Early 2000's we had a young regular at my local GW store who got dumped by his mum every Saturday, so she could go shopping while using the shop as a daycare. He didn't bring any miniatures with him, so would just hang around the tables watching everyone play or paint. Bit annoying for the staff to be responsible for him, but he wasn't a disruptive kid, so they let it slide. After a while the staff got irritated with him taking up a painting seat, so made a rule you had to be doing some hobby to have a seat. After that he'd make an effort to be building or painting something, but the twist was; he hadn't bought any of it. He would just pick a box off the shelf, take it to the hobby table and crack on. The staff missed it the first couple of times, but eventually caught him in the act. Kid genuinely didn't know it was wrong, and assumed we all just picked stuff we wanted and started working on it. Mum got snagged at 'pick up' that day and asked to pay for the product he'd taken. He got a store ban for a while, and the nickname 'nick-it'. Looking back, I feel bad for him. He just wanted to be involved.
poor kiddo, his mom obviously didn't care about his high interest in the hobby since she never bought him any models or paint and the kid had to resort to theft just to get anywhere near the models. when i was a kid my mom and dad would regularly take me to one of the only (if not thee only) GW stores in copenhagen through really busy rush hour traffic (with jams and all) to buy me a few warhammer's, paints, glues and brushes that would keep me busy for about a month. one of my most memorable christmas eves was the one where my parents bought a full army box set of greenskins for me - the one that includes one of each regiment in the entire army, including the wyvern with the orc boss on it (i believe his name is Azhag the Slaughterer) so i really feel pity for that kid. what kind of parent would dangle a carrot in front of their kid and then not allow him to have a bite, and then on top just use the store as a daycare. what a horrible woman. was my parents aware that the hobby was expensive as all hell? Yes. did my parents brush that fact off and let me enjoy the hobby anyway knowing how obsessed i was with it? Yes. call me a spoiled child, but to this day i am so grateful they allowed me to enjoy the hobby despite the costs. and no, my family is by no means rich. we're as middle class as it gets. my mom works a bank register and my dad is a plummer.
@@ZugzugZugzugson You're not spoiled if you're grateful. That's something I can't stand in movies and internet horror stories, when the parents force their kids into shit they're not interested in and call them ungrateful for not liking it. MEANWHILE when they see kids that have like, one thing that they really wanted, and then call them spoiled. Spoiled kids feel entitled to expensive things, you... you just had cool parents. Plumbers make a surprising amount though, so... there's that.
to be honest, the thievery problem of something like brushes and paints could probably be somewhat remedied if they didn't ask customers to pay like 24 English pounds (210 DKK where i am from) for a single fucking brush, let alone ask for 141 English pounds (Sterling) (1.234 DKK where i am from) for a complete brush set. now that being said, i have never stolen or even dared to steal anything from a GW store as i learned my lesson early in life when i attempted to steal some 10 DKK candybags from a candy store as a young knight (the age of about 11-12) and got busted for it. the candyman followed me out into the street and confronted me about it in a very calm manner. he was being very chill about it, he didn't even want the candy back, he just told me that this was the path to prison and that one day someone who isn't as tolerating as he is _would_ catch me red handed and end me in some real actual trouble... after telling me this, he simply turned around and went back inside and after about 5 minutes of considering his words, i actually went back into the store, gave him back the candy bags and apologized for stealing and it was like seeing christmas lights spark up in his eyes... i don't think he expected me to actually make amends for my action, and i don't think he had that happen very often, if ever, either.. like he obviously couldn't care less about the candybags, he was just happy that someone actually listened to him and learned their lesson. haven't ever stolen anything since that day, and i'm 30 years old now.
Some kindness can go a long way. I got caught stealing some snacks from a family owned store as a young kid and they ended up talking to me and offering me to “work“ there and get some pocket money. Mum and Dad agreed and I hung out mostly and helped out a bit and ended up working for them in proper capacity when I came of age. Taught me humility, morals, work ethic and friendship all when I was in the wrong.
The 'best' theft story I ever heard was when my sister worked at Game over the christmas period during the naughties. back then the stores would be chocker all day everyday for a month solid. One time this guy came in and asked to return a Gamecube bundled with games and accessories all sealed in shrink wrap and get a refund. My sister served him, checked the receipt, took the product and gave the guy his cash refund. Turns out he just strolled in the shop, took one off the shelf and got a refund using the receipt for the other one he had bought a few days earlier. Nothing my sister could have done, but I always admired the simplicity of it.
Really like the frequent uploads about GW mate, great channel. I spent the entire pandemic being a retail manager and it nearly cost me my sanity and self-esteem, your videos are very therapeutic.
How are they thieves? I won’t even ask you to explain because you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. They’re running a business. If you don’t like it don’t buy it simple. From my point of view it’s boarder lining dirt cheap. Where else are you finding entertainment for roughly $2 an hour this day and age.
I was once in my local GW when there was a guy sat at one of the painting tables. This was back when the store would provide paints. One of the staff noticed that he had picked several pots of the same colour from the case filled with paints for people to use and saw him tipping paint from one pot to another. Then he put the empty pots back in the case and the full ones into his bag. When the staff surrounded him and the manager ordered him to open his bag they found that as well as the stolen paint it contained a knife with a blade about a foot long. The excuse of the would be paint thief or why he had the blade was because he wanted to do some gardening the next day. Not only was he thrown out of the store but the staff contacted the shopping centre security to warn them about a guy wandering around with a huge knife.
It reminds me of my time in the company when we used to do regional conflict events. Basically a mini games day with tournaments of 40K fantasy and LoTR. My store always had a good attendance at these events. I remember my regional manager being amazed once when I turned up with a bus load of people for a Manchester one. Anyway one year we were at the reebok stadium in Bolton. Forgeworld also used to have a stand and did a lot of business I was in charge of normal retail that day and we were ran off our feet. Someone had gone up to the Forgeworld lot said they worked for GW Crewe and persuaded the FW staff to give them a thunderhawk gunship and to take it from there wages. There was no GW Crewe store at that time. The next week the entire region kept getting calls from the regional manager asking if we knew anything about it and if any of our staff had suddenly tipped up with a thunder hawk. 🤣
When I used to work in retail, I developed the “that’s a thief right there” skill.. damn good at it.. everybody I thought was thieving was. My manager called me the store bloodhound.. caught one teenager, came in wearing skinny jeans n white hoodie.. thin as a rake, tried leaving the store much larger than he entered.. 6 pairs of jeans 2 jogging bottoms 4 t-shirts 2 extra hoodies and a puffy jacket.. no one else in the store noticed. When he was in the changing rooms, I told my boss and he called the police and what would you know they knew the lad.. been caught a lot.. some people never learn or change.
