I haven't fished up that way much honestly and when I have fished up there I have not done well. I have tried that area a couple of times for steelhead but never for salmon. I usually fish the DSR for salmon or the Upper Fly Zone for Steelies. I had spent some time looking at maps and looking for spots away from the main access areas around the mid-river area but then you have the drift boats that can go anywhere and after you put in all of that effort to get there you have drift boats basically anchored in the good locations. :(
I am gonna need to make the trek up here some time to see what the hype is all about :) AWESOME video my friend. Love the intro/teaster. Glad conditions turned for the better throughout the day. Really excellent job here. Congrats on turning a day trip into multiple episodes. Lucky to have that within 3 hours drive.
Thanks Mike! It is so good I have to do it every year!!! I don't use cleats... although I fall pretty much every year :) There are some sections where there is a lot of slate.. I don't typically fish those sections. I have used corkers that I strap on to my boots in the slate section and it does make a world of difference... especially if you have to chase fish up and down river!
I think ,you did the right thing in going to the DSR…if there will be any willing salmon that will actually "take" a fly ,it would be there…but, like you said, "Flossers, can definitely screw it up for you, as they will have tons of hookups that will spook the other salmon in that run…tough fishing for sure, but ,you came out a winner! Actually, I bet that good soaking rain increased your chances despite the discomfort. W/out it ,there wouldn't be so many freshies running and being so active…just like trout, they have to be sunlight shy.
Yeah... I only fished the DSR for salmon because of their willingness to take a fly and the overall experience. I booked my date several weeks in advance but got lucky that the rain hit just before I got there. Definitely had a good push of fish... although that appears to have continued as they've been having great fishing for weeks!
It looks like you are using regular streamer hooks, which sometimes get straightened out by the salmon. Have you ever tried tying your flies on regular salmon fly hooks? I enjoy watching you get takes from salmon by "Euronymphing" in shallow water. Do you think you could get those fish to take by swinging a lightly weighted or unweighted wooly bugger on a floating line? The idea would be to keep the fly near the surface to avoid foul hooking. Finally, I like your Highlander; it looks just like mine!
I have experimented with hooks the last few years. I used to use bigger hooks and bigger flies but moved to smaller hooks and smaller flies to combat the straightening of hooks. This year I found a heavier streamer hook to use and none of those straightened out. In face I only had 1 hook bend out the whole trip and that was on of the older style hooks. I had some salmon style hooks but the ones I had were even more flexible... The search goes on for the perfect hook. I think I was closer this year but could still do better. Yes... I have tried swinging before and have watched salmon follow my fly and take it while doing that. I've been thinking more and more about doing this lately and may experiment with it more. I like nymphing but there is no mistaking a take on the swing :) As for the highlander... it is the best vehicle I've ever owned. It is almost 10 years old and 190K miles and going strong. My daughter turns 16 next year and it will be 10 years old so I'm planning on a new vehicle next year but keeping the Highlander too.
Hi Joe. I have videos on both of these things if you're interested in more detail. I'll link them below. Basically I use a 8wt switch rod that is a little over 11' long (Can't remember exactly but 11'3" or 11'4"). My tippet size was between 15# and 20# on this trip. I was breaking some fish off on the lighter line and went heavier in the end if I recall. The fly I use is a black wooly bugger that I tie and have a video for. IF King Kuomo is allowing us expatriated New Yorkastanis from the South back in next year.... LOL I am DEF hitting the DSR.. Especially after what I heard about the Ballpark this weekend.. How light did you drop down to?
Yeah... hopefully next year we're back to normal and I can spend more than a day. What happened at the Ballpark this weekend? The first time I ever fished the river it was low water conditions like this and we fished the ballpark. It was shoulder to shoulder and my first taste of salmon fishing...
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Snagging, snagging and more snagging.. Like not even trying to hide it snagging.. People cutting other people's lines when the fish was running.. Even saw a video of a guy with the spinning reel up, trying to look like he wasn't snagging. I guess it was flat out war.
Even though the water is low there are a lot of fish! When nature calls the fish answer. Going up Friday. Probably hit the sportsman’s. I heard some steelies are coming in, so hoping to get one!
Yeah man I was there for two whole days but I fished public waters and wow these fish were spooked off my 8lb line and it wasn’t my split shot either and it was hard to find fish that weren’t getting thrown at by twenty people and getting snagged
Yeah... that's why the main river is so hard... Almost impossible sometimes. Low water and lots of people and those fish get hammered... really hard to get a bite in those circumstances.
I used to always bring a net... but when you're fishing by yourself it gets way too hard to use a net. I found after several years of carrying a net that you are better of tailing them... at least in shallow water. Their tails are so wide that you get a really good hold of the fish that way!
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany yeah its either or for me... sometimes you can get em with a net yourself, but hey if theyre whooped and at youre feet why the hell not right, hopefully ya dont get a stray hook. Tight lines out there brotha!
