That is the most valid criticism (if you wanna call it that) of Taeyeon. That calm, introverted, humble nature of hers does translate onto the stage and if you know her you notice but you expect it, accept it, and love it on her and it makes it that more exciting when you see her kinda pop off and feel herself prime example the RDR performance at 2011 concert but first impressions can be hit or miss because of it. That’s my girl forever though she just does it for me ❤
His point about the feeling of lack of urgency is so funny when you know that Taeyeon literally means "calm" XD I can see where he's coming from though. There are performers that click for some and don't for others. This is so true. I love her Gravity performance especially since she seems so relaxed. I always feel like Taeyeon is living in the story of the song she's singing which always draws me in. Funnily enough I don't get that from Ariana majority of the time, for instance. She always seems disconnected to me but that's not the case for others. I can appreciate her vocals though. Now Taeyeon does have her moments of disconnection where I can tell she's not fully comfortable like during some SM stages but during her solo concerts it's so different. Different strokes for different folks.
I agree with Jake's opinion during the Gravity performance . You can definitely tell and feel it when Taeyeon is truly experiencing and feeling the song/performance, but there are stages where she isn't and the performances video here are one of them I have cried though multiple times from her other emotional performances, so when i watch the other stages where it felt like she wasn't fully feeling it, thus affecting her stage presence, i still like it because of her voice and she is my ult 😆
„Lack of urgency“ 😂 Well, that is actually put in a kind but somehow accurate way. If you watch e.g. the Step Back video version with the constant camera focus on Taeyeon you notice how she dials up and down the energy depending on if she is the focus or not (which is valid, orchestra musicians also relax a bit when they accompany or have a break). But still there is some kind of Teayeon‘s movements in general maybe being not as punchy as other artists. But in my opinion it’s one of her endearing traits that she pulls you in slowly with her quiet confidence & elegance. If her personality and her music are your cup of tea she can make you a bit crazy over time like a siren luring you in 😊 But tastes vary and Jake said everything so respectful. Nice video.
Yeah, hearing Taeyeon's live then going to hear the record version is like going backwards when it comes to quality. Like live instruments just hit different plus the arrangements mostly were different (and improved) might be because the concert director have a vision different from the album/song producer. Too bad SM just refuse to release a live album version or do a bare minimum job when it comes to Taeyeon.

Whenever Jake is on it feels like an event! He's so right about the Ariana Grande influence in K-pop but it's way more extreme in SM. You can even pinpoint the change in say Girls Generation's music after she got big. SM heard Ariana's The Way and bought a dozen songs that sound like that. Red Velvet debuted after her so they started with that sound already. I'd love to see Jake react to more girl groups! 2NE1 would be really interesting for him to kind of see more 2nd gen and maybe some BoA solo. But I'm curious what he thinks about NewJeans too based on what he said about Taeyeon's laid back performance style.
