literature mentions that you can expect to make at least a 200 yard shot, or more. As opposed to the eastern part of the state full of woods and bushes and you might shoot as far as 50 yards. But if that rifle does what you want, it might be the only rifle you will ever need. A lifetime of hunting pays for itself.
    But I like how this is geared to long range target shooting, from which I think we can all benefit. Aim small, miss small.
    Knowing what I know now, one can get into some long for not a lot. If you buy a budget rifle, do no regret putting it in a chassis. The plastic scope cost pennies. Just about all of what you paid was for action and barrel. So, even though I have other expensive heavy rifles, I have put my Mossberg Patriot .308 Win into an MDT chassis, SCS buttstock, and the carbine to carbine folding adapter. That is so that I can fold the rifle for assorted reasons but also that I do not have move the cheek rig to take the bolt out for cleaning. It is starting to gain weight. The chassis has some weight, the Vortex Venom scope is about 1.5 pounds. But I think I am still under 10 pounds, which makes it my lightest rifle.

    Maybe a video on tuner/brakes ; I just installed a Harrel's tuner/brake on my 223 Rem 700 and my best groups @ 100 yds. have been reduced from 5/8" to 3/8"
    In Canada there is one manufacturer in Quebec that makes a tuner but it's very large and cumbersome. There use to be one in Mississauga but their web page is inactive so you're going to need USA tuner/brakes. I pick my Harrel's up in Port Huron cheap , $145.00 each.
    If you're going to do one and need a Harrel's tuner/brake let me know as I have extra one's and can ship one to you. There are the EC tuner/brakes and insite has a tuner , the brake is extra.

    I love a smooth mil spec trigger cleaned and pollished. Lighter triggers make me feel unsafe. I like a little creep then hit a 4-5 lb wall. Makes it feel much more predictable where as lighter triggers are more likely to fire when im not quite ready for it to. Though I do have fat rough desensitized construction hands.

    i have read and researched and planned for my next rifle build and I keep coming back to one question . that is, I want a heavy barrel from a reliable manufacturer for stiffness and consistency I will prolly do a 6.8 Wester , 280 AI, 7 prc, 6mm-284, or 22-250AI. Length??? 24 before can or break to 26 before can or break. Longer however has more whip and flex. Should I consider 22". Don't care about weight, I do want a full burn but I probably wont load to max cap.😅

    .270 Winchester. Berger 170gr Elite hunter @2920 fps muzzle. G1 BC: .662
    Show me a .308 or 6.5 creed load that can even come close to competing with that. .270 win was developed in 1923. Everybody flocks to the "new thing" and says it's the best when in reality new cartridges are immeasurably different in terms of performance since 1906 (30-06). I would say the last notable breakthrough was the .308 family just because it allowed for a shorter action. Everything after that is usually 90% hype. Chew me out but these are my beliefs

    • @EpikArms
      @EpikArms  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Tashannon. Yeah i started shooting 12 years ago, so respectively new. While many have comolaint about "the new thing" often marketting and getting these new thing restimulates the industry. Tou could arguably say the same of the auto industry from old sports cars to new. Regarding the 270 correct me if I'm wrong but I dont believe it has as many bullet selections and weight as either the 6.5 or .308.

    • @EpikArms
      @EpikArms  Год назад

      Thanks Randy I appreciate hearing that, that was my goal with this series, I pretty much made it for the "me" of when I got into shooting. Bergara HMR is excellent, the wilderness is a longer barrel, now .308 as a first caliber i think its nto an ideal option anymore especially for a first rifle, it has more recoil and doesn't perform nearly as well for long range even with equivalently good quality ammunition, also match amunition in either caliber is about as expensive as one another, cheap ammunition on the other hand for huntin is going to be a bit cheaper in .308

    • @NortheastSurvival911
      @NortheastSurvival911 Год назад

      The fella in this video gave an excellent response. I'm going to disagree with the caliber being a bad first rifle cartridge.
      Although it definitely will help to start with something considerably smaller it just to get a feel for what it's like to shoot at those distances and get a better understanding of what gravity and humidity and even the slightest breeze can do to a bullet... If you want to start with a 308 then start with a 308.
      But yeah you can expect some pretty substantial recoil immediately. That's a decent size cartridge. I mean it's big enough to drop anything that walks in North America with one well-placed shot.
      But if it's something that you have even a remote passion for... The 308 is an excellent cartridge for distance.
      I personally prefer the 30-06. Ballistically speaking they are somewhat close however... I do a lot of custom loading... And there's more wiggle room with a 30 ought 6 cartridge than there is a 308. But they are both excellent long-distance cartridges that will quite literally drop whatever you shoot with one well-placed shot.
      The 308 can handle a thousand yards very very easily.

The Ruger in 6.5 creed 8s shown on RUclips as accurate out the box up to 1 mile by novice shooters. Do you have any insight on the Ruger American predator dropped into a precision mdt chassis with a decent super sniper scope for a total build of 1500 vs buying a Ruger presion gen 3 or a savage precision 2.

      The scope is extra
      I’d go with a vortex diamondback 3- 9 x 40 about $usd 400..

    Well done. IMHO you pretty much get what you pay for. Most important aspect is accuracy by far so you should look for features like "shoots MOA, or sub MOA", etc. So the quality of the chambering job is critical - like you said if the throat is too long, then the bullet is forced to jump too far and accuracy is terrible. Otherwise you are just throwing money away and the frustration level will be in the ozone. Ruger, Winchester, and Browning are trusted brands that make excellent (accurate) rifles within the price point you mention. If you can afford custom but still have a budget, look at Fierce (made in Canada), Shaw, Alamo - there are a few others. Beyond that you in the "above $5k" category.

