One of the best ways to generate speed is top to bottom surfing- using the whole face of the wave. By the photos it seems that he is not doing a bottom turn right at the bottom of the wave where you have achieved maximum speed from gravity moving down the wave. Likewise he doesn't top turn at the top of the wave so he can have maximum distance to pick up speed down the wave for the next bottom turn. Its like skateboarding down a hill- for maximum speed start at the top of the hill and end at the bottom