I went to Gamesday with a group of friends at the National Indoor Arena back in 2001. As expected it was extremely busy with people milling between the different games tables and exhibits. On the edges of the main hall were a series of pop up stores selling the old style metal miniatures on racks. I stupidly made the comment “oh it would be really easy to steal something” noticing that there was only sales assistant dealing with over 50 customers. One of our friends saw this as an opportunity. He approached the most crowded sales stand and crouched down towards the Eldar section which was placed furthest away from the eyes of the sales assistant. He returned back to where we were sitting with the Fire Dragon Phoenix Lord and 3 boxes of Fire Dragons. We couldn’t believe it and what made it worse he expected us to laud him for his thieving efforts. I’ve only returned to the hobby in the past two years and an odd the occasion I visit my local GW store whilst on duty as a copper. The fellas working there find it quite amusing as I talk them about my Bloodbowl Teams and Sisters of Battle army. I’m also conscious with me being there in uniform puts off a lot of offenders that might potentially thieve from the store. I’m not sure whether my two anecdotes are linked at all that my former friend led me into a career if fighting crime 😉
I had a similar experience in my youth at a GW - I'd showed up to a 'bring and battle' day on a Sunday with a mate of mine. I was busy at the table gaming away and assumed he'd gotten into his own game. Didn't see him much. When we left at the end of the day he opened up his bag to reveal basically an entire metal Chaos Space Marine army comprised of blister packs that he'd been stealing throughout the day. I was horrified. In hindsight I was a bit dumb. He kept walking up to me saying things like 'Hey, is Kharn any good?' and 'Are Plague Marines a Chaos thing?' then he'd wander off again as my attention would be distracted by the game I was involved in. I stopped hanging around with that guy not too long afterwards.
A long time ago I was working in GW and I noticed 2 kids (approx 15 yrs old), trying to steal a Warhammer Hardback Rule book. As I was very protective for the shop and stock I decided to leg it after them as they escaped the front door. When they reached the top of the street (with me in chase), the street opened up to a main square where the thieves split and I had to quickly choose one to catch. So I made my choice and did catch one of them. When he said he didn't have the book and his friend did, I escorted him back to the shop to sort the situation. At the shop myself and the other assistant, questioned the kid and demanded the book back or them to pay for it. He said he would go and find his friend to get the book back. As we knew if we let him go out the store, we would never see either of them again or the book, I suggested the kid leaves his school bag and his leather jacket with us, goes and gets the book and when he returns, he will get his bag and jacket back. He agreed and about 15 mins later, came back with the book. With that, we told him to sit tight while we called the Police. The joys of small wins :) Another story I have is that approx 3 years later I was promoted to Store Manager and moved southwards to a store that was failing. It was my first Managerial position and another member of staff was to join me from another store. When I arrived I checked the store out and reported a great deal of Over Stock of lead miniatures (yes it was that long ago), that would never move, in the stockroom. With that GW Head Office informed me to list all the stock in the next couple of days and report everything I reckoned was said Over Stock. As there was only two members of staff and we had to do all store duties, to do a 'Stock take' so quickly was a tall order. Two days later an Area Manager arrived in the store and I received a written warning for it not being done! If I hadn't of mentioned it - I would have not received the warning, but I was only trying to report information about my new position and store and had NO Managerial training prior to this! Definately not the way to treat your staff! Absolute Scumbags!!! :(
Just listened to all your GW stories. Please continue. It is important to know what kind of company we are supporting with our money and which values are importan to them. Your contribution helps a lot to get the entire picture, which we wouldn't get just by reading the White Dwarf.
I remember one day way back to 2008 or so, my city's store had a tournament and obviously some people came over that were not part of the ussuall community built around it. One of those guys, at the end of the tournament, packed up his army on one of the big cases (the old green ones with the 40k eagle) and as he was going out he turned, waved back saying "Good bye everyone, great event". he picked up ANOTHER case from the floor in front of the intro table (the empty ones for sale) and simply left. Me and another two guys just looked at each other in silence for a couple of seconds until one said "Did he came with two, or one case?", then we looked towards the intro table and it was clear that one was missing. We told the manager and he simply gave us a sigh and continued working on the closure. Next day i came back, the cases were moved way back into the store, near the backroom door.
Hey, if you ever pass the IT tech at work, give them a hello. I’ve been a technician at schools and it gets a bit lonely as you’re treated as not a teacher and not a cleaning staff or admin. Can mean a lot. If you’re genuine, we will remember. Trust me.
Used to work for a fruit based mobile phone store that changed its name to just vowels. Apart from the display phones, all the boxed phones had to be kept in a cage out back. One of the staff members there was taking them out the cage, going to the toilet with them and pushing up the ceiling tiles and hiding them there. The manager would check everyone’s bag leaving the store, so this guy would wait until the managers day off and get away with 3 or 4 phones a time. When the stock checks were done and it was evident we were really down on phones, we naturally checked the cctv and there was loads of footage of him going to the toilet with a phone but not coming out with it. The idiot hadn’t realised you could see him doing part of the crime. I wasn’t there when police came to arrest him, but according to the manager he tried to claim innocence because you didn’t actually see him leave with any of the stock. I’ve got another story that I’ll put in another comment
so I would guess stealing from GW is like stealing plastic which is worth LESS than the paper box and the ink that's printed on it. Its mind boggling that how much money they are asking for basically worthless stuff based on ideas that they stole from other franchises
I went through a phase of being massively into shoplifting back in my teenage years. When GW in Manchester was a little store on Brown Street, I absolutely pillaged that place!
