    Great video! Question for you - just to save time and some work couldn't you just remove one spark plug from each cylinder to get the engine to turn by hand? That way you don't have to remove the fuel tank.

      That is a great idea. I am sure that it would work but would just make turning it over a little more difficult. Maybe I should quit being a whimp and get in the gym. Thanks for the comment and the view!!!

      Richard Edwin not that it makes it any better but thankfully all the motor parts except the air cleaner trim got powder coated gloss black. Thankfully the trim piece was not damaged!!!

      S Meek - Ya think? Love it when guys have all Snap-on tools and then don't know how to use them.
      Looks like this guy works out of his garage, I wouldn't be taking my Harley to him based on his work in this video. I especially liked the part where he F'd up the allen head holding the front tappet block, then hammered in socket into it to remove it.
      Also loved when he dropped the trim piece for the air cleaner on the concrete. Bet he is a graduate of MMI school, what hacks the produce.

    Nice video! I did my Milwaukee 8 a few months back. Installed a Woods 22X with adjustable pushrods, jackpot header, S&S MK45 slip ons with a Power Vision tune. Bike runs awesome and pulls hard from right off Idle. I did not pull my tank, only took out the left side spark plugs. I also left the lifter block's alone and just reused the stock lifters holding them up away from the cam with magnets. I hope I don't have any problems with those plastic retainers! Easy swap using the Jim's cam bearing tool to pull and insert the new cam bearing. Pay special attention to the oil pump and cam plate bolt tightening sequence outlined in the service manual when reinstalling. Also check your cam washer thickness per spec. I was able to reuse the original washer.
    Good luck with that Red Shift Cam. I've seen some Good numbers coming from them.

      Sounds like you have a strong setup. But I will say that I love the cam. Although I did not get the bike on a dyno before the customer picked it up my smile dyno was happy when the front end tried to come off the ground during a test ride. Stay tuned for part 2!!!

    Here's a position for nex time. Make a list of tools needed for the job.
    Mention that we break the bolts then speed wrench to quench boogering. Have shop rug under work place.
    On reassemble note any silicone and/on anti-seize used

    There would be no harm in leaving the pump in right? I mean other than needing to change o ring but if low miles and not removing that o ring should be fine right? Amazing video by the way. Doing cam swap this weekend thanks to your video 👌

    Great Video, it helps out a lot!... question on adjustable Screaming Eagle push rods ( I know you probably will be talking about it on part2) how many flats should they be adjusted to on the M8?... any info is very much appreciated, thanks.

      I hate to give you this wishy washy answer but it all depends on the pushrods that you use. I used the S&S Quickee Pushrods and they get 24 Flats!

      Thanks for the view. I agree with you on the stuff hitting the floor. There was a lot of stuff going on with trying to work, talk, make sure I was in frame and all. But thankfully, as you will see in the install video, most of the stuff got powder coated.

    How often do you have to change the spark plugs that are in the head? And you have to remove the gas tank each time also to access them?

    Would I have to remove the pushrods and cam to replace only the oil pump and cam plate?

      You can technically remove the oil pump and cam plate with out removing the cam, lifters, and pushrods. I would recommend that you are very careful when you are in there as not to allow the cam to come out.

    Thanks for the vid. About to cut my pushrods.. nice to watch someone else do it first. Do I need to drain the oil before I open the cam chest? figured I would change the oil after putting a few miles on the new parts.

      No need to change the oil prior to doing the job but I would change it before riding. Dont want old oil touching your new parts. lol

      I was actually wondering if I needed to drain all the oil out first or not. I have since finished the job and learned about the engine a lot, and now I know that you do not need to drain the oil because it is a dry sump engine and very little oil resides in the crankcase or camchest. Thanks again for the video, it made a great reference combined with my service manual.

    This video is just what I was looking for. Thank you!
    I'm having same work performed on my 2017 RGS w/20k miles.
    The machanic is swapping lifters and suggested keeping the stock headers. I have RC components slip-ONs.
    He explained best to upgrade to heavy duty lifters and stock headers keeps the back pressure for low end torque.
    If aftermarket headers doesn't add much performance value keeping stock will save me a few $$$.
    I'm no machanic but in theory it makes sense.
    What are your thoughts?

      Ralph T I love the Vance and Hines Power Duals with those slip ons. Great low end torque without sacrificing top end power. Definitely look at upgrading the lifter cuffs and the cam plate/oil pump as well. Thanks for watching.

      Funny you mention V&H because that's what I had in mind to add to add to my upgrade package. The machanic then suggested to save the money. I'm going to rethink this before I have the work done.
      I was an early adopter of the M8. I purchased it in the fall of 2016. Within 500 hundred miles it was in for warranty work due to oil pump issues. The oil light kept coming on. Bike ran okay yet machanic discovered mental shavings.
      HD replaced oil pump and cam plate etc.
      Sat in the shop for two weeks.
      Very happy with it now.

      I have not used the Woods cam BUT I will say that the RS 468 was super impressive. The throttle response was crazy and the idle sounded like a big block Chevy. The 468 cam will be available on my website, www.fatheadcycles.com , on Monday!

      Currently over in Afghanistan, but I might just place an order from ya right before I come home next month. Do you recommend changing out the lifters at the same time since I'll already be in there? I always changed them on twin cams, but they had a lot more miles than my new M8

      The Lifters are a must replace in my opinion. They are the same questionable quality as the twin cams and you are right. While you are there eliminate as many problems as possible. The lifters will be up on the site this week. Thank you for your service.

