    Sorry correction 7:27 all the Noctilux f/0.95s are 'Made in Germany' not the U.S. not sure why I said that... :/

    After watching it again in 4k, we can tell that the Nokton f1.1 is nice, but the Noctilux f1 adds an atmosphere to the shot. Very artistic. Just a few lenses have this property without messing everything up. The Zeiss C Sonnar is another one that does it well.
    I also noticed that they both seem to have comparable transmission by looking at shots and the EXIF from the M9p (they are
    both 7 elements in 6 groups).
    I am surprised that they have almost the same size. I had the Nokton f/1.1 before, and the small blockage didn't bother me at all.
    All in all, I would choose the Noctilux f/1 every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
    Great video James, now we need a beautiful model to shoot some epic photos :)

      yes I do remember the Zeiss C Sonnar doing this, you are right. Noctilux f/1 is just amazing, for the engineering they did to create this lens back then, now everything is computer aided.

    I sold my Leica f1 Noct after I compared it with Nikon 58mm f1.2 Noct and Mitakon 50mm f0.95 (mark 1)with the 'then' new Sony A7R, because the Mitakon was sharper wide open yet has a very similar bohek to the Leica 50mm f1 in all apertures.

    Greetings, I really enjoyed this unboxing/review. I purchased the same version of this lens but ironically got a bad copy. I returned it and purchased the Summilux 50 1.4 instead. Then I cheated and purchased the TTRrtisans 50mm f.95 to compliment it. That lens will never be mistaken for or replace the Noctilux, but it’s a nice look nice for something that I won’t use that often. That said however, what I really want know is are you still enjoying your M9 and why? I just purchased a nice copy at a GREAT price from Roberts Camera out of Indianapolis, IN. Waiting for it to arrive now.
    Congratulations on your self gift. Continued happiness and success to you and yours.
    Chaps

      Thank you!! Yes I think this is the biggest Christmas gift I ever spent on myself, sometimes I feel that it is too much, but I been wanting this lens so long already, and this year for everybody has been crazy, even for myself. How was your Noctilux f/1 bad? it was out of calibration?? Yes I am still enjoying my M9-P, even with the Noctilux, with its light gathering capabilities I am still able to shoot at ISO 160 even in doors, so the images are so clean. I just like it, because its very simple, no need to keep looking at the screen because its so bad haha, its thiner than the M 240 ( we dont need video ), it has a nice classic shutter sound, 18MP is more than enough for everything even just social media, the CCD sensor in there, if just shooting raw and using Lightroom, the colors are just good to go, no need to edit, the white balance is not bad either, takes cheap UHS-I SD cards so dont need to spend $$$ on expensive ones, just teaches you to slow down, buffer in it sucks, its just the simple Leica mentality, less is more, prices for the M9 and M9-P are increasing again, alot is realizing they want the CCD filmic look, without editing it.

      @@GuamPhotography First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. WRT my Noctilux 50 1.0, in hindsight it probably did need to be calibrated and that lens would have been just fine. But I was feeling so incredibly guilty for spending so much on just ONE lens that when it wasn’t focusing sharply, it was out of here. And I don’t really have and regrets about that decision. I own the APO 90 & 75 f2’s, the 50 1.4 and the 28 2.8. I might add a 35. Undecided - 1.4 or f2. I’m also debating whether to trade in my SL2 and Sigma glass to help in getting either a M10-P, or go for broke literally with an M10-R. What’s solid are my M7 0.85 and my inbound M9. I specifically purchased it for its Kodachrome filmic rending. I arrived at Leica after years with first Nikon and later Fujifilm. The Nikon D700 was my first love, but the Df stole my heart. And it was the tactile experience of the Df and its smaller size that led me to Fujifilm. First the X system and then the GFX system. Loved the system but the GFX took me back to size. Hated that part 100%. And during the length of that run I was always caught up in matching the fabled, legendary, Leica Look. So I think that Leica was inevitable. And the SL/L Alliance really made the jump affordable. The problem came when a first time rangefinder shooter feel head over heels in love with rangefinder shooting. The Proverbial question - Who knew that the rangefinder way of shooting would be generate such a romantic and nostalgic sensibility to my entire photographic experience? But with Leica I need to caution that intellect is not usurped by emotion. 😂😅🤣