The area manager story is an urban legend that I heard way back in the late 90’s. As to my own stories I have hundreds over a 12 year career with GW. Funniest one was in Watford, kid had a jacket on and was leaning up against the gaming table (on white cupboards not in the newer table designs). There was a game of BB going on it was fairly raucous. I saw a small GW bag hanging out his inside pocket, so as per the 10 coms I asked him enthusiastically what he’d brought. He then proceeded to pull blister after blister out his pocket and admit he’d stolen them. Never admit anything kids lol
I haven’t been into a GW store for years, only came back to the hobby last year after 25 years away. Genuinely love this channel, please keep these stories going A good friend of mine use to work for GW, he often tells me stories of how when new stuff was released he would have to build and paint it in his own time and unfortunately has put him off of painting. Luckily he and I still play blood bowl on a regular basis
Last time I went was around a year ago when they started their free mini at the start of the month if you go to one and I happened to be by one with some time to spare.
I've been asking that question about the ads for ages. I worked on the assumption they worked the way you just described, so let them play on creators I like, skip them on creators I don't really care about. Glad to know I haven't been wasting my time!
I work in an arcade. A decent amount of thieving occurs but honestly that's not the half of it. People just disrespect the venue in general, and it's impossible to catch a good majority of it because you're the only person running the machines and there's LOTS of things to do. When you witness that kind of unabashed disregard for another's property so frequently it starts to really affect the way you perceive the common public.
I worked at a hardware store and a large toy chain for a short while. Toy chain had small stuff being stolen constantly like Hot Wheels and nerf darts. Hardware store calculated that theft was a smaller problem then environmental degregation from the stuff outside, and there was a 4:3 ratio of losses from staff theft vs customer theft. I can believe it given my coworkers.
First time I got stolen from when I worked at GW, dude comes in, shoplifts a Blood Angels codex into his bag while I wasn't looking and then asks for a refund without a receipt. I was stupid and gave him the money. I felt like crap that I fell for that afterwards. Another time, the then newly released metal blisters of the Tyranid Hive Guard and Zoanthrope were stolen from the new release section during a busy mega battle Sunday. I just so happens that we didn't sell any of them anyways. Not a week later, a bunch of kids come in asking for help to build these super complex metal models. We interrogated them on where they got them because we knew we had sold zero of those models in the week they'd been released. They told us their uncle bought them for them somewhere. Ha, likely story. But we didn't actually have any hard proof they stole them so we just told them to get lost and banned them from the store. One of the best ways to prevent shoplifting is to keep everything visibly well stocked and know what the stock levels of product is at a glance. I always prided myself on a well stocked wall that was flush to the edge of the shelf or peg so I'd know at a glance what has been sold and what has been shoplifted. I'd caught or prevented shoplifters on two occasions because of this. One time a kid and his mom came into browse. During our customer interaction he talked a bunch about how much he needed Space Marine Scouts in his army. They shopped around a bit more and when he came up to the till to pay there was a bunch of Space Marine box sets on the counter that he wanted to buy except the blister of scouts he talked about earlier (at that time the plastic scouts hadn't been released yet) I looked at the wall of blisters that I had freshly restocked and noticed a divot on the peg where the scouts would be disrupting the completely flush pattern of other blister packs on the wall. Then I looked at his hoodie pocket that had a bit of a bulge that could possibly be a blister pack of scouts. If I really wanted to get him into trouble I'd wait for him to step out of the store before stopping him and asking him to empty his pockets. But I was feeling nice that day and since his mom was there paying for his stuff I saw this as an opportunity to have some fun with him and try to get a bigger sale out of this situation. After I rang everything through the till and told him the total, I asked "Was there anything else you wanted to buy today?" He said, "No, this is all I'm getting today." Then I looked directly at his pocket and in the happiest and cheeriest voice I could, I asked, "Did you want to buy those scouts today as well?" Embarrassed, he pulled out the blister of scouts from his pocket and said, "Oh, yeah! I wanted to buy these too." His mom's eyes went wide and she gave him the "Death Stare." She, also being incredibly embarrassed that her son was trying to shoplift from the store, paid for everything including the scouts and when they left I smiled as I her her chewing out her son for trying to shoplift. On another occasion when I was managing a store, my staff and I were noticing a rash of seemingly random product go missing in the shop after 40k Friday night. Our suspicions were on this one kid who was in the shop regularly when the stuff went missing. Lacking hard proof (we hadn't actually seen him take stuff but we had noticed a box go missing when he was near it just before he left) the next day when he was in the shop I took him aside and asked him about the box that went missing and he adamantly denied knowing anything about it. He even went as far as opening up his bag to show me he had nothing in it outside a bit of homework. I told him I believe him and trust him and let him stay in the shop. Later that day I restocked the shop and went for lunch. When I came back, I noticed a blister missing on the wall and asked my staffer if he had sold that item. My staffer said no and then we noticed the kid we had suspected of shoplifting building that exact same model at the hobby table. We asked him where he got that and he said he's had those pieces all this time. I asked him to open up his bag and inside was the crumpled up packaging of that blister. Caught red handed he exclaimed, "Oh SHIT!" Because he had forgotten to hide the evidence better. Because he hadn't left the store with it (legally here, you can't detain anyone for shoplifting until they leave the store with it.) , all I could do was ban him from the shop.
Not GW related, but your story about the missing money reminded me of a story. In the late 90s, I worked at a gas station. On one evening shift, I suddenly felt very ill and asked my coworker to watch the front while I went to the bathroom. I was in there for nearly an hour before I finally felt well enough to come out. I thanked my coworker and finished my shift. The next day I got called in by the store manager. $200 worth of scratch off lottery tickets had gone missing during my shift the night before. With no evidence and no confessions, she had to fire me and my coworker. Fast forward a few months, I stopped in one day to buy a pack of cigarettes and the manager called me into her office. Apparently my former coworker confessed to her friend, who still worked there, that she had stolen the tickets. The manager offered me my old job back, and I told her what I thought she could do with her job offer and left.
Love it, I’m a bar tender and you said you were too so I don’t need to tell you the kinda stuff people pull to get out of a tab. Boss man found a guy hiding under a truck lol
I remember Games Day 91 when it was still held at The Assembly Rooms in Derby. They had big racks full of blister packs and staff stood raised up behind them who'd reach over to deal with purchases. It was really crowded and clearly and lot of people found it very easy to pocket blisters but with looking down on the crowd the staff would occasionally point at someone and then security would push in, grab them and drag them away.