Nice video truly enjoyed it! I would like to to point out that I saw you were putting a lot of upward pressure and sometimes in the opposite direction of the fish's run , this will cause the line to break on a fish. You must always (or try to as close) apply pressure in a perpendicular direction to the fish's head, A fish can exert a lot of force in the forward direction by propulsion from the tail but not much in other directions . Think of it like driving a car and steering it vs breaking, if you try to put the breaker your line will snap , but if you try to steer it wont. Like laws of motion in physics , when perpendicular force is applied to an object in motion the speed of the body will not change. The direction WILL change. If the force remains perpendicular to the new direction. Here the "Speed " is the propulsion force of the fish. When you are applying force closer to the path of the fish the pressure should be minimal only to keep the hook pinned. You would have to constantly twist , rotate and move to maintain perpendicular or close to of an angle . Keep a very light drag only enough to keep the hooks pinned keep light contact with the spool and use your thumb/palm as drag when you hav better angles and turn the fish. Its easier said than done but if you have this in your mind and are aware of it you ill land more.
That's a good explanation. I always try to keep side pressure on the fish. I talk about this a lot in my videos but when the fish runs I'll often keep the rod high to keep them from tangling me on rocks. The salmon that typically will bite are the fresh fish and I'm probably less than a mile from the lake where I fish so these fish are fresh and can kick your butt. Most of the time there is not much you can do except hold on and hope you can turn them... especially if they are running up or down stream. I try to turn them when I can exactly like you said but it is not always successful or possible with fresh fish. The second video from that year I have a much better landing ratio and I honestly think I fought them better than in this video.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Yep I can understand, Light tackle and fast /powerful fish is always a challenge. I guess the freespool style fighting might be easier for me as I am targeting them on a centrepin or a bait-caster. I picked up this style of fighting fish while fishing for powerful groupers and GT in the rocks on relatively lighter tackle, The fish can't rub off/cause abrasion without any tension on the line. The Sensitivity of the fingers on the spool and the feedback it gives is hard to match .My landing ratio went up when I moved away from spinning gear , fighting with drag to a freespool fight. Regarding side pressure I observed that sometimes it was sideways with respect to the direction you were facing but not sideways as compared to the direction of the fish's run. I hope you land bigger/chromer fish this season. Regarding tippets and teeth, I have been thinking about using twisted leader setup(which we use while fishing snakeheads, barracudas and other fish that have dog tooth) but on ultralight tippets for example instead of a 0.07inch tippet you use two 0.04inch tippets in a twisted/braided setup, this causes the teeth to slide into the twists instead of cutting the leader. Worth seeing how supple/ rigid this ends up worth a try I would say! Just trying to put as many odds in our favour as possible we really need them!
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I used to live in India and fish for tropical saltwarer fish from the rocks. Were powerful fish are feeding on smaller bait in the sharp rocks, unlike the smooth rocks in the river these rocks are sharp and chipped from the waves, if you have tension on the line and it touches these sharp edges its game over so the ability to go from fighting drag/pressure to zero was critical for me . I moved to Toronto,Canada 2.5 years ago.
I felt the same that morning. Really frustrating. But the day turned around big time! I landed almost all of my fish in the afternoon (Episode 2.. coming soon)...
I tie them in varying weights and sizes so I can adapt based on the water conditions and the willingness of the fish. I do a fly tying video if you want to see how I tied them and how much weight I tie in. ruclips.net/video/vzQu_z44mIA/видео.html
I go through rods and reels in this video here. ruclips.net/video/UHTWkr0L1Nw/видео.html But basically I like an 11 foot 8wt switch rod. If not that then a 9 foot 9 weight rod.
This was late September last year. I don't usually go til late September because it can be hit or miss. Watch the reports closely to see what activity is happening. Then you just have to take a chance and go and hope there are fresh fish moving in.
@@DavidWhite-rr9em I don't believe there is. There is a bridge in the estuary but I think that's it. There is, however, a pier at the mouth of grindstone creek at a park called Selkirk Shores. People will cast there for browns, steelies and salmon sometimes.
I think it was $75\day. And YES... it is without a doubt the best money I spend every year! I have incredible days with fishing that rivals Alaska for $75. No brainer for me!
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I was hoping to go during the week maybe on wednesday, to try? I believe its 60, next week or so. I am very new to flyfishing, but i wanted to catch a salmon, Ive only caught maybe 12in brown before, just got my 8wt in. Pretty excited
@@moderncombat5andclashofcla246 Sweet! Good luck! I ALWAYS aim for midweek to have as few people as possible. Check to see if the DSR has passes available. If they're booked, you can always do an afternoon pass... I've done that the last few years so I can fish an afternoon and get the lay of the land. I have had very good afternoons! People leave and a lot of times the fishing gets better! On this particular trip I had the river to myself at the end and that's when the most fish were there!
LOL Yeah.. it is big... i haven't explored most of it. I like to go as close to the lake as possible just so I get the fish as they are new to the river. They'll be more aggressive. I actually stay away from the named holes unless they're not crowded. I've hit the Joss late in the afternoon and had good success... but I would honestly rather find holding water that is not a big hole because the fish that hold where people are not fishing will likely be more aggressive. The fish that hold in the holes are fished pretty hard unless the crowds have died down. Find me on Instagram or Facebook and I'll give you a little more detail in private.