      Hey Chaps!! Yes I can imagine the feeling, feeling guilty spending alot of $$$ on just one lens, and when you get it in, its just not functioning properly and not what you paid for. I had anxiety waiting for the Noctilux coming in, thinking someone may go wrong like it not being calibrated, or focus ring is stuck, then I would have to send it away when I just got it, either to Leica Tokyo or DAG stateside. Especially since its an old lens, you don't know how many owners it had, and how many times it was worked on by individuals that may not know what they are doing! lol, just glad it was very clean and calibrated, it really looked like someone just worked on it, felt really lucky. Very nice the 90mm APO, and 75 cron, was so close getting a 90mm APO for portraits. Im thinking if I were you add the CV 35 f/2, you may not need 1.4 unless you are doing portraits or doing a lot of night street shooting. If you really love the rangefinder experience, the M10-P would be nice, because of the quieter shutter and touch screen, I wouldn't get the M10-R right now, not sure how would the low light performance will be, I'm sure its not bad, but not sure if I need 40MP, unless maybe im doing commercial work for clients, which I don't do, sometimes though lol, though having nicer image quality (higher MP) is nicer too, hard decision. I too used to shoot Nikon at first (used to be Canon), then got the Leica M8.2 around 2011, and been attracted to Leica ever since. I almost got a Nikon Df again! lol, used to have a silver one, was the first to get it here on island, did a pre order, and then later got the black Df, because missed it so much, that can be such a great event camera. I think with Leica, if you have that emotion, that connection to the camera, you can actually make pretty good photos, inspiration maybe? haha, thanks for the comment!

    Nice video, I usually visit Guam for work twice a year but haven't been able to do so last year, hopefully that will change next year. Would be great to get together and have you try out my Canon 50mm f0.95.

      yes that'll be cool! Your Canon 50mm 0.95 is M mount? I used to have a Canon Rangefinder 7, with Canon 50mm f/0.95, but regretfully sold it, I only shot with the Canon f/0.95 on film.

      @@GuamPhotography yes it is, I had it done by DAGS. I think he is probably the most reliable person in the US to do it. I use it on my Leica SL2 with adapter. I really like how the pictures come out, some vignetting and some chromatic aberration wide open but still very artistic and one of my favorite lenses.

    Quick question: how can I set non-standard lens the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton 1.1 M mount on my Z 7 mirrorless, with an adapter, please? The Z 7 only recognize F1.2, F1.4, no F1.1. Thank you.

    • @GuamPhotography
      @GuamPhotography  3 года назад

      I think as long as the aperture ring on the Voigtlander 50mm 1.1 is set at 1.1, you should be good to go, and the Nikon Z7 will do the correct exposure for the image automatically, but in the EXIF data it may only be at 1.2.

    nice lens, but honestly not much different from voigtlander lens. maybe it's more noticeble in artistic shots rather than everyday ordinary objects? I just thought in the beginning of the video, there's gonna be much more difference. people buy the nocti lens for this much difference?

  • @thedailynugget

    I'm confused. At 9:55 you give us an example and tell us that this is what it looks like wide open at f1 but the meta data on the top left corner says you're shooting at F/2.0?

    • @GuamPhotography
      @GuamPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Remember there is no electrical contacts between the Leica M body and Leica Lens, so the aperture value that you see is a guess from the camera itself. So its just an estimate what the Leica M does just for the exif data.

      The Noctilux is terrible against those two Voigtlanders. Really bad CA and light falloff. I would say that the noctilux is maybe 70% as good as either the two Noktons. The good thing is that you got a good deal on that lens and could flip it for market value and get your dream lens, the canon vintage f0.95.