Really insightful content - thank you! Personally, I feel you’ve given your old manager too much rope mate. You’re clearly a good person who sees tries to see the best in people, but the little things you’ve disclosed: ‘you’ll never be a manager’, ‘why did you stop to buy us coffee after the bank run?!’ and this latest interrogation over the fifty quid which went missing, and was later found. Shaking my head. I would have blown a gasket with him. GW seems to attract this clique of nerds who get a micron of power and it totally goes to their heads!
To be honest, with GW being a shit-storm of anti-consumer practices, us fans need some positive stories from the hobby, Northern Exile is providing this when no-one else can. Plus, as a older gamer, these stories remind me of the good times I've had at a GW store. So thank you to Northern Exile. Also, I have to point out that shops/corporations have insurance to cover their loses due to theft. I remember, back when I was at uni, the owner of the shop I worked at bitching that his insurance rates were greater than the cost of the items being stolen from his shop. And feth me, £2 ph back in the 90's, feth man, I was doing a paperround in 94 that was paying that.
That may be true But you are ultimately just hurting the managers more then the company. Thieving is not something you should encourage or practice. It is just wrong.
@@notknightbean I agree thieving is wrong, morally and legally, even from a corporation as soulless as GW. Plus it gives companies a reason to increase prices, which I will always dislike. And completely agree that at the end of the day, it's the managers, plus their staff, who are the one paying for this. Which is made even more unfair by knowing the company will have insurance covering these situations
@@Dwarficus I agree completely, but the reason for the increase costs will be a increase in the companies insurance rate, thus they will shift the costs onto the customer, and knowing GW creative accounting they will use it to raise the prices well past that rate. Don't give them more ammo by stealing.
Best one was when i was a key timer in a store when at uni. Guy comes in wanting to return a Lord of the rings Balrog as it was 'damaged'. The full timer at the time was dealing with him, lets just say said staff member was a bit 'highly strung'. So the guy has no receipt of course and it's 'broken', missing a wing. He would not let up 'sorry you have no receipt' was the reply to all his moaning, this went on for about 15mins 'i want my money back, you are selling crap products etc' eventually he stormed off and the staffer went out back and at the top of his voice shouted 'F*****ING W****NKER' then came back into the shop floor said 'sorry about that in a very calm voice and carried on working as if nothing had happened XD' Truth is this bloke had stolen the Balrog, broken its wing off the sprue and was trying to pull a fast one. Its one of my best memories working for GW. Feel free to share this story.
I read a story from a gw employee once that said his missile launcher marine would always disappear from the demo table. Always just the launcher marine
Was working til at a gas station and watched a guy in sweatpants stuff a 40 down his pants. He walked towards the counter and right on by, out the door. I hopped the counter, opened the door, yelled "Hey!" and stood in the doorway watching as the guy started running and attempted to jump over a row of mulch bags stacked up about chest high. I heard a loud pop followed by blood curling screams. Dude had not landed his jump successfully. I turned around, walked back in and called an ambulance for the guy before going to check on him. No customers were there at the time and I only spent 6 minutes with the guy until the cops showed up and I went back to work. It was another 47 minutes before a customer entered the store. I remember those specific times because I had a regional manager come see me a few days later and chew my ass out for leaving the store to check on the guy. I called off the next day and spent it job hunting.
:) lookin forward to some juicy stories. Also when companies don’t pay their employees enough…the employees sometimes figures out how to make up for that loss in other ways… I was a manager at a few blockbuster videos and def saw this trend..anyhoot…starting the vid 🍻
Dog, remember the legend of CSRs buying used games on the cheap, giving them to friends, and reselling them for store credit at the other stores to then buy new items and return for cash? I was managing a store when that legend went around as explanation for when BB revamped the whole used game system.
A GW employer dropped his super glue pot on the floor...learnt down with one hand....put his head on the table and super glued his face to the table, someone in the store walked out with an army box under his arm !
Thanks for the Vid, it's good to hear genuine life stories. As a poor kid I was shit & as a moderately successful adult I seek out the one's that reminds me of myself & attempt to make the world a better place...from the states & been holding down since 2nd ED...
I accidentally packed up the store copy of the rulebook from the local Games Workshop in Grapevine, TX years ago. When I noticed it in my bag at home I felt awful. I returned it the next week on the normal gaming night. The staff was very understanding.
Two Flagship stores. Two stories about Theft. One a bit like yours. 200 quid went missing from safe and a staff member got fired even though im pretty sure it wasn't him as he was a super stand up bloke who i still know to this day. ( i was key time during the period so hadn't been involved with cashing up yet and was safe from suspicion). Other one was a BRAND new flagship store and we were running a big game. I was full time in this one. Back then we let the kids chuck their bags/cases under the gaming table (they had to go somewhere) and we noticed a couple of kids were acting a bit suss. I went under the table under the pretence of finding a piece of scenery for the game and these kids bags had loads of squad boxes in them. We busted the kids and watched their faces turn whiter than White Scars armour. Personally i would have detained them and called security/police but that was the managers call and we let them go and told them never to come back.
I worked in retail for years, and the whole do not stop a shop lifter, its not worth your life was bull, it went against you when stocktaking. So its get bollocked for chasing shop lifters and get bollocked for crap stocktake lol.
That happened to me! I'll explain in another video. But my stock check drove me to drink. Like I'd log ALL the stolen gear and head office would still assume I was giving it all away when the inventory missing is the inventory I told them was stolen. Crazy.
I was in our local one day when someone attempted to nick a newly released character model. There was about 5 of us in the store and that included the guy who was in to cover the store for the day, and my friend who was speaking to the staff member. The staff member noticed the pack was missing from the shelf and announced it to everyone, and knew he hadn't sold any copies of the model yet, so started to look for it in the store. It was found placed on top of some boxes under the gaming tables, and the two other people in the store ( who were both teenagers) promptly left the store after it was found. It was pretty obvious that one of them had attempted to take it, and we ended up discussing how someone could have a set of balls on them to try it on the models day of release.
Spent ten years catching shoplifter for a big box store. Spotting thieves before they steal is part skill part art. Caught well over 1000 during that time. Internal theft was always the worst because of the betrayal of trust.
