one of the saddest string quartets i've ever heard, very beautiful too.

I have always neglected Milhaud's music a bit and did not known his string quartets. Searching for string quartets I found this, a really poignant , surprising and very beautiful quartet.

Fascinating! An uncharacteristically tenebrous work ... (And by the way, I love the painting, too! And it pairs well with the quartet.)

Amazing, deeply felt score. Milhaud’s quartets display fascinating structural variety and a real mastery of the idiom. They are also extremely concise. I get the unfortunate impression that many of the criticisms of these works are by individuals who have not made the time to carefully listen to them.

I wish Milhaud did more of this kind of thing. I keep trying to get into his immense body of work, but my tastes tend more towards slow and dark music, and it seems he did relatively little of that (Cortege Funebre is another good example), definitely favoring more active lively music.

I turn to milhaud to cleanse my palette. I don't mean that perjoratively. It's modern in essence. Rather traditional in form. When the ultra modern music, and im not using the term ultra in a technical way, his music works to sort of allow me to reset.
