    Absolutely wonderful, sitting inside my small town apartment, watching you and your son at the water and on the cliffs. I don't know if I could still take a winter dip, but I remember saunas and jumps into a Minnesota lake, a hole chopped through the ice. All I wanted to do after the sauna and dip was sleep. Fine memories of my youth. Now it is truly wonderful watching you, Nina, and watching your enthusiastic son as you enjoy a southern Finland winter. Ending with the two of you in your house, relaxed, is perfect. With my mug of hot, strong and milky coffee, a toast to Finland, Kippis!

    I love swimming in cold water too. I started because I wanted to improve my circulation, but I still get very cold and my toes and fingers freeze easily. I still swim though because I enjoy it. I love the message that not everything has to be about self-improvement. I think it's almost more difficult to allow yourself to enjoy life.

      I have been thinking I should get myself a pair of neoprene gloves and socks, this way I could swim for much longer, because I have the same, my fingers and toes are the first ones to get cold. Maybe you get gloves and socks too!

    • @ninasointu

      It can definitely be learned, just start by exposing yourself to cold water and gradually you'll notice a change. You don't need to be in water for long in the beginning, it can be just for a second, the key is to be consistent. Good luck! 😍

    Ice swimming isn't something that is likely to happen here in Southern Australia but I admire you for it. Dreaming of gardens in winter is one of my favourite things to do too. Within the next few weeks here my garden will go into survival mode because of the heat. Even daily watering will not help some of the plants because there will be very little humidity so they can't survive. Especially the soft herbaceous cottage plants. So I try to recreate the look but with hardier Mediterranean type plants and natives.

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  2 года назад +1

      I've read about the terrible heat waves! Last summer was extremely dry here too, as it didn't rain for 2 months. This is definitely a challenge every gardener is now facing, the climate is totally messed up. 😮

    When I was younger, after working out, I would enjoy relaxing in a sauna. Then I would stand in the cold shower. I wonder if that is similar ( no where near the same)? I know it seemed a great way to end the workout.

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  2 года назад

      Cold shower is indeed very similar! The difference is in the intensity of it. Usually the air around you, standing in shower is quite warm and when going for a swim outdoors the air around you will already be freezing. Plus when you immerse yourself into cold water, it will surround you completely, leaving no "breathing room" for anything else than just cold. If you have the possibility, try putting cold water into a tub, it will give you new sensations for sure! 🥶😍

Water is around 18 now, I suppose, so no ice:) they say it will be 15 or something in January and without practice it definitely will be hard for me. So I am slowly getting used to it. Had to google it afterwards, because I got a complete blackout while filming😅 As I have been swimming regularly for so long, I really can't separate what health benefits are thanks to just doing regular exercise or from eating healthy foods or from going to swim. Interesting, what are the health benefits of ice bathing? Here in California, people will lay in a bath tub of ice water for some health benefits too.

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  2 года назад +3

      Suomen Latu - the Outdoor Association of Finland describe the health benefits as following:
      - produces pleasure when beta endorphin is released from the pituitary gland
      - improves sleep when serotonin is released from blood vessels
      - improves immunity when immune function is activated
      - improves stress tolerance and enhances muscle recovery (cortisol)
      - the body burns fats more efficiently

    Hi Nina! Happy New Year!🎉 Thank you so much for your videos. I just found them and I’m so excited to see more. Like another commenter, Susan, I am also from Minnesota and also enjoy ice baths after sauna. Unfortunately, I live in a city and can only do it when I go up north to camp where they keep the lake open and sauna heated. Also, I was excited to think that I was beginning to understand Finnish but then I realized you must be speaking Swedish …. because one doesn’t just begin to understand Finnish😂😂 😂 Thank you so much ❤

      Wouldn't it be great if we all would learn new languages simply by starting to understand it all of sudden! I'd love that! 😁 Happy New Year to you!

    I don't know how people get used to ice bathing. I'm cringing away from the video. It would be nice to feel exhausted and relaxed though.

      Not everyone will. My mom would never ever swim in cold water, she won't even swim during in summer in Finland. 😁 She wants the water to be truly warm, not just "barely warm". 😁

    I’ve been planning to do more ice baths but where I live we have to cut a hole on the ice (lake), It’s a bit more of a hustle but I am going to try. Before that I used to swim in open sea (as a new year’s tradition). I love the feeling it brings me as well, so invigorating! Ps: are you Swedish? I am pretty sure I heard Swedish in the video 🤔

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  2 года назад +1

      You can keep the whole in ice open by covering it with a polyuretane lid, so then you don't need to dig it open every single time you want to go swimming. That makes the ice swimming life so much easier! And yes, I'm Finnish-Swedish, so I speak both of the languages in my every day life. 😁

    Have you found the ice water healthy in any way?

    • @ninasointu
      @ninasointu  2 года назад

      I have hard time pinpointing if I get other health benefits than just pleasure of having cold swimming as a hobby and how it makes me feel immediately after the swim. A healthy life consists of so many elements.
      But Suomen Latu - the Outdoor Association of Finland describe the studied health benefits as following:
      - produces pleasure when beta endorphin is released from the pituitary gland
      - improves sleep when serotonin is released from blood vessels
      - improves immunity when immune function is activated
      - improves stress tolerance and enhances muscle recovery (cortisol)
      - the body burns fats more efficiently
      - relieves the symptoms of rheumatism and asthma when ACTH hormone is released from the pituitary gland
      - relieves muscle and joint inflammation by increasing local blood circulation
      - invigorates metabolism and strengthens blood circulation
      - lowers basic blood pressure if you regularly go in cold water for more than 3 months

    I kept worrying myself sick that your son would slip on that slick deck and fall into the water! Not sure if there is any buoyancy in his thermo suit, but usually clothes will weigh people down dangerously in water. Please be careful!