I remember buying a few cheap boxes of space marines nib at a car boot sale nearly ten years ago, and the guy said he’s got more at home and I was like “cool” and he gave me his number. Met up again once in my city and bought some more stuff (pretty much half price) The thing that got me realising what was going on was he never wanted to meet at his house, it was always from a roadside and he told me he could get anything I was after if I let him know what I need.
An ex GW store manager told us some real horror stories of how bad they got treated, and how badly they got paid, and said is basically why 'kids' run the shops as you can't run a house or family on the wages
I worked for games workshop 1996 to 2000 ish and saw people steal all the time. Sometimes you would know the person couldnt afford it but some of them just did it for kicks. A fellow staff member chased a kid down the shopping mall and grabbed his bag and got into trouble with the police. When it was a customer who you spent a lot of time with it hurt pretty badly. There were a lot of awkward customers that we were almost social workers for and these guys stealing something killed my day.
I worked at Toys R Us in 2014 as a teenager and we had alot of thieves. Mainly in the baby section lol. Alot of crackheads stealing prams and so on for the children they never wanted anyways aha. Eventually anything over $50-$100 depending on category would get wrapped in a spider security tag thing. Any tampering or distance away from the receiver would cause a massive screeching siren sound. One time we had some bogan crackhead steal alot of baby formula and grab a $500 bike off the rack and drive out the back door all on security and caught within a hour. Some people steal for so long they think they are invincible, or high on meth. I got accused at every single job I worked at but never stole. One time I got into some slight trouble as we had a pile of defective or broken toys in the staff room, and it would have transformers and opened pack of cards and so on. My previous manager would always be like "yeah you can take that" if I asked Anyways I took a huge bunch of cards and I was walking out, some Melvin who I kind of liked and hated as well was like "what's in your pocket" and I'm like "Pokemon cards from the broken pile" my normal manager wasn't there that night and my teenage mind thought "this will be fine I'll just let him know next shift". I walk out and yeah that was it. Next meeting they told me "oh we have a new rule to sell those broken goods at discounted prices" "we are fine with you taking but you should of asked' and I said "oh sorry should of known better" and then toys r us went under immediately after that, stopped getting shifts for months and yeah. I hate that kid he would always do anything to the T and suck up, dob on me for not doing one thing the right way and after we both would do nightfill he would review what I did and go dob on me for putting one box to high on the overstock. We where equals by the way, causal workers he was 16 I was like 17. I hate that kid to this day.
It was for my niece anyway she loved Pokemon and girls sorts of toys and I would grab the old displays and ask to take them. That same kid that I hated that I described, actually went to the same hobby store where we played Warhammer and that. I used to find he would suck up then actually aha he's always been a suck up. It was just chance we ended up working in the same store.
Sorry just adding, I needed the money as well, he had all of his needs paid for and given to him by his parents. Like he had a flat given to him, I'm sure he might of paid a bit for it but anyways. After this I worked at a hippy salt lamp incense store and my first boss was fantastic, he was a older gay guy and the sweetest guy ever. He didn't care about protocol as long as the daily targets where met and the people who came in had a good experience. Eventually I'm assuming higher ups hated that, replaced him with two demon woman that never gave me shifts. Would run competitions for who could sell the most, and the staff would delicate me to stocking so I had no chance of selling anything. Eventually got silently laid off. I hate every single one of them to this day, I really needed that money. Mummy and daddy didn't pay for anything for me. I couldn't meet the board for my parents and they kicked me out. Anyways that store has long gone under and most of their lives have turned for the worst, as they should they where complete assholes. I moved in with some mates and went to uni got a qual, then went to my local college and got Two diplomas. Sorry kind of venting lol, it's so weird how you think back on your old jobs when your younger and you still have the same rage with problems that occured during that time.
Love the videos Sir, keep up the good work. Definitely interesting to hear your stories about GW. Happy holiday and I joined the discord so perhaps I’ll run into you there. Cheers
When I was small I once got accused of being a thief in a GW shop and was searched When your a naive 10 year old ,a person who works in a store feels like the police so when they want to search you think you have no choice about it and they proceeded to search me in the middle of the store in front of everyone when they discovered I had nothing on me from that day onwards, it felt like I was the one they thought had stolen goods I would be watched all the time from the moment I walked into the store, I still get anxious about it even today walking into a GW store (which isn't helped by staff members coming up and asking the moment I walk through the door if I need help)
dude the fact that you can't walk into a GW store without immediately being antagonized by a staff member there always bothered the shit out of me, like dude just give me like 5 minutes to look around, i might not know specifically what i am looking for before getting into the store. maybe im just browsing things with the intention of getting what speaks most to me at that given point in time, but these fucking sponges literally jump at you the second the front door opens and act as if you had pre-planned your purchase from home down to the last detail. the worst part, that even when you tell them that you are just gonna browse for a few minutes before making a purchase, they just won't leave you alone. in one instance i told the staff member i was gonna have a looksie and i kid you not; less than a minute passed by before he came back asking if i had made up my mind.
@@ZugzugZugzugson I used to start talking to them about non-Games Workshop games like Battletech or D&D or a Mantic game or something. They get confused and awkward. It's amusing, but it still doesn't get rid of them sadly. It's one of the reasons I avoid the store at all costs and just buy online from a third party if I want something GW.
Talking about people nicking stuff etc, in Spain if the box aint sealed in the shop, don't buy it. I ordered an ork apocalypse big box from a shop in Talavera (the town where that Nazzeee wore those ultra right symbols) and someone had gone into the box and snipped bits off pieces on the sprues (arms of some Killa Kans). Also another shop in central Madrid (big ork box), opened it up and the most valuable weapons are missing and snipped off the sprue, went back next day for a refund and they didn't make it easy, anyhow got a replacement box.
Right I am here because of your GW story's....initially (no need to talk about the ex finance video but I will be sticking around). I joined the hobby a few months ago during the beginning of the whole "boycott GW, GW sucks, they don't pay enough they don't do enough bla bla bla" and I'm the kind of person that prefers first hand information. You provide exactly that.