Its called fishing, not flossing, or drifting!!! You change your bait when you need to, you change your fly when you need to, fly fishermen use 9ft leaders, do you call them flossers if they catch fish??? You change your technique when your fishing if something doesn't work or you catch nothing and maybe you still catch nothing, FISHING!!! ✌
I specifically target fish that are willing to bite. If they're not willing to bite then I don't catch fish (like most of that morning in the video) I change a lot of things while I fish if I'm not getting actual bites but my setup is optimized to avoid flossing or fouling fish because I'm not interested in hooking up that way... it still happens... but when I actually start hooking up it is usually because the fish are taking the fly. In the case of this video I removed ALL split shot from my line and downsized my line.. my hook placements and activity of the fish indicate that I'm getting bites and not flossing. I have a video on how I set everything up too if you're interested. ruclips.net/video/UHTWkr0L1Nw/видео.html
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I understand what you are saying, and forgive me if I sounded out of place. I was there last week and I felt your frustration!!! They say, "they" that the salmon bite out of frustration or annoyance of the hook or bait being in their way not because they want a quick bite on their way to spawn, almost like deer when on the rutt, thats all they want to do, for the salmon ,just get up river and spawn. You've obviously seen more actual bites than I have, most of my hook sets I did not see. Thanks for your video, I seriously need to go back soon again. And I hear that most of the fish were holding up by the Oswego dam.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Just watched your video on your setup, and if I would've aatch that one first, I would've held back my comments, lol ! Fish on!!! 🎣
@@peterock8217 No worries. Getting salmon to bite is a way harder way to fish and you will get frustrated (like I was in this video). I believe the salmon will bite for a lot of reasons...first of all they are the top predator and have a killer instinct. When you get them fresh from the lake they can be really aggressive! I honestly don't know anything about the Oswego fishery... never fished it. I was fishing the Douglaston Salmon Run on the Salmon River. Some people don't like to pay to fish but I find it to be a drastically different experience from the rest of the river (for the most part). I have literally had 1 bad day in the last 5 years there and that was because I was there way too early (really early Sept) and there were very few fish. I have had so many good days at the DSR including some of my best days of fishing in my life! I would recommend it. I have lost so many salmon this season so many! Everyone around me flosses too very annoying
I will never land one lol
I felt the same that morning. Really frustrating. But the day turned around big time! I landed almost all of my fish in the afternoon (Episode 2.. coming soon)...
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany good for you man!
How much does the wooly bugger weigh
I tie them in varying weights and sizes so I can adapt based on the water conditions and the willingness of the fish. I do a fly tying video if you want to see how I tied them and how much weight I tie in. ruclips.net/video/vzQu_z44mIA/видео.html
I’m stationed here at fort drum do you know any places I can catch those biguns?
I've never fished up that way but the Black River gets a salmon run. I think that is pretty close by for you.
Do you have any suggestion what to use and what setup?
@@carlregis9491 I did a video on my entire setup! This will be good to watch for a lot of good information! ruclips.net/video/UHTWkr0L1Nw/видео.html
What weight rod do you recommend?
I go through rods and reels in this video here. ruclips.net/video/UHTWkr0L1Nw/видео.html But basically I like an 11 foot 8wt switch rod. If not that then a 9 foot 9 weight rod.
Any steelhead
No steelies or browns when I went. Mostly Kings and a few Cohos.
Gods country
That intro is straight 🔥.
Thanks! :)
a buddy with a net
Way easier to land them with help!!!
What part of september is this ?
This was late September last year. I don't usually go til late September because it can be hit or miss. Watch the reports closely to see what activity is happening. Then you just have to take a chance and go and hope there are fresh fish moving in.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I'm scheduled for 3rd week in september. Praying for rain lol
@@DavidWhite-rr9em Nice! Good luck! I'll pray for rain for you! :)
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany one question. Is there a pier at the mouth of salmon river?
@@DavidWhite-rr9em I don't believe there is. There is a bridge in the estuary but I think that's it. There is, however, a pier at the mouth of grindstone creek at a park called Selkirk Shores. People will cast there for browns, steelies and salmon sometimes.
Is it worth it to pay the 60$?
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany what holes do you think are good for the dsr, the land seems so big, Im not sure where I should even start fishing
LOL Yeah.. it is big... i haven't explored most of it.
We are starting to get a little later in the run... not sure how many more fresh fish will be pouring into the river... from what I understand so far it has been a good run. But then come the steelies!!! :)
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Yup, sounds hood. The black hole is just up river from the dsr, I heard and could see all those guys fishing the north end of it!!! Lots of action there, except two Sundays ago, an extremely weird quite day, no one was there! Thanks again man for your videos, and I am going to try some of your techniques for sure, hopefully I'll return soon! Three hour drive form PA for me, we'll see.
Love picking you DSR guys beautiful flies out from the backs and fins. I have a nice collection. I fish for free on public property. You are just feeding the land monger and making it more expensive why do you do this?
LOL... To each their own. :) I fish the DSR because of the overall experience, less people and the willingness of the fish to hit a fly. It is well worth the money for that experience to me.
they dont bite
You were blind flossing vs spot flossing. They aren't biting
