  • Apr 2023... AND I ALMOST STEPPED ON TWO RATTLESNAKES
    This is a one night backpacking trip to spectacular 48 ft. Silver Creek Falls in Eldorado National Forest.
    I tried this hike last year but got cliffed out. I thought I was fully prepared to tackle it again this year. I had a better route. I had all the gear I needed. So I thought. But I was not prepared enough.
    I did not anticipate all the brush. It was horrendous. Since the King Fire it has grown up tremendously. My planned route was impossible. My backup plan would take me to a high vantage point overlooking the waterfall. This was very brushy as well and it was a difficult battle to get through it. I almost stepped on a rattlesnake. I was within two steps of it and did not see it. Thankfully, it saw me first and started rattling up a storm and moved away from me. Whew. As I continued down the ridge and into a rocky area I came across another rattlesnake, which again, I did not see. And again, the snake saw me first and started rattling. DANG.
    I was out of water.
    But I found my viewpoint.
    Then I saw my first bear of the year. It was a problem bear. It did not run away from me. (I got video).

    I wouldn't want a bear encounter of any kind but have to say, that bridge dancing gets better and better - 10 out of 10 for sure! Those falls were amazing mind and what a drop too but rookie mistake running out of fluid! I always enjoy a refreshing morning shower, even that one looked like it hit the spot, cheers Alan

    Awesome bear tracks and bear! O, and Amazing waterfall too! I'm really impressed with the view- nice and tall. Quite a bit of burn area and maybe some dirt slide areas too. You hike some nice logging / dirt roads and do some crazy bushwhacking- totally fun! Yikes for the 2 Rattlesnakes!! I'm glad they rattled at you- that happened to me once a couple years ago- it spooked me at first, but then I saw it as a positive encounter, they were doing what they're supposed to do- make noise!! And it made me be much more alert! I'm happy to worked out for you!! Great video!! :) 👍👍🐍🐍

      Thanks Bryan. Yes there was a really bad fire there some years ago. And now the brush is gone up horribly. But still it was a good hike.

    A really difficult hike through some really awkward fallen trees and wild undergrowth. Not sure if I would have enjoyed the hike myself, especially with the possibility of rattlesnake encounters. The waterfall though was so spectacular.

    Loving the new boots Leon, my birthday next week and a new pair is on my wish list! Yikes 80F is hot, love the twirls and precarious log and pole crossings. Those boots? Did they have a body that the snakes and bears ate? Incredible bear prints. Silver and Davis Creek are real beauties, even beats our man made Peasholm! Ah the bear is a real beauty, he did give you a second glance too. Great vid as always. Would you recommend the boots that you bought? 👍

    • @waterfallmadman
      @waterfallmadman  Год назад

      The boots are Merrell which I think you can only get at REI. Not sure if you have that over there, but they are very comfortable. The bear was a beauty but he was not afraid of me at all. They usually run away when they see you. This one was used to people which is not a good thing. Thanks very much!

    Man yeah that was a nice size bear. DING! DONG! We're you in trouble a lot as a kid for jumping all over the furniture? You jump on and off everthing....pretty sure my lower back would explode if I tried your Jacky Chan stunts. However, I could do a bridge dance.

    Wow that bear was huge. What kind was it? We have black bears here all over in PA but they want nothing to do with people. Also, what happened to make all the trees dead? 👍

    • @waterfallmadman
      @waterfallmadman  Год назад +1

      There was a huge fire There some years ago. We only have black bears in California. Usually they will run away when they see me. But this one was not afraid of me at all. Which is not good. Thanks very kindly.

  • @PacificNWHiker

    • @waterfallmadman

      A bad fire many years ago. And yes I’m glad he didn’t come after me. A friend went there after me and saw the same bear and it was stalking him. I have the Salomons still. This hike needed a more rugged boot. Thanks much!