      Zippers 468 all the way. I used them on my 2018 Road Glide Special Stage 3 build instead of the SE 498's. Everything except those and headers were HD. I used the FuelMoto 2-1-2 Jackpot Header, SE 4.5" Street Cannon mufflers, SE Ventilator a/c, Power Vision tuner, and everything else was HD. Ended up with 139TQ and 117HP. Runs like a beast!!!!!

    After watching this video I am left wondering why the Harley Davidson dealership charges so much in labor fees. They must be getting $200 an hour.

      If you owned any high end car the invoice actually explains it all.So you can agree or disagree,but they do tell you why the cost is what it is.So here it goes.Your not only paying for your parts and labor. Your paying for the lightning in the building.The Secretary,the coffee, computers that diagnose your shit.Training to train the tech's to use it.Basically to keep the company afloat.(No Bullshit!I basically seen this at the bottom of my invoice from BMW after getting an M3 serviced.Well not the company afloat thing,but everything else i mentioned)

    The truth is most Harley owners never have this type of work done. Most just change their oil in all three holes on the regular and that's pretty much all you need to do maintenance wish other than an air cleaner change, fuel filter swap now and then.
    You can do all the motor work in the world and your only gonna get so much out of them because of them not performance-based machines like sport bikes.

    If you look in the Harley-Davidson product catalog or online, the motor company recommends replacing the stock oil pump cover with the latest version when installing stage 2 and above. The Harley part number is 62400206 and it has a large seal on it that the stock oil pump cover does not have. If you're changing the cam you need to put in this cover, it is only $27. There is also a different torque sequence for the cam plate and oil pump available in a Harley Service Bulletin M1450.       If going to stage III or stage IV they want the whole pump replaced if built prior to 10/10/2017. I guess that means me. Looks like I budget another 700 bucks.

      ...also what happens if you have too much crankshaft round out??? you cant used the geared cams can you? shame HD uses cast cranks now :'(

      At this point in the M8's life the crank better not be out of round but I see your point. As of right now S&S does not offer an Easy start cam for the M-8. I installed the Red Shift 468 cam. The video will be up next week.

      i have the 2000 dyna forged crank and timken bearings on drive side ,put the s&s gears in runs like a top ,hate the cam chain setup

    Nice to come across this video , Subscribed! I ride a 2018 Road King Special and am wanting to put in the redshift 468. Ive got the service manual and other than a quality tq wrench id say im ready to to start ordering parts. Cant wait to watch the rest of the video... would you mind putting in the description of the part 2 all the necessary parts needed to complete the job? Also i guess i need to replace the tappets because i'm over the mileage threshold at 7000 miles? What tappet retainers are you going to use , s&s? I'm currently running the Bassani Road Rage 3 , Vo2 intake and an fp3 ( i hope Vance & Hinse can get me a tune to work with. ) Check out my buddies channel that im frequently on @blockheadmoto

      Hey man thanks for the view. I will def add all of the parts that I use in the description of Part 2. Tappets are a must so is replacing the inner cam bearing. I used the aluminum tappet cuffs from S&S. Good luck with the FP3. if it does not work I would go thundermax all the way.

    i would hate to see any of these assholes on here commenting, working on their own bikes. leave the poor guy alone. learn how to do it yourself instead then. and btw, cutting pushrod tubes is common practice. at least the guy has made the investment in good tools. how many of you have purchased a 3/16th socket head allen in a universal in a 1/4" drive? if you think this is crude then watch your local dealership handle your bike behind closed doors.

    I love all the comments from the peanut gallery criticizing the man's methods. If I wanted Steven Spielberg production quality, I'd go to a theater. If you haven't produced something better? Shut the hell up and go back to flying your toy airplanes.. some of us are busy wrenching on our bikes..

    Gas tank off just to get to the spark plugs? And I just thought the newer bikes might be a PITA to work on. No thanks...

      Luckily the gas tank comes off fairly quick and easy. I have a video elsewhere on the channel on how to remove the gas tank. Thank you for the view!

      I've pulled one off a softail, and it isn't hard at all. Just saying...to have to do that for plugs...man. I like taking a look at mine every so often, and that's just a PITA. And sure thing, thanks for posting.

      Why not just pull the plugs from the other side of the bike? Is there an advantage for pulling the plugs underneath the tank opposed to the other side?

      With near 50 years twisting wrenches, I'm not one to be negative without suggesting solutions.
      1st, please spend more time editing. We dont need to watch every bolt turn out of its hole. Also shaking the camera around to reposition is annoying. Edit out the junk before you publish. Watch John Maxwell videos. You will see a big difference. Looks much more professional.
      2nd, as a Harley owner I cringed every time you let parts fall to the floor. Those parts cost the customer money. Have some respect for them. I found masking tape to be a good helping hand. Holds parts in place until you can safely handle them and helps prevent scuffing.
      Hang in there. Your info is good, needed and appreciated.

      If u are talking about him dropping those tubes the SnS comes with new tubes. I watch J.M his videos use to be a lot better than they are now.
      Now this man is doing a much better job with his videos. He's showing us how to, I want a long video I want to see it all. Might watch it a few times. Don't care if he moves the camera as long as he shows me the proper way to do it. I think he did that!

    I finally figured out Harley owners. I could never figure out why people buy Harley’s other than to make noise, and look cool riding to the bar (which most do). RUclips finally gave me the answer. Harley’s are for shade tree mechanics and tinkerers. People who like to take things apart and try to improve things. Harley’s design is so antiquated it gives the owners plenty to improve, the after market gives them the parts, and now RUclips has given the the mechanically uninclined (such as myself) an idea of how It is done.
    Will I buy a Harley? No... I like riding thousands and thousands of miles on a reliable machine. A machine that is easy to maintain. But I do have new found respect for Harley riders. It’s just not for me.