      Personally i love tikkas their actions are fam amazing and you wont be dissapointed in the least. Now comparing it to the savage 110 precision (i havent reviewed the elite) i would likely go with the tikka and chassis it up. Much smoother action, 70°bolt throw (as opposed to the savages 90°) i think you will be happier with the tikka. Imo

I do love the tikka action but having one already put together (in the savage with a $1,000 chassis, $100 muzzle device and $80 mag) for $1,800 seems like a pretty great deal. Plus the savage has more easy to swap barrels for if/when I shoot it out. I’ve been trying to find a tikka heavy barrel used but have been unlucky so far. Just getting the itch to buy the thing already but at the same point I want to make sure I get the right one for me. hey the Hardie way, take for example my custom rifle in 6mm creed, it weighs unloaded 20lbs and has a muzzle break the its not su much about recoil reduction as you mentioned there is rather little of that. but for follow up shots if you are doing PRS/ or shooting of barricades tank traps, it greatly helps your optic stay on target to see your misses and its faster to get a second shot on target

      I'm going to add my two cents here and say that it boils down to personal preference.
      If you set your rifle up properly with a muzzle brake and a few other items... You can reduce the muzzle flip. And you can take some of that recoil away.
      Believe me I know all about what women are capable of. I've got five girls between the ages of eight and 21 years old. My five daughters they all shoot. My youngest two are eight and nine and they just started. My oldest three handle my thirty-ought-six better than I do. They can stand and shoot it like it's nothing.
      My setup is a very old Savage model 111. Both action with the side button magazine release.
      Four in the magazine One in the chamber.
      I have a sling a somewhat large scope and a bipod on it. Absolutely nothing else. It's relatively heavy for its size. But my oldest three girls.. seventeen, nineteen and Twenty-One years-old... Like I said they handle it better than I do. 🤷

In other words he does not know that he does not know. He would be smart to attend an M1 Clinic hosted by an affiliate of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, or sign-up for the USAMU's Small Arms Firing School, a 3 day annual Marksmanship development event hosted by the CMP at Camp Perry, Oh at the end of July. These formal Marksmanship Instruction venues will get all beginners off to a great start in high power rifle Marksmanship, since the proven instruction is indeed delivered by highly qualified instructors. • @NortheastSurvival911
      @NortheastSurvival911 Год назад

      Exactly. If it's got a smoothbore it's a shotgun. If anyone says they've got a smooth bore rifle and it actually is a rifle... I would say that they probably have quite a few issues at that point. I've never in my life seen the rifling shot out of any rifle or pistol for that matter.
      On another note... With practice... You can lob a 12-gauge 1-oz slug out of a smoothbore barrel through a half inch of plywood at five hundred yards.
      Possibly further than that I don't know the maximum range that I've ever had with a shotgun at any given time as five hundred or so yards. And it takes some practice. It really does.
      My five hundred or so yards shot was done with a Mossberg 500 with an 18-point 5 inch barrel. All synthetic. Ar-style pistol grip with adjustable stock.
      Not a whole lot of accuracy at those distances though. This piece of plywood was I think eight by eight or it was a text for but there was two of them side-by-side. And it took quite a few shots to actually hit the damn thing.

      Everybody's going to have their opinions and their preferences.
      I seen videos with these uppity douchebags that will not shoot a rifle that doesn't cost at least $2,500. You take something like the Savage I have and put it in their hands and they bitched and complain the entire time and they can't hit shit with it and of course they blame the rifle.
      And by no means am I making reference to the gentleman in this video.
      Personal preference goes a long long way. Unfortunately in this modern day and age it's a bit expensive to just go out there and buy all kinds of rifles looking for the best one and you're not going to have any kind of an indoor range and most outdoor ranges even don't have long-distance target-shooting available that goes beyond a few hundred yards.
      And most of the places that have outdoor ranges do not have any Firearms available to rent.
      Anyone that gets into rifle shooting... I tell everybody the same thing.. get the rifle that you can afford. If you start out with something that stupid expensive and then realize you're just no good at it or you don't like it well that's an awfully costly mistake and you're not going to get what you just paid for that rifle even if you bring it back the next day.
      But anyway... As I mentioned.. everybody has their personal preferences.

  • @NortheastSurvival911
    @NortheastSurvival911 Год назад

    You definitely don't have to go out and spend thousands of dollars on some high-end rifle. I mean if you want to and you can afford it go ahead. There's definitely some advantages with a high-quality rifle...
    ... But if you're not practicing or really any good at all at long range shooting the rifle really isn't going to matter.
    I've been using a twenty-five-year-old Savage bolt action model 111 thirty-ought-six for I don't know probably twenty-five or so years with over 90% of my long-range shooting unless a long-range I'm talking over a thousand yards.
    It's far from being a high-end rifle but it is damn good quality. All I really needed was a better scope so I could actually see things at those distances.
    I spent just under $400 on the scope that I currently have on it. And it works perfectly.
    Learn how to use the graduations... Aka the little emael dots or the lines that you see on a lot of Scopes. If you don't have them on your scope... Well at some point I would recommend getting a scope that has them so you can increase your accuracy. Believe me it definitely helps once you figure out how to use them properly.
    This was an excellent follow-up video. Keep up the good work. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🫡
