This was a great video! It's something that I've been thinking about quite a bit lately too. I put a lot more thought into the books that I do buy nowadays. When I first joined bookube, I went on a book buying spree and just bought ALL THE BOOKS. A majority of those books didn't even interest me, so I didn't read them!
This is such a cool/different video, loved all the shots in the bookstore! I've definitely done the book spring cleaning before, and it always feels nice to have more space on your shelves to fill up with books you love!
Ariel this was such a nice video! i agree with everything you said and THE SHOTS AT THE BOOK STORE WERE SO BEAUTIFUL. i really need to do the same and clean out my unwanted books. it'll probably happen during my move! Anyway this was great!
polandbananasBOOKS murp
I know I totally need to do this D: One day it will happen, I just don't know if I'm ready to part with them, it's so hard!
But I am working towards it slowly with my TBR Jar guidelines, and hopefully I can get things going soon :P
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! And I so need to get on this #GoodbyeBooks train! I have a pretty decent stack of books that I know I'm not going to read/reread, and getting rid of them will make my life so much easier! BYE BYE BOOKS!!
Give them to me please!!!!!
I absolutely love this, I loved how you talked about how the experience made you see which books you really do love. I actually have a stack of books I've been planning on donating for the longest time, but have never actually gotten around to it... this inspires me to actually go and donate them finally!
Ditto
I do a clean out every year - sometimes it's hard to say goodbye! But most of the time, I don't miss them, and if I ever do, it's easy to pick up a used copy in the city :) Spring cleaning fo evaaaaaa! So cathartic.
I CANT GET OVER HOW NICE CANADA IS!
This is such a nice idea, there are definitely some books I need to get rid of!
Every year my mom participates in a sort of flea market so I'm used to getting rid of books that I don't want anymore/know I'm not going to be reading. It's super nice to see people getting your old books and being excited about them ! I want to make book lovers happy !
I always get rid of books I didn't enjoy/don't have any interest in :) Hopefully this will inspire more people to do so :)
I couldn't agree with you more about the fact that books just need a loving home! And if they've got a home with me, but it's not a loving one where they're getting used and read and adored, then it's not the right home for the books. So off they go to the second-hand book shop so they can become someone else's favorite - as well as clearing up potential space on my shelves :)
I recently became much more mindful lately about books I buy. I borrow a lot more from the library and I buy a lot more e-books, trying to keep my physical books on the shelves down to books I absolutely adore that I want to live with forever. Except then I discovered the wonders of the used bookstore. Oops! I did a #goodbyebooks of sorts but without photos a few months ago. I'll do another soon. Lovely idea! Now, be more careful restocking your shelves!
Another idea I have seen to do with books is to start a community library. (I saw it on Nickelodeon) Build or assign a space in your neighborhood, apartment building, grandparent's rest home, etc. as a library with a leave one / take one sign. Sorting out your book collection is also a great for those of who are limited in space at home. Keep the ones you love, eBook the ones you sorta love, and then sell / giveaway the rest.
The library in my hometown is really small and doesn't tend to buy books all the time because they don't have the money for it, so most of the books they have are donated. So I took a lot of books that I never plan on reading to the library and gave it to them.
Usually when booktubers want to get rid of their books, they do a giveaway, but I am really glad that you decided to do something more with all of your books! I am very happy for you.
Very noble of you to say why am I keeping books I never have and never will read? And doing something about it besides letting them sit on a shelf to add to a number.
I recently got rid of some of my children's books that I'm not too attached to and it was nice to think how someone new will enjoy the books I used to love as a child!!
I've always wondered what somebody with as massive a collection as you does with unwanted books. I love that you donated a large chunk of them and sold the rest to buy another book. You are a gem lol.
This is a lovely thing to promote. I really hate when books don't get read - then they're just lumps of paper. Good stuff!
Your so positive and bubbly! I absolutely love your attitude!
I'm planning on doing this as soon as I get home from school. So ready to pull all the books off the shelf and organize then and purge them now! Only two weeks until then!
You're such a lovely person. I don't wish to lent go of any of my current books. Yet maybe someday. -peace
This is good thing to do. Gives more shelf space to books that you actually like. I have never let my not-enjoyable-book-pile to get that large though. Usually I drop few at same time. But then again my collection isn't nearly as large as yours.
There's this amazing shelf in the nearest library that I just went this evening that's called "The Book Exchange Corner" and people trade their old books there, you don't even need a card to borrow those! I find that incredible and I'm probably going to do the same the next time I go down there :)
I really enjoyed this idea. I did something similar last year and it was nice to just keep books I absolutely loved or wanted! You are adorable.