Not in a shop, but a bus garage, my old boss had me help out a thief. Basically we had a van every month come to pick up our ruined batteries, these things on buses are huge, and the gaffer saw a van drive in and one bloke get out trying to pick the batteries up, but he's struggling, so my gaffer called me over and told me to help him load up the batteries, so I did and I even asked where the normal two lads were, he didn't respond, probably coz he couldnt speak english, so I went back to the gaffer and said, somethings wrong here, this bloke seems dodgy, oh he's fine the gaffer said go back and help him, so I went over sheepishly and loaded the last few on, he drove off, and of course three hours later the real van turns up. The gaffer did try and pin it on me coz im on cctv helping him, and I was up for a final written warning coz I wasn't accepting responsibility, but lucky for me, someone else heard him tell me to help out, and so it all got brushed aside in the end, but that was the final straw for me and that twat of a boss.
So when I worked for a supermarket a few years ago, we almost had a manager get seriously injured. To make a story short, some louts had come into the store and immediately raised suspicion. Suspicion was founded as they ended up knicking a TV and running out the store, manager runs after them (big no no) and chases them round the back of the store. No CCTV cameras at that part of building, guy puts down the TV pulls out a blade and threatened the manager. Thankfully manager has sense and backs off. Could have been a whole lot different if lout just straight up shanked the bloke. Whole store had training after that, reminding everyone that nothing in the store is worth more than your life.
I worked in carphone warehouse upto the pandemic and was made redundant, about 6 months before we had a offer to get fifa 21 or CoD MW (2019) when you got certain contracts. We would keep about 4 of each game and one day a fifa and CoD game was missing, they where kept in a safe and all staff had access but I was accused right away because I had been talking about just buying CoD. Fast forward a week and the new guy gets the sack turned out he had posted the 2 games on Facebook marketplace, I spoke to my manager and told him I either get an apology or I walk out right then at peak time (xmas).
I have had models go missing in a GW store. I was playing my dark eldar and when I was packing I found that three wyches were missing form the pile of the dead on the side of the table. I think I know "whodunit" but I couldnt prove it so, yah watch your models kids.
Used to work for a UK clothing retailer that shall remain nameless …. But rhymes with text….. Working on the fitting rooms is usually a pretty demoralising task, normally you get honest people that want to try whatever, they like it or not and then buy it or not….. HOWEVER!!!!!! Used to get the odd person who would want to try on the whole shop…. now these people are pretty hard to keep an eye on because they’d want to hand you items they don’t want and you’d need to put it back on the shelves or racks etc and stock would tend to go missing more often with these people … The amount of times after the customer had left and you’d check the fitting room they’d been in and seen the “remains” of what the customer didn’t want is actually horrific! Found old underwear that customers would “trade in” for new (steal) the stores, old trainers, socks, trousers, you name it (clothing wise) guarantee a fitting room member of staff has seen it been “traded” …… honestly ruins your day because you are left feeling you couldn’t do that simple tasks! Love the videos man! Keep them up!!! 😁 PS, I don’t recommend or condone going into clothing shops and “trading” your old clothes for the shops new clothes 🌚
Its not GW but I used to do nights in my local sainsburys when back from uni during the holidays around 15years ago and the chap who did the BWS (Beers, wines and spirits) told me once he put out 6 bottles of Jack Daniels one night. By 11:00am (3hrs after opening) the next morning all of them had gone off the shelf. When they checked stock that had gone through the tills, not a single bottle was accounted for. Point is, somethings are just prized by these bastards and good luck stopping them as you can't have eyes everywhere at once.
I helped a good buyy in his store sometimes, when a person enterd the store that looked suspicious i went to them stared at them some sec and asked if i could help them and, then i just would be standing next to them all the time........
You wanna hear a thieving story, I experience at least a dozen thieving stories minimum everyday when I go to work. You don't believe me, try driving a bus and see for yourself how many horses rears you'll run across when it comes to paying the fare box. An saying the word parasites in my presence can set me off on a tirade that would make the most hardened man blink. So you know what my friend, I understand 100% where you're coming from brother.
Sorry for skipping the ad on this video. It was on a cliff hanger and 1.50 seconds. But i do occasionally fall to sleep to your nattering so you get the pennies from that 🙃
I knew a guy who had a smack head friend that would go into GW take painted models from the intro table and run out of the store, that guy would then buy those models to nothing
Bruh’ You could have worked at frikking Willy wonkas. Dun’ make you interesting to hear. Your panache, your delivery, your presentation. That makes it interesting. Also “if you skip ad’s” so would I. Frigging great answer. I play 30k mainly. Used to co-run a club and we had people trying to swipe our books. Models. All of it. Can’t say why. I mainly like HH now, but that has to do with 7’th and 8’th experience. Please keep going. F’ the haters.
Now that i think about it. There is another one that comes to mind. this is when models disappear from demo tables. Metal WHFB Dogs of War. So FULL metal units on the table, decently painted. They were DECIMATED. The pike men and Long Drongs Slayers lasted abotu a week before we didnt have enough to play a demo game. One here two there, it didnt take long. Theiving gits.
people will steal anything to be honest and as you said if it happens a lot or if someone steals the wrong thing you suspect everyone which is not nice or the way to go.
I let the ads play, but i skip if it's something too obnoxious or long. My first purchase was the Know no Fear set and for my surprise it didn't come sealed. When i noticed that it also didn't come with Noxious Blightbringer, i wanted to return it and get Dark Imperium instead, but would they accept it? It turns out they did and didn't even bother to check if everything was alright with it. Later i've learned this 7:20 and understood why they didn't bother... You know, it would be cool to hear about funny moments or the coolest armies that people painted, with the sets that you sold.
@@cameonjackson478 Ooooh well telling people to click I can see that not being good. Asking them to not skip them is something else. Good to know either way, its good that I've got good viewers looking out for me :)
Prefer LGS over GW stores for playing because location/size of the stores, but my experience at the stores were always positive. The absolute worst was maybe the employee was... apathetic? But never rude or mean.
There’s stairs outside my work that don’t have a camera and the amount of times I’ve tripped meth heads who are trying to steal stuff down them is ridiculous
A lot of it is young kids with no money. It's an expensive hobby and unless you come from a rich family, you likely could never get anything. I knew of a few very young kids that used to nick loads blisters of metal minis. If it wasn't for that none of them ever would have had an army. Not saying it makes it right, but in a lot of cases it's poverty and people just wanting to be part of the hobby. They will never have a chance of buying anything, at least not at any decent rate to ever have an army ready for any one edition of the game, so they pinch mini's. It was pretty rampant when I was kid, every other guy was nicking minis to supplement their armies. Now everyone has grown up and has their own money though, it's probably dropped off a lot. I imagine you will still have young kids with no money nicking minis though, the cycle will always continue.
