  • Summary:
“Paro gang" ("Worrying about home"): We are very concerned about our
home and our people. The war which has lasted twenty years has killed so
many people and people in the camps are dying of HIV. The Acholi were a
hard-working people. But now we are condemned to inactivity in the
camps, drink alcohol and have to be fed by the World Food Programme. The
war has made us poor. Tribes hostile to us laugh at us because we fight
each other. May the peace talks be successful. We ask the President of
Uganda to make concessions so that the children kidnapped by the rebels
can return home. We pray to God and ask God's Son and all Saints to help
us. (Summary translation by Anthony Opiyo)
The song was recorded in 2012.

Despite the melanchonic tone and hopelessness expressed in this song, the community still has hope in God's intervention in ending the suffering they endured in the squalid conditions of the IDP Camps. The portrayal of school children in the video is a sign of hope for the future generation. Nostalgia for the good old days also mean the community still hopes for a better futer.
Oh God, I love this song! I love Acholi!

The pain and suffering my people have had to go through for close to three decades is some how relieved with such beautiful, albeit sad beats. Talk about resilience.Love my people without shame.

The concept of rhythm and dance is not easy to bring out but Acholi's for million of years have it in blood and have effectively used all instruments effectively to compose musics and dances and this has been very vivid in her people's courage, talent and economy. To be in the middle of a war is not weakness but evidence of superiority, strength and civilization.

I love the cultural and historical music, its is the unity of our African people and that is why we love our motherland. An outsider cann't understand why African always talk about their villages but Globalization is a big threat this powerful culture.

Exactly. Where the musicians play is right behind the old church that is there. When we explained that we are interessted in Acholi music and that we wanted to record some lukeme orchestras, we were given permission to spend the night there. The news that two white men wantet to record Acholi music spreaded rapidly and early on the next morning many groups from all around the area came to perform their songs. I think that using the lukeme music to express problemes, social issues but also love and everything that matters is a great and very artistic way of participation in society and dealing with history. Besids I will never forget the great hospitality we experienced there. People from this part of Uganda are so sincere and authentic.
