Prambanan was built by Rakai Pikatan from the Sanjaya dynasty, Medang Kingdom or Ancient Mataram. although many say the Sanjaya dynasty is actually related to the Syailendra dynasty which built the Borobudur temple. Prambanan was built in 850 AD, took 50 years to complete with 200k workers. At that time the Medang kingdom conquered Cambodia and made Prince Jayawarman II a prisoner in Java, here he studied culture, religion, architecture, etc. He returned to Cambodia as the puppet king of the Medang kingdom. Several hundred years later Angkor was created with structures influenced by Prambanan. The construction of Prambanan was a form of competition between Hinduism and Buddhism, including the intrigues of the royal family from the Sanjaya and Syailendra dynasties. Several hundred years later, natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions caused the royal capital to move from Central Java to East Java, both temples were forgotten, and a new dynasty emerged, the Isyana dynasty. The Isyana dynasty ruled from the 10th century to the end of 13th century and then the Kediri kingdom grew stronger, the famous king was King Jayabaya, legend says he could predict the future,He predicted the coming of Satrio Piningit and Ratu Adil to lead this nation to prosperity and justice.
Prambanan was incredible - massive towers, ancient ruins, and friendly people everywhere. Certainly a highlight of my trip! Anyone else been here? What did you think? 👀 Where should I visit next when I return to Indonesia? Let me know in the comments!
James, still in Jogja? There are more to see: * Take some jeep adventure trip to to the Merapi volcano and the surrounding village. * Get inside Jomblang cave for the "light of heaven". * Rice field trip on a bicycle. * Take a commuter line train and visit Surakarta, the hometown of President Jokowi. Enjoy!
Hello James, very good video and very entertaining. Gudeg is originally from Jogja, consist of jack fruit (nangka), cow skin which looks like jelly, tofu, Tempe, chicken, etc. unfortunately you didn't try the egg which quite specific called "telor pindang" kind of century egg but taste savory and bit sweet caused from palm sugar, color of the egg is dark brown.
26:26 Yes, that is Vinegar (Cuka). Cuka is pronounced like "Choo-kah"... Indonesian people usually pour a little bit Cuka into the soup of Bakso Dish...
Do you know what crazy thing about Prambanan Temple? There are used to be 240 temple in that area,.you can only see 18 left,.Indonesian government trying so hard to restore all of that, but the price is pretty steep. One small temple would cost your around $150,000 to build. Not to mention the expert in this area getting rarer and rarer. It takes around 1 year to restore 1 temple,.so theoritically, in this pace we need another Century or two to fully restore all of them,.so i hope you dont mind the steep ticket price, just think that as your contribution for temple maintenance and restoration project. Hope you enjoy Indonesia..
Oh my goodness - what incredible facts! Thanks so much for sharing that, I'll definitely pin this to the top of the comments. I think I read that there was 248 temples in all, but indeed I only saw a few of them restored. Historical events of course shaped the restoration, but in some ways, its even more interesting to be able to engage with the 'original' foundations (ruins) without them being interfered with too much. Regardless, a truly memorable day that I was glad to share with you all
I know western know how to cooking meat very well, but you may have to try empal gentong and sate kambing muda, good combination authentic food from Cirebon city. Come to Cirebon mate
This is a great idea! I struggled to get tickets for the dance at the palace owing to the schedule. I think they could do a better job of updating the times online

As a Hindu feel bad for the temples they did it everywhere in north India… they have a huge karmic debt which we are seeing today
How do you mean?
Stop crying on random videos. Have some self dignity.
Muslims has been restoring these temples....why feel so bad.