I use to Go to the Manchester store in the 90s. Up to the bombing. there was this group of lads who was there every games night. They was in a click with the store owner and staff. Bff's they all was. we'll I seen these lads stealing 40k second edition. Blood bowl second edition and other things codexs ect. Just use to stick it in there backpack's play games all night. And leave and come back. And carry on. Even one of them became a member of staff. They use to bully me so I have not forgotten there face's. Was going to tell the manager what they had done. And the bombing happen. Now he's a famous and runs his own miniature painting company. and has been on RUclips and Facebook talking about his company. 💯😂
Just one comment to story. You said you were told by manager: if someone with gun want to take stock just allow him because this models are worth nothing. This is only partially true. Reason they want you to do nothing has got something to do with public image. Just imagine how much company image would be hurt if you get shot in shop. I am working for PP booking company and in my case would be robbery on cash, yet they still tell me exactly same they told you: just let robbers take cash. Besides all this Shiite is insured 😊😊
Good story man. Thanks
poor kiddo, his mom obviously didn't care about his high interest in the hobby since she never bought him any models or paint and the kid had to resort to theft just to get anywhere near the models.
when i was a kid my mom and dad would regularly take me to one of the only (if not thee only) GW stores in copenhagen through really busy rush hour traffic (with jams and all) to buy me a few warhammer's, paints, glues and brushes that would keep me busy for about a month.
one of my most memorable christmas eves was the one where my parents bought a full army box set of greenskins for me - the one that includes one of each regiment in the entire army, including the wyvern with the orc boss on it (i believe his name is Azhag the Slaughterer) so i really feel pity for that kid.
what kind of parent would dangle a carrot in front of their kid and then not allow him to have a bite, and then on top just use the store as a daycare. what a horrible woman.
was my parents aware that the hobby was expensive as all hell? Yes. did my parents brush that fact off and let me enjoy the hobby anyway knowing how obsessed i was with it? Yes.
call me a spoiled child, but to this day i am so grateful they allowed me to enjoy the hobby despite the costs. and no, my family is by no means rich. we're as middle class as it gets. my mom works a bank register and my dad is a plummer.
@@lonecolamarine good point, thanks :)
hahahah this story is awesome
to be honest, the thievery problem of something like brushes and paints could probably be somewhat remedied if they didn't ask customers to pay like 24 English pounds (210 DKK where i am from) for a single fucking brush, let alone ask for 141 English pounds (Sterling) (1.234 DKK where i am from) for a complete brush set.
now that being said, i have never stolen or even dared to steal anything from a GW store as i learned my lesson early in life when i attempted to steal some 10 DKK candybags from a candy store as a young knight (the age of about 11-12) and got busted for it.
the candyman followed me out into the street and confronted me about it in a very calm manner. he was being very chill about it, he didn't even want the candy back, he just told me that this was the path to prison and that one day someone who isn't as tolerating as he is _would_ catch me red handed and end me in some real actual trouble... after telling me this, he simply turned around and went back inside and after about 5 minutes of considering his words, i actually went back into the store, gave him back the candy bags and apologized for stealing and it was like seeing christmas lights spark up in his eyes... i don't think he expected me to actually make amends for my action, and i don't think he had that happen very often, if ever, either.. like he obviously couldn't care less about the candybags, he was just happy that someone actually listened to him and learned their lesson.
haven't ever stolen anything since that day, and i'm 30 years old now.
That’s common practice by the scum! They will even try to make fake receipts!
I worked at Game 2000-2003.... no full games were on the shelf let alone consoles, so you sure about this?
There is a reason these consoles have serial numbers….if they are not on the receipt, the store basically begs for being fckd with….
Really like the frequent uploads about GW mate, great channel.
I spent the entire pandemic being a retail manager and it nearly cost me my sanity and self-esteem, your videos are very therapeutic.
Man, I love when I get an alert of a new vid while I'm at work. Helps me get through the mundane day, thank you!!!!!
There's something so right about writing "Games Workshop" and "thieves", in the same sentence.
Just like taxation and theft
That second story hit me right in the feels. More of us than you think have been in that exact position xD
@@northernexile - Total F*&ktards!!!!
Just listened to all your GW stories. Please continue. It is important to know what kind of company we are supporting with our money and which values are importan to them. Your contribution helps a lot to get the entire picture, which we wouldn't get just by reading the White Dwarf.
I'm painting my first warhammer army and binge listening and I absolutely love this channel.
Trust me.
Can confirm.
If you watch other videos I go into exactly how little the miniatures are actually worth xD
@@northernexile I know, I reference that info what you told us ALL THE TIME in my videos and nobody wants to believe it!
This is why I now own a 3D printer
I went through a phase of being massively into shoplifting back in my teenage years. When GW in Manchester was a little store on Brown Street, I absolutely pillaged that place!
Did you shout WAAAAGHHH! When you did?
It isn't Pillaging unless you shout WAAAGHHH!
Oof. What happened to the kid?
I haven’t been into a GW store for years, only came back to the hobby last year after 25 years away. Genuinely love this channel, please keep these stories going
A good friend of mine use to work for GW, he often tells me stories of how when new stuff was released he would have to build and paint it in his own time and unfortunately has put him off of painting. Luckily he and I still play blood bowl on a regular basis
Last time I went was around a year ago when they started their free mini at the start of the month if you go to one and I happened to be by one with some time to spare.
it's still the same. they ask you to "go above and beyond" - aka - give us free labour so our stores look good.
I've been asking that question about the ads for ages. I worked on the assumption they worked the way you just described, so let them play on creators I like, skip them on creators I don't really care about. Glad to know I haven't been wasting my time!
I'd love to hear some more funny stories about working in a games workshop. I bet you get some right characters coming into the stores.
Inside Job
They shopped around a bit more and when he came up to the till to pay there was a bunch of Space Marine box sets on the counter that he wanted to buy except the blister of scouts he talked about earlier (at that time the plastic scouts hadn't been released yet)
I looked at the wall of blisters that I had freshly restocked and noticed a divot on the peg where the scouts would be disrupting the completely flush pattern of other blister packs on the wall.
