Ive got a Z330R , 48" deck , and its awesome. The one thing i didnt see in your video was about the decks . A 42" is made of 12 guage steel ,and the 48" and above are thicker with a 10 gauge.

Something you need to consider is if you have a dealer in your area. If you need warranty service you may not have an authorized dealer close by and have to wait several weeks or months to get service. I have been looking at the Cub but don’t have a dealer in my area, so I’ll probably go with the Deere.

I got a ‘23 Z320R last year and really like it. The upgrades from the previous version are good. I did get an extended warranty just in case. It wasn’t very much and the dealer will do pick up and delivery for work with it.

Just got my Z330R recently and replaced the plastic bushings at the top of the caster spindle with ball bearings (John Deere p/n AM102888), same part that's at the bottom of the caster spindle. This is easy to do! Lift front end of mower up about 10-12" so that caster wheels are free and are not supporting weight. Remove front caster (single bolt on top of black retainer cap) and knock out plastic bushings at the top. Install AM102888 bearings (about $15 ea. you need 2 total) where the black bushings were. Reinsert caster through both bearings. In my case, I needed to add a 3/8" (ID) flat washer between the top of the caster spindle and the top retainer (black metal cap) to maintain proper spacing. If it is too tight there will be some caster swiveling resistance because the black top retaining cap will be rubbing. I used a stainless 3/8" washer which is about 0.050" thick and 0.875" diameter. The O.D. of the washer should ideally be the same or less than the caster spindle) Worked perfectly! Slightly thicker washer works as well but creates a tiny bit of up/down play in the caster, which is not a problem, but I wanted mine to fit perfectly! This is not a cheesy hack, but a permanent durable solution to any potential plastic bushing issues in the future. Now you've got a much more robust front caster setup just like the design of the Z500 series and up!

Just wanted to let you know about another difference between these. Rear tire size
42” inch deck models have 18” rear tires while the 48/54” models have 20” rear tires
Also want to add that the Z320R engine, it’s the 21.5 hp Kawasaki, not a Briggs
You were right the first time lol
Just picked one up about 2 weeks ago, and am loving it so far!
(And am absolutely blown away with how much better the 42” Accel Deep on this is vs the regular 42” Edge decks that come on the 100 series tractors, especially in tall wet grass! It simply refuses to clump at all lol
    Absolutely night and day difference!
I would have liked it to have been made with the thicker gage steel that is used in the 48/54” decks though lol)

Thanks Aaron, I think I was just getting confused when going all the engine and deck options. I knew the 21.5 was Kaw when I was writing it all down I didnt realize I called it a B&S.. When we go that R model at the dealership a few days after I saw it for the first time at Lowes. Inwas shocked how much better it is now. Im glad JD made the improvements.

@@Mechanical_Mind All good. I’m sure I would have messed up on some things as well lol
I actually had to get mine at Home Depot as our dealer here in western Pa (West Central Equipment) as of two weeks ago had only gotten 12 Z300 series between all 5 of its locations and none of them had a 42” deck option. Was really considering going with the 48” but with some of the tight places I have to mow it wouldn’t have fit (the 42” barely fits even with the guard up lol)
Have to agree JD made some huge improvements to the Z300 lineup. Last years model wasn’t even on my radar, but they really won me over this year!
I do have a question that you may be able to shed some light on. As far as I’m aware JD doesn’t offer fab decks on any of its equipment, even the top dog Z900 and X700 all have stamped decks (albeit very good quality stamped decks)
Any idea why they seem to be the last holdout with stampings?

@@Mechanical_Mind I had the Cub cadet zt1 50 which only comes in a Kawasaki 23hp on my radar. I saw the z330m at Lowe’s and now I’m second guessing my decision. Yes the Cub has a fab deck but I didn’t like how there are vent holes on each side of the spindles. They not sealed with the deck like the z330m. I might just pull the trigger on the z330m after seeing this video. Thank you again for your info

I’ve had good luck with the B&S. I just bought the 325e. I have a briggs & Stratton generator ( 2005 ) that still runs like a champ. Just gave my son my old lawnmower to my son, it has a B&S & is flawless

    • @Mechanical_Mind

Everyone always talks bad about B&S and praise Kawasaki & Kohler. They all have their flaws on certain models. I see the least amount of problems out of the v-twin B&S engine on the residential mowers.

  • @mosfet500

    Thanks for the video.
I look at several factors. Parts and the dealer network is a big deal for me and that gives Toro and JD the edge in my view. My friend just yesterday broke an idler pulley on his JD compact tractor deck. We had the part today and it's back up and working.
Before I buy a machine I check the parts views on the manufacturers site to see if major parts are available, it's hard to beat JD on this even in their cheaper machines which I stay away from. BTW the 48" and 54" decks are fabricated and not pressed, I don't like the 42" deck either, I wouldn't by a stamped deck machine, they are 12 ga. , the 48" and 54" are 10 ga., that's a lot more metal. I don't know if they use different spindles though.

Just bought Z720E and Z330M current year models..both have 23hp kawasaki engine..price difference one was 4k one was 7k both have 48in decks.. honest opinion. The Z720e still a better buy the pro deck can take a beating and the bigger tires and extra weight keeps it from bouncing alot on uneven terrain. The transmission are different and you can feel how smoother it is on Z720e. The Z720e just feels way more solid all around and the seat is super comfortable..so don't buy on hp specs alone is my thought now. I only buy 48in deck size so no matter what I cut it never over does the engine..to big of a deck is nice but the engine is stressed out more especially in wet thick grass. Just my two cents.

      @Mechanical_Mind  Год назад +3

Hi Stephen, Short answer yes. If you store it properly, keep it clean, including the deck, and properly maintained. (And dont abuse it while using it) You will still have things happen like having to replace the battery etc. Keeping fresh clean fuel in it will be critical.

Hi Sun Lee, I'll be honest. I'm not a huge fan for the John Deere Z500s either. They have weak stamped decks and weak transmissions for the $. In my opinion you'd be better off with a Cub Cadet, Scagg, Bad Boy, Toro or Hustler. To narrow it down between those brands I'd consider the dealership location and their customer service. That can vary drastically between locations. Good luck and thanks for watching! 🍻

The spindles are very light duty and made in China. Actully most of the parts are made in China. The deck is a thin stamped deck. The transmissions (Tuff Torque brand) for some reason on the 500s I see them come in with less than 30 hrs and one of transmissions have destroyed itself. It's weird. One had 12 hrs on it. Luckily it was under warranty but it just get another low quality part installed to replace it.
I'm about to do a video on the new Z545R and it has 3 electronic buttons instead of a throttle. Too many things to go wrong in my opinion vs a mechanical throttle cable.
I would also avoid all EFI engines on any brand.
