The original story is absolutely great, and I found myself questioning whether the book and Yellow Star were evil the whole time. And the whole feel of The Star In Yellow itself, the book in the story, and what Celestia says near the end of the fic, ""I was young and naive and what does one write about when they are young but themselves? I would look out of the castle and invent magical adventures for myself. I put all my happiness in there, all my love and compassion. And then as I grew older, I wrote about my sadness and grief and pain until it became full of my heartbreak.” That statement is so striking and so true. I mean, when I was really little I did the same, and as I grew those stories grew in much the same ways as Celestia's. As for the RDP? It's probably the best of them so far. Not much more to say about that.
Greg really likes The Star in Yellow. He liked the commentary on alicorns and their god-like nature around the fic's creation (season two). Heck, back when he was working on the original MAS series, he mentioned in the credits of episode 10 how he was stuck on a cliffhanger and needed the next chapter soon. He chose this story to make into an RDP mainly due to the announcement of Princess Flurry Heart and how alicorns just seem to be popping up all over the place nowadays.

Something I noticed a while back that I'm surprised no one else has talked about is the fact that the alcove that twilight reads in is in the shape of a brain, which I thought was a really nice touch. Not sure if it was in the original, but it makes an amazing "Trapped in your own mind" type thing, when it comes to insanity.
Hmm personally I would have waited to do a reaction, to ensure it gets the views he needs. But I don't think Greg cares tbh, hopefully this helps sends at least a little more traffic, the guy so deserves it.
He does deserve it, and I hope so as well. Maybe exposure up front will help with the forward momentum, maybe not, but I've definitely seen people unaware that this new RDP was being made. I've contacted him personally, and he really does seem to be the nicest dude. It's why I advertised his Brawlhalla tournament a few weeks back, have been plugging his marathon stream, and urge people to go watch the RDP first in this video.
On second + viewings I think it makes it very clear that it is about Celestia and Luna, but there's plenty of comments where people don't seem to get that! I really liked this one, and was glad it was more an adaption than a parody. I think the original was already very close in feel to the RDP universe.
The spooky guard with the mask is something that was shown in the Equestria Primates Preview (which is something you should totally watch, bee tee dubs.)

In the library at the start, on the list that Spike is going through, one of the books is named "'Drawing Everypony Like Lizards' by G. Hoofman". The fact that they openly mocked Greg's relative inexperience at drawing ponies like that is really indicative of how brilliant they are at self deprecating humor. Also, his RDP of A Beautiful Day in Equestria (an RDP of a fic Greg wrote) might be a little MORE thoughtful and contemplative, but that's because the original fic was already a metanarrative about the nature of fanfiction and shipping and their relationship to characters.
Also, be sure to READ A Beautiful Day in Equestria before you blind watch it, since the entire point of the RDP is that it's a 'CANON' sequel to the original fic (since Greg was the writer for both)

I actually liked the RDP a bit more than the fic. The fic was the perfect tragedy, that wanted to be a comedy, while still wearing its tragedy hat. At the end it all jumbled up and the story unraveled. The RDP take on it had comidic moments, but it was by no means a comedy, if the fic was as focused on what it wanted to be aa the vid, it wpupd be so much better.

The reason the story is so different is not that he decided to interpret it differently but rather that he needed it to match this world's Celestia.

Hey Blank, got a suggestion for you. Take a look at Everfree Team's channel, formerly My Russian Pony, a group of SFM animators that really do some good work. My two favorites are Cartoon Heroes and Pentaponix - Daft Punk. The first has more background easter eggs than an entire season of MLP, and the second is a one-to-one parody that gets everything amazingly correct (although that second one might have some copyright issues).

The reason the story is so different is not that he decided to interpret it differently but rather that he needed it to match this world's Celestia.
Oh yeah, you're right that the implication is clearly there. I meant they didn't state it outright like the story did, it's still subtle enough that some viewers will miss the connection.

I can't say, but the star in yellow was inspired by the king in yellow a book by hp lovecraft who created azathoth so it might be a reference
Bit old, but as a Lovecraft fan, gotta correct this. The King in Yellow is not a creation of Lovecraft. He was created by Ambrose Bierce's short story of his own creation, and then was later coopted by fans and contributors of Lovecraft's mythos.

Hey Blank, got a suggestion for you. Take a look at Everfree Team's channel, formerly My Russian Pony, a group of SFM animators that really do some good work. My two favorites are Cartoon Heroes and Pentaponix - Daft Punk. The first has more background easter eggs than an entire season of MLP, and the second is a one-to-one parody that gets everything amazingly correct (although that second one might have some copyright issues).
