Great advice Dave. As the owner of expensive branded guitars, Chinese-built guitars and Philippines-built guitars I hope that newbies to the instrument take your excellent advice. Just for the record my favourite electric guitar for playing is a Korean-built strat copy and my favourite acoustic is a Philippines-built Taylor copy.... and I have both originals brands in my small collection!
A guitar is only as good as the person playing it - along with their knowledge of customizing/upgrading a guitar and shaping tone through AMPS. Social Media has been a positive BOON for companies marketing through myths. Social Media enhances the 'herd mentality'. People are normally very tribal - they're pack animals. So, they have this irrational fear of not being part of the herd. Look at how much 'social media addiction' is a thing these days. People are addicted to 'belonging'. So, they will buy all the name brand stuff and put themselves in the poor house just so they won't 'stand out' or be 'shunned'. A brand name doesn't give talent. But, people can sure HIDE behind one.
