Holy moley, I got goosebumps when I read that! To see Del Shannon perform Runaway at a high school assembly! What, was your principal Del's uncle or something? Lol!

What an absolute classic. Still sounds good in 2024. Banging.
You know you’re old when you reminisce of the days when “real” music was played.
You said it and how true it is.
Yeah,not like the crap today.
Released in 1961 ... 60 Years later in 2021 and it's still a banger!

Yes, it is. The oldies are for the dead of winter, at least for me.

2022 still strong and muscular
Sadly, Del shot and killed himself in 1990-- he suffered from depression and it got the better end and is very sad. His born name was Charles Westover... his voice through this song will forever echo into the future~~
So sad.I didn't know that. :(
How awful 😮🙄
Yeah I feel so sorry for him. I have depression too but I'm still here, I know how it feels to be suicidal though. May he rest in peace, wish he was still here with us today.

This is my all time favorite song since I was a baby and I'm in tears to know this I hope he knows how much I love everything about this song 💔💯🎶

Those dancing moves are totally awesome and killing everything we've got now! Girls back then were just more classy and have fun from dancing and moving to the music. Today is only showing off. Where's the fun? Of course with Del Shannon, oh yeah!
How many of you as teenagers thought of running away from home? Lol
Thank God I went back. Love you Mom. No safer place than home sweet home. God bless you mom for all the heartaches I caused you. 😭
Sixty plus years later and this song is still amazing.

Listen to that amazing falsetto voice of Del Shannon, and Maximilian (Max Crook) playing his custom Musitron, pure gold right here.

You mention Max Crook. He just died, July 1, 2020, so RIP, Max.

It sure is, mind-blowing, really awsome keyboard/synth for such an early moment in electronic music all the way back to 1961!
I heard this when it was released 1961 and I’m still listening to it in 2021!
Listening to this 62 years after it came out and man this song is emotional, such a breathtaking and beautiful song

The frantic organ solo about half-way through still sounds really awesome 60 years later.🎹👏🏻

@@loosehandle1 It's a modified version of a vacuum tube electrronic keyboard called a Clavioline. I believe that the modified version was called a Musitron. The instrument had filters and vibrato and was used on some other hits, notably, "Telstar".
Isn't that a theremin?
@@criticalhard Nope, it has a keyboard with switchable vibrato and filters. It's an early synth predecessor.
Del Shannon has a voice from another world.. And the soloist, Max Crook's wonderfully, inventive keyboard playing is one of the best moments in music.. Unbelievable..
It is a great voice.
@@paulbryant8403 Indeed, Shannon had a unique voice. All best wishes.
Very interesting…didn’t know the name of Max the keyboard player…we all tried to emulate his solo at that time…thanks for the note🇬🇧D
@@derrickgreen9020 Many thanks for your note. Great sound. I remember Max saying in an interview, that the tune you hear, is exactly what he played off the top of his head on stage one night, when Shannon was composing this song and asked him for a bridge. Max then stated, "I have no idea where it came from..." All best.
Maxfield Doyle Crook (November 2, 1936 - July 1, 2020) was an American musician, a pioneer of electronic music in pop. He was the featured soloist on Del Shannon's 1961 hit "Runaway", which he co-wrote and on which he played his own invention, the Musitron. Sounds like it should be used in a Syfi.
Dexter New Blood brought me here! Will never hear this song the same again without thinking about the serial killer in Dexter! Still love it and think its catchy though

As I walk along, I wonder
A what went wrong whit our love
A love that was so strong
And as I still walk on
I think of the thing's we've done
Together, while our hearts were young
I'm a walkin' in the rain
Tears are fallin' and I feel a pain
A wishin' you were here by me
To end this misery
And I wonder, I wa wa wa wa wonder
Why a why why why why why
She ran away
And I wonder where she will stay
My little runaway
My run run run run runaway

I listened to this as a 5 y/o boy back in 1962 and in 2023 still today it resonates with me. Its one of my favorite hit songs of all times for me. I love to see what they look like today in 2023; the singer and the beautiful dancers; wish they can do the same performance for us to see in 2023.
At the local drive in burger place, this song would come on the radio and everyone would crank it up. I miss those days.