I recently got rid of more than 15 books that I didn't want to read. I sold them for cheap and I got the next volume of a manga I'm currently reading. It was so liberating and exciting, and I felt ten times better afterwards.
I loved this video for the content and the artistry that went into it! You have inspired me to clean my bookshelves! 😊
When I read the title.I thought you were leaving and freaked out a moment
This is great! And the area you live in is beautiful!
Loved this video! I think collecting books is great but I also think we should embrace sharing our books when if we can because books are meant to be read.
I love your energy and excitement
I'm just going to say one thing if you didn't like the Mortal Instruments series I would recommend the spin-off series called the Infernal Devices they are set in the 1800's and it is only three books long compared to the Mortal Instruments that is 6 books long.
Such a good thought. Such a good concept. Its hell difficult to part with the books that have been living on our bookshelves for so long. But then again, if we're not reading them, we might as well give them to the ones who'd want to.
Gotta get to this mission soon. :)
I love this video, love everything you said about books, they need to be love and that's such a beautiful speech you did at the end
I give away my books pretty regularly, once I've read them and know I won't read it again, then I either give it away to friends or to a charity shop. I did a small clean out in March as a friend of mine works in a school library and was giving a small amount of money to buy books. She was buying them second hand to get a better deal and more books, so I went through my books and gave her all the YA ones that she wanted
THE JOURNAL!!! awesome thumbs up !
Yay! New video!
I love Kurt and I want that book
I did this exact thing about a year and a half ago, when I moved into my current place. It's much smaller, thus necessitating a spring cleaning. I was able to cut down a collection of ~500+ books to a current count of 375. (I just can't say goodbye to my SF paperbacks.) - I might take a second pass and see what else I can part with.
Good for you girl! I think its awesome your not afraid to let go!
This video definitely inspired me to go through my books! I know there are some on my shelf that will never get read. Just a problem with buying just for the sake of buying...
I donate my books as well..but to make it easier for myself I toss them into the donation book dumpster things..lol..but such a good feeling to hope someone will love the books that I didn't really care for.
Such and awesome video! I wish you had uploaded this a few weeks ago, because I sold back a ton of books recently. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture, but it was so exciting to know that my books would find new and better homes!
I actually love this. Beautiful video, Ariel.
Great video,Ariel! Going to take your advice and clean out my own bookshelf,I have so many unwanted books that are just waiting to be read!
Sorry I just got so excited haha! I read those like 4 or 5 years ago and kid you not but for months now I've been trying to remember the title and seeing you pull out, I was like OH MY GOD!! that's it! that's the book! haha
I've also been gathering up books to sell to the used bookstore for credit so you and I are on the same wavelength right now. I'm at the point where I've either got to get rid of some stuff or start thinking about buying more bookshelves and I just straight up don't have the space to put any more shelves in here. I've left the TBR shelves alone for now, but I should probably take a look at them and see if there's anything there that I can admit to myself that I'm just not ever going to read.
As someone with OCPD, I tend to segregate my books and things a lot, but I can't bring myself to part with any of my unappreciated books just yet. Maybe soon when I can verify that the books I don't want will get good homes. #GoodbyeBooks should definitely be a thing. Aces.
I read Maus!!! I think that's the title lol. I really liked those!!
This a really excellent idea! I try and donate books to my local charity shop every month if I can. Really enjoyed the fact that you took us along with you :)
This was a great video and a great idea. I always feel bad if there are books that I'm not really interested in on my shelf because I feel like they're going to waste! Giving them away is the best thing to do :)
Yes, one of my new years resolutions is to sell/donate 100 books. I am trying to read 20% of the book first to see if I like it or not though. I don't want to miss out on something that might be awesome. I guess I'm not quite at the cut my losses and just get rid of them point yet.
I did this during the Christmas Holidays!
Great video! You definitely have inspired me to finally get rid of the stack of books I have lying around waiting to be sold/donated but haven't got around to it yet. I may even do a second sweep to see if I have some more.
Another great thing to do with old books is to give them to relatives like younger cousins or something!
you had so many books to get rid of! I definitely have some books I need to get rid of! Great video!
My mom thinks I'm crazy for only buying books I've read before but I could never stand to buy a book that might end up bad. They're like children to me!
Hey! That's Keiran's book store! Janus Books! I love that place! I've been planning on selling some of my books to him too.I didn't realize you were so close to my home...kind of weird. But also awesome!
