So, I played this game called COPS which took place in the 80's California. Party played a chemist cop, a seasoned police lieutenant, a rich boy ex-medicine-faculty-student cop, and a forensics cop (iirc). It was fun! We rode all over LA in a black Lamborghini, interviewed people, managed not to start a shootout with some ghetto gangsters and apprehended the suspect when we divided up and surrounded his house. After the game, GM told us most of his players usually made min-maxed combat characters and solved everything with police brutality. Us four noobs creating a diverse bunch of specialists not really geared for SWAT operations has made things really fun for the GM, and I could see that in retrospect. So yes, there are other ways to play RPGs than DnD.

I’m a big fan of the combat. It’s way higher stakes, so even though you won’t be fighting often, when you do it’s very intense. I like the fighting back option, it makes everything faster and more exciting.
Whenever a gun is drawn, everyone goes caveman spongebob on me, lol

  • @Etherwinter
    @Etherwinter 5 лет назад +100

If you're looking for D&D style combat mechanics, you'll be disappointed. It's very mechanic-lite compared. I found it easier to GM.
You'll be using your non-combat skills most of the time. CJ isn't lying about Library Use saving the day--or the world, it depends. Most of the time you'll be investigating localized threats and eerie happenings. CoC's combat is few and far between, and you'll spend most of your time investigating and dealing with mythos threats indirectly; but there are times where you'll have to bring out the guns. A lot of times you'll have to run away.
It's fun to watch players go from "Hah, I can handle this" to "I need more guns, what's the most powerful gun I can buy?" or even "I'd like to buy some dynamite and also somehow acquire alcohol (during the Prohibition no less) to make molotov cocktails."
I had one player's character go from complete pacifist to wielding a baseball bat within a a couple of scenarios, and after the last scenario she considered picking up guns.

i could use some pointers on how to run the game. i know quite a few murder hobos and figured this game could break them of that sad habbit.

    • @Etherwinter
      @Etherwinter 5 лет назад +10

@@Atamosk-bu7zt There's a starter PDF available online for free that contains a good beginner scenario for first time keepers. It's called The Haunting and introduces everyone, including players, to the basics. It emphasizes following up clues and figuring out what happened to the thing they're investigating, and has a combat encounter to top it all off.
Investigation and character interaction is key. If the characters are talking and investigating and stuff, don't try to force them to get on track UNLESS they're going to get way off track or they're taking far too long to get back to it. In that case you can give them a nudge in the right direction. In the same vein, sometimes they may run into a dead end when investigating clues. In that case it's okay to call for an intelligence check for everyone, so you can have one character have a small epiphany (not giving everything away, but just something like "you have x piece of evidence, you have a feeling that if you follow that up you can uncover more")
Combat situations should be present but also few and far between. It's not a game like D&D where you'll be running them through dungeons will multiple encounters. Players can't win by killing everyone, they have to use their smarts more often than not. But there will be situations where they WILL have to fight.
If you're running a module you don't NEED to stick to the rules to the letter, sometimes bending or even breaking the rules to keep things fun/scary or at a good pace is worth it. Sometimes tweaking monster behaviour or personality can make things more exciting, and don't be afraid to come up with something on the fly to surprise the players; just keep it within the tone/theme/context of the scenario.

We were playing The Haunted House (my keeper preferred early rule editions) and couldn't find Corbitt. And the landlord had just said that we needed to make sure nobody got hurt there again...... He did NOT agree with our solution, saying rubbish like "how am I gonna rent out a pile of rubble?"

At 10:09 there is a simplification that can be made (that does not have so many special cases).
If you want to roll d100 (meaning from 1 to 100) then the easiest way is to say that the "tens" dice goes from 0 to 90 and the "ones" dice goes from 1 to 10.
This means that 80 and 0 would be 90. It takes a bit to get used to it but then there are no special rules.
    Some examples.
    00 & 1 = 1
    00 & 0 = 10
    20 & 1 = 21
    80 & 0 = 90
    90 & 0 = 100
    50 & 7 = 57
    etc.
This way the dice roll is always from 1 to 100 and more importantly, every number is represented once and only once!
    Hope this helps someone!

ALL RIGHT! The link to the *free Call of Cthulhu 7th-edition Quickstart Rules* is in the video information above.
Call of Cthulhu uses the Basic RolePlaying rules system by Chaosium, Inc. and that is my favourite kind of rules system. You roll percentiles for actions, and so you always see the odds in front of you. It matters if you make especially low or especially high rolls; there are degrees of success. Characters and monsters have the same kinds of numerical stats. Characters can't appreciably change physically or mentally, but they improve their skills after each session, if a skill was used in a dangerous or life-threatening situation. You must roll OVER your current skill % value, and if you do, you will improve your % by a few points. It is easy in the beginning but harder and harder to improve as you get more expert.

I LOVE and was amazed by how easy this was to learn from the starter box! :O
A choose your own adventure before you read the rules?! No idea why D&D hasn't done this!
Thanks for the video! I started for clarification on combat and now I'm going through them all! :D

After D&D, CoC is my favourite tabletop RPG! And the 7th edition (the latest) is the best yet. Good video.

Also worth noting, a D12 is never used in Call of Cthulhu.

      J. Jonah Jameson as if the D12 needed more places to be useless.

Actually I use them in my games. Occasionally I will set up a wild party or event for the players. Depending on how they play their character at the party and how much they cut loose and live the moment, they will be allowed s D12 roll to recover sanity.

Really? I once gave my players medieval weaponry to fight some cultists and since some weapons weren't covered by CoC weapon chart i used dnd weapon chart (and added +1 to every slashing and piercing weapon damage)

Thank you for your videos, especially for considering the people who played none TRPGs like myself. In Ukraine TRPG aren't too popular and we don't have localizations of them. I'd like to learn basics of DnD and CoC, in order to choose or develop a system to use for creating and managing relatively my unique game world for a TRPG. And I prefer mystery over combat so your videos about CoC are helpful.

I'm really looking forward to playing CoC. I only wish there where models involved. Painting my character model is one of the things I really enjoy about D&D.

If you want models to paint by Arkham horror: Mansion of madness they have great call of Cthulhu models but you'll have to buy the broad game thru.

I’m going to be running a Pulp Cthulhu based game so I’m learning how to DM this system. I do remember playing CoC in college and my character always had 10 sticks of dynamite and 30 feet of fuse on him. There were countless situations where it was useful, unfortunately my character was always somewhere else when it was most useful.
