Alternators have rectifiers, generators regulators. An alternator produces AC current the rectifier converts it to DC. A generator produces DC. If you have a solid state (electronic) regulator disconnect the armature (A) lead before striking the generator post with the hot wire from the battery. You don't wanna fry the box. I don't know that it would, but better safe than sorry, eh? If you strike the field post (F) with the hot battery wire you just turned your generator into an electric motor. BTDT. It will try to turn the engine over when you reconnect the wire. A hot lead should always feed the regulator, even with the key off. This is how polarity is maintained. There are two easy ways to tell if the bike's charging. On older mechanically regulated systems the headlight will usually dim just a tad at idle. Rev the bike up, headlight gets brighter, its charging. With a solid state regulator and a HID or LED headlamp it probably won't. With the bike off put test leads on the battery posts (DC setting). With a good, charged battery it should read 12 volts. Start the bike, rev the engine and the voltage should come up to at least 14V DC. Your welcome.
This should be called how long and redundant can I make a video on polarizing one generator. Could have done a fleet of them in the time this guy does his.
I use to have to do this on the old US Army tanks when replacing the main generator. Polarize the system...same as you just did. Most of the time had to be done....
okay I can see how to polarize a generator in this video but why is it necessary and what does it actually do for the generator ? please explain. Thanks
Thanks guy now I.got the picture and even.more knowledgeable on.harleys as time goes on.its a process when your used to.japanese you have re tool your brain
Regulator and rectifier are not the same thing. The rectifier is in the generator and is called a commutator. The box bolted to the frame is the regulator and more (a voltage cut-out circuit and over-current protection).
Any of you have expirience with a solid state regulator with a lithium battery ? I have a new generator , new regulator ,new lithium battery. Butthe led lights inside the regulator wont light up as working or defective. I did not try a lead battery because....i dont have one. Any ideas ? www.custom-chrome-europe.com/en/28092.html?listtype=search&searchparam=28-092
What the hell 2 000 awnsers I 2 minutes iwasnt confused but know a axillary bring my bike to a expert I don't want to damage of fry any wiring.. not worth the risk to me fir a little money my ride won't get fried

he hit the wrong one. he didn't hit the A side
Thank you for the lesson, much appreciation
4:13- jump positive on battery to armature terminal

That my brotha, is one of the nicest ,f,,,,, king sports I've ever seen.. beautiful profile, clean rake...... nicely done bro..
This is how you make a 30 sec video into 8 mins hehe

Thanks for the help I'm going to go try this before I go buy a new generator
Jesus, a 2 second process STRETCHED out to 8 freggin mins.
Thanks for this video. You just saved me a lot of troubles.

Thats funny right there... "You know the battery is fully charged if the bike starts!"
If the battery is dead, will the bike still start using the kickstart?
you , we will be here all night
Thank you for helping!
Why with 78 Harleys 883 foes yhe generator have to be polarized before it will work again
I have -always- disconnected the armature wire from the regulator before flashing it the generator.
Where do the wires of the generator hook up to I got a mechanic voltage regulator
Buy a "Cycle Electric" Genny and you don't have to polarize it!! $400 bucks @ LowBrow Customs
just bought one... 1st line instructions polarizing....
I have been studying how to polorize my generator on my farmall h nobody has been as clear as you have I haven't done it yet but you seem right
If you would write and tell me if this is the right way to do a 6 volt negative ground on a farmall h
Can you post a video on how to wire the generator to the regulator to the battery.

face palm
Here we go again now he's saying how to pronounce the words properly..is this a motercycly fix ..or a cermon
The same with older Harleys......
In yhe video when explaneing the procedure boom.boom.bla bla dosent help bla.
I would chang your handle to captain word salad
Thanks.

And do it your self .the right letters for this are d.i.y.s ....not ...d.y.s

This guy talks too much. Poor video.
