  • After 10 days in space, Dragon and Axiom Space’s Ax-2 astronauts Peggy Whitson, John Shoffner, Ali Alqarni, and Rayyanah Barnawi, returned to Earth, splashing down off the coast of Florida at 11:04 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 30.
    Falcon 9 launched Dragon and the Ax-2 crew to the orbiting laboratory on Sunday, May 21 at 5:37 p.m. ET from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Ax-2 was Axiom Space’s second private astronaut mission to the International Space Station, and the second of four missions SpaceX will launch to the space station on behalf of Axiom Space via SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Dragon vehicles.

    It gets so routine now that we have to remind ourselves that every single mission without a failure is an extremely impressive feat. The precision needed, the tech, all these countless heads and hands working together here, that just shows what we are capable of when we pull ourselves together.

    Why did commentator continually talk about hyperbolic fumes???

    • @plebcrabslayer
      @plebcrabslayer Год назад +10

      Hypergolic means, typically of rocket propellant, that it ignites spontaneously with another such substance. Usually, and especially in the case of Dragon's use of MMH (monomethylhydrazine), these compounds are extremely poisonous. Because the propulsion nozzles on Dragon open into the atmosphere (since they open into space when in space), residue is very likely around those nozzles when the capsule is newly returned and bobbing in the ocean. In order to avoid contact between these residue fumes and any crew, a thorough check to ensure their absence is required. This check takes a bit of time, and because commentators must always commentate, you hear what might be repetition to you, but not necessarily to someone who just tuned in. :D
      This is my amateur explanation. Any experts are welcome to add information!

      The Apollo missions were only up there for 8-10 days, whereas usually ISS missions last several months.
      That said, this AX2 mission is only 9 days, so probably what you are seeing here is just the effect from being strapped in to a fixed chair for 12 hours.
      And then probably a standard NASA policy, that astronauts are not allowed to walk by themselves after landing, just to make sure no mishaps are possible, in case they would trip or something due to the unusual sensation og gravity.
      Like how some hospitals in the US will insist on patients being driven around in wheelchairs, even when they are perfectly capable of walking.
