Don't ever jump in to save someone. Most times you will be taken down by the panicking person using you as their own personal flotation device. I taught scuba and we learned really quick how a panicking person can take down a great strong swimmer. Best to try and find something to throw to them or if you go in, bring something for them to hold onto by pushing it towards them. They really should have life saver rings posted around the lake.

He cramped up, panicked, then caught a second cramp in his right or left leg, really started to become overwhelmed by his own body weight, his heart now beating so fast that it finally gave up on him. All the while in a matter of seconds he took in so much water, lungs nearly full of water, only added more weight to his already heavy body. Being fully clothed and more than likely starving from malnutrition anyway didn't give him much of a fighting chance. And the use of chronic achohol and drugs didn't help either. RIP Old Friend
If there’s nothing around they can toss to that man, he’ll drown anyone who goes to help him. You can only help if you’re able to reach them from behind. If they see you coming they’ll grab onto you and try to use you so they won’t drown, causing you to drown.
No one goes in that filthy water unless they are on drugs. It’s hard to see the outcome because he could have drowned the person who was trying to rescue him.
But they said he was swimming confidently. I’m under the assumption that there are no flotation devices around. You shouldn’t swim out to someone without a flotation device who is actively drowning. They would just grab onto you and you’ll end up drowning. If you can reach the person from behind, sure... but if they see you coming, you’ll have two victims. Most people are irrational because of fear when they’re drowning. They won’t know that they’re killing you in the process of trying to stay afloat.
Just one mans opinion, but a fountain like that... Which looks more like a lake, should have safety aperaticises .. At the very least, life donuts to throw to people in peril.