After I rang everything through the till and told him the total, I asked "Was there anything else you wanted to buy today?"
He said, "No, this is all I'm getting today."
Then I looked directly at his pocket and in the happiest and cheeriest voice I could, I asked, "Did you want to buy those scouts today as well?"
Embarrassed, he pulled out the blister of scouts from his pocket and said, "Oh, yeah! I wanted to buy these too."
His mom's eyes went wide and she gave him the "Death Stare." She, also being incredibly embarrassed that her son was trying to shoplift from the store, paid for everything including the scouts and when they left I smiled as I her her chewing out her son for trying to shoplift.
That may be true
But you are ultimately just hurting the managers more then the company.
He would not let up 'sorry you have no receipt' was the reply to all his moaning, this went on for about 15mins 'i want my money back, you are selling crap products etc' eventually he stormed off and the staffer went out back and at the top of his voice shouted 'F*****ING W****NKER' then came back into the shop floor said 'sorry about that in a very calm voice and carried on working as if nothing had happened XD'
Truth is this bloke had stolen the Balrog, broken its wing off the sprue and was trying to pull a fast one. Its one of my best memories working for GW. Feel free to share this story.
Love these stories, i've binged em all. Good for listening whilst painting
I read a story from a gw employee once that said his missile launcher marine would always disappear from the demo table. Always just the launcher marine
I have no interest in warhammer etc. I don't even know how I came across this channel. Somehow I can't stop listening to these games workshop story's
I love you lol. This is how crack starts.
Very good point but I would never condone stealing, 3D print and vote with your wallet by trying other games :)
Dog, remember the legend of CSRs buying used games on the cheap, giving them to friends, and reselling them for store credit at the other stores to then buy new items and return for cash?
I was managing a store when that legend went around as explanation for when BB revamped the whole used game system.
@@FercPolo Haha that's hilarious, you learn something new every day xD
A GW employer dropped his super glue pot on the floor...learnt down with one hand....put his head on the table and super glued his face to the table, someone in the store walked out with an army box under his arm !
Thanks for the Vid, it's good to hear genuine life stories. As a poor kid I was shit & as a moderately successful adult I seek out the one's that reminds me of myself & attempt to make the world a better place...from the states & been holding down since 2nd ED...
I remember my time in Loss Prevention, we had a saying when dealing with shrinkage; Shoplifters are Customers too, just not valued Customers.
Crazy.
2 years old!? My Northern binge has gone deep... For the Algorithm!
Who steals drybrushes?
I've never bought one, i use old standard brushes with the end snipped off with a pair of scissors
I think they stole them because they are nice to use (I admit I love the citadel dry brush) And they are just THERE, easy to miss.
There were a lot of awkward customers that we were almost social workers for and these guys stealing something killed my day.
really enjoying these videos regularly mate, keep it up!
Sorry adding again I was 17-18 at that hippy store. I got fucked aha.
Love the videos Sir, keep up the good work. Definitely interesting to hear your stories about GW. Happy holiday and I joined the discord so perhaps I’ll run into you there. Cheers
When I worked at GW 2001-2006 our training was to hand over the contents of the till if threatened, and ask if they wanted a bag for it.
That's pretty smart. Very distinctive bags.
When I was small I once got accused of being a thief in a GW shop and was searched
When your a naive 10 year old ,a person who works in a store feels like the police so when they want to search you think you have no choice about it
and they proceeded to search me in the middle of the store in front of everyone
when they discovered I had nothing on me from that day onwards, it felt like I was the one they thought had stolen goods
I would be watched all the time from the moment I walked into the store, I still get anxious about it even today walking into a GW store (which isn't helped by staff members coming up and asking the moment I walk through the door if I need help)
dude the fact that you can't walk into a GW store without immediately being antagonized by a staff member there always bothered the shit out of me, like dude just give me like 5 minutes to look around, i might not know specifically what i am looking for before getting into the store. maybe im just browsing things with the intention of getting what speaks most to me at that given point in time, but these fucking sponges literally jump at you the second the front door opens and act as if you had pre-planned your purchase from home down to the last detail.
the worst part, that even when you tell them that you are just gonna browse for a few minutes before making a purchase, they just won't leave you alone.
in one instance i told the staff member i was gonna have a looksie and i kid you not; less than a minute passed by before he came back asking if i had made up my mind.
Loved that jingle at the end

Used to get the odd person who would want to try on the whole shop…. now these people are pretty hard to keep an eye on because they’d want to hand you items they don’t want and you’d need to put it back on the shelves or racks etc and stock would tend to go missing more often with these people …
The amount of times after the customer had left and you’d check the fitting room they’d been in and seen the “remains” of what the customer didn’t want is actually horrific!
PS, I don’t recommend or condone going into clothing shops and “trading” your old clothes for the shops new clothes 🌚
"Found old underwear that customers would “trade in” for new..." - That's nightmare fuel right there!

sorry, i had to based on your picture.
Wouldn't be so bad if some of the ads on youtube weren't longer than the videos.

I skipped straight to the part where he said feel free to skip, then immediately felt bad... then I remembered it's the internet.
I knew a guy who had a smack head friend that would go into GW take painted models from the intro table and run out of the store, that guy would then buy those models to nothing
I’m not even into GW stuff anymore. These videos/stories are very entertaining though. :)

Also “if you skip ad’s” so would I. Frigging great answer.

Exactly. I felt even worse because I felt that way, if that makes sense?
I let the ads play, but i skip if it's something too obnoxious or long.
My first purchase was the Know no Fear set and for my surprise it didn't come sealed. When i noticed that it also didn't come with Noxious Blightbringer, i wanted to return it and get Dark Imperium instead, but would they accept it? It turns out they did and didn't even bother to check if everything was alright with it.
Later i've learned this 7:20 and understood why they didn't bother...
You know, it would be cool to hear about funny moments or the coolest armies that people painted, with the sets that you sold.
Well, paint pots are really easy to pocket and too small to put anti-theft tags on...

Your old GW manager sounds like an absolutely atrocious boss.
New model smell like new codex smell awesome

I have advertisement for 3d printing for this video. Is this a sign?🤣