I regularly get rid of books. Usually by posting a picture with the books and titles on facebook so if any of my friends want them they can come and pick them up. The rest I donate. I read about 100 books a year and just have one bookshelf so I also give away books I really liked so that more people can read it.
Great video.
I'm sorry I can't tweet you a picture since my "spring cleaning" happened in January already.
I already did this a few months ago, it felt amazing!
This was such a fantastic video, Ariel! I loved the part where you said books are meant to be read :) So true. I don't have a ton of unread books, but I do have some that I need to get rid of!
That bookstore looks amazing!
Oh man, loved the bloopers at the end!! - Becks
I really love this video & I actually find it super inspiring :) When school's over maybe I'll do this!
I always get rid of books that I didn't enjoy. I prefer to have books on my shelf that I enjoyed/loved reading!
I tried to give my books away but I can't do it. I am attached to everyone one of my books. Most of them are gifts and I can't give them away.
I have had that Kurt Cobain journals since high school it's so cool.
I actually did do the same thing this week as well. I got rid of a lot of my books that I didn't like or lost interest in reading and I traded them for store credit and got a new book. I thought about doing an UN-haul video but I didn't maybe next time I will.
Great video, and beautiful bookstore shots :)
Was that Janus Books? I love that book store.
This is such a great idea, I certainly have some books that I don't need anymore.
Wow I loved watching this! It's so cute (:
I'm so proud of you. This video was absolutely incredible, and I can't wait to donate my books :) #goodbyebooks
i have two question for you. One: Do you listen to the radio while you are driving? If so what satitioon do you listen to? And question two is: How many books do you have now on your shelf? Could you do a bookshelf tour for us?
I don't plan on re reading most of my books and have lots of books I'm never going to read but I just can't get rid of them. They are like my children haha
Another idea for getting rid of books: donate them to Little Free Libraries! They're little boxes of books, and you can take or leave books. According to the website, they have them worldwide...we have four in my hometown alone. Any time I'm getting rid of books, I always take a few to each Little Free Library. :)
I'd send you a picture of all the books I gave away but I did that a few months ago! I know what you mean about the weight being lifted off your shoulders. Feels so much better.
I bought Kurt Cobain's Journals during a work trip a few months ago, except I got the paperback so it looks like a spiral bound notebook. My coworkers kept asking me why I would take notes in a museum!
I just gave away a whole big box of books a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't take any pictures! I know what you mean though, It felt good to get some out of my space.
I just gave away a bunch of books yesterday! feel so good. #goodbyebooks
I'm always doing this because my used bookstore has such good books. I do it to get store credit so I can buy books I want to read.
I'm doing a similar thing, but with 'everything' in my room... It's a looong process, mostly because I get lazy at times, and I'm indecisive with some things I do or do not want to keep.
I did this about a month ago.. I got rid of 36 books.. it felt amazing. And I did the same thing.. took them to a used bookstore.. git a trade in and some cash back then donated the rest. I hope someone else can enjoy them now!
This was a great video. I have an insane amount of books that I just don't know what to do with. I don't want to donate the ones I feel are worth money because I spent a lot of money collecting them, but I'll happily donate some of my others that I know aren't worth too much... that sounds awful. The thing is, I just can't bring myself to do it!
Such a good cause!!
This is such a great idea, Ariel! :-)
I want to do this!!! Hopefully I can get to it this weekend, but if not, I probably can the following weekend :D Lovely, lovely video!!
I love this video!
i'm currently at 1 book i'd give away haha when i get more i'm definitely going to do this! this is such a great idea :)
I never will give my books away. maybe the ones I don't like but that's it
I already did my spring cleaning and gave away a bunch of books (ones I'd read, but didn't want to read again), so I can't send a picture because they are already gone!
I feel like I should do this too... Great video! :D
I wish more unhauls were more like this
I do a big book purge every six months. It's hard to believe how many books can accumulate in six months. It's harder for me to transport them anywhere to donate though because I don't have a car. I need to find an easier way to get rid of books.
this is a great idea and I will send you the picture!
On the ds game animal crossing, i knew a girl named Ariel, that lived in Canada, and very nice and thought out video :)
I really enjoyed this video! I tend to give away books every couple of months! I already have a pile of books waiting to be donated actually!
I need to do this myself..UNHAUL! Though I don't sell them to a used book store, I just donate 'em *thumbs up* #GoodbyeBooks Am on a huge spring cleaning mode too.. All the ARCs need a good home too
Let it gooooooo, let it goooooo~~ Amazing video. I have to do the same to some of my books =)
Sorted out 70+ books and am gonna donate them to charity!😊 Loved this video
This is awesome! :D
