I sold my Dji and am getting the Karma now. Such a great convenience to use all those tools to capture great video - land, air, and water. Thanks for all the hard work in making this video !
Finally someone who gets what the karma drone actually is and does! Handheld 4K video, underwater, action cam, or stabilized handheld unit or mounted unit... OR connect to a drone and go flying.. it can do so much that people miss the point.
As a motovlogger, I really enjoyed the footage on the bike, showing that it wasn't just a drone, but how you would use it on a typical shoot. This is the one area I think that Hero got it right. Most people don't need "just" a drone, they want to be able to do it all with one package. I guess if you already had everything you needed, and you wanted a really great drone, then the Mavic is your baby, but for those of us who want action shots and drone shots, this might be a sweet package. Waiting to see what the full reviews come in like.
There are rarely few seasoned drone reviewers who are able to look beyond the paper specs and ask ourselves the real reasons of getting a drone. Drone racing, commercial crops spraying...you and i most likely are getting one to take aerial perspectives of our life experiences and encounters to share with friends. We all agreed GoPro videos on youtube are sticky and addictive and we all aspire to create such content. If you look closer, such great story-telling videos usually consist of footages taken from different perspectives with a simple storyboard. This is when you could see the light of why GoPro Karma is such a clever design with that intention in mind; a detachment gimbal and camera to capture different perspectives from the sky, on the ground and in the sea. We would then see the real benefits of the four pre-programme flight paths capturing cinematic aerial moments. The last thing we wish to do with the drone is to fly them aimlessly in the sky like a kite. Do we really need a drone to fly 7km away at breakneck speed? On a side note, what about the all important "collision avoidance" and "follow-me" features EVEN THOUGH like all greedy consumers i might not really need them? But i want them! So it great to hear that Karma already have all the hardware necessary for future firmware upgrades to allow "collision avoidance" and "follow-me" features. i read that in the reddit/Engadget interviews with Mr Woodman and Pablo Lema respectively. But GoPro did not end just there because we know all too well what happened to our wonderful footages. They are most likely buried in the SD card or backup hard drive waiting for that glory day to tell our stories if and only if we could finally managed to overcome the steep learning curve of video editing software. This is when GoPro Quik Desktop comes in handy. Now, It is really easy to stitch together those recordings into a wonderful story backed by a massive royalty-free but always-seems-appropriate music library. Have a try. It is really an Apple-like video editing software sans the frustration. Finally, the GoPro plus provide a nice finish with a convenient cloud-based repository of our ever-increasing collections of videos within Internet-reach. So in my opinion, GoPro is no longer an action camera or drone company we are familiar in the past. It has finally evolved into one that has delivered the promise for an end-to-end, Apple-like ecosystem consisting of Hero 5/Karma/Gimbal Grip/Quik desktop/GoPro Plus allowing us to tell and share our stories effortlessly to everyone! DJI is merely another drone company.
Great video man! Really like the hole "storytelling" thing. Pack your stuff, ride your bike, make a little drone video, pack it up and go home. Easy! I dont have any previous experience with drones. With that said this christmas I am gonna buy myself one. Its between Karma and the Mavic Pro...and I am really undecisive. I am a kayaker and really picky about photo quality, and portability is key. Help me please!? :-)
Thanks! Karma is designed to make the flight experience safe enjoyable and easy especially for first time pilots. The drone was built around the GoPro camera and has image quality top of mind. Im sure other drones will work great, but remember, this is more than just a drone. I can't wait to take my Karma Grip to the ski slopes! - Let me know if you have any questions
Since the weather is terrible im watching karma videos and just wanted to say thank you for putting your video specs and what you shot at. Great video.
Gopro is awesome and the stability incorporated, though fisheye distortion as your driving past the car park shows why its not the best for an aerial camera. Nice video..
It's post distortion correction mate. the physical lens is a fisheye lens. The Linear mode is simply post processing. (similar to the fix fisheye option within the gopro studio, except it does it on camera) Reason it only does it up to 2k as it's chopping up the video surrounding that image. It is a good idea, and great they incorporated it on camera, but it certainly results in image degradation. I think a better idea and hopefully something they will do is being able to quickly swap the lens. Though that may be difficult keeping it waterproof.
I agree. Its not the best camera for ariel, but not everyone can put a Red under an octocopter. The fisheye lens has, and will probably always be a staple feature of the GoPro. I can't take my Red and mont it on my helmet as easily as my GoPro. My argument is versatility + price vs. quality + convenience.
Thanks for sharing. I had just recently posted a question asking if the whole karma kit would work with the seeker backpack which I think looks slicker than the case the karma comes with, and here you go demonstrating it!
"curious bystander" I think the dude wanted to steal your shit 😂😂 I really enjoyed this video btw, you just sold me on buying the seeker so I can fit my karma and all other gopro accessories (the Karma backpack/case is kinda cumbersome) 👍😎
thanks great video - I'm going to buy my first drone soon but I don't like the fisheye on the gopro and because I'm new to drones like the anti crash sensors in the new DJI Mavic.
There is "linear FOV" on the Hero5 Black and Hero5 Session that allows you to remove the fisheye. I honestly would practice on a micro drone first. A lot of interested drone consumers are quick to spend the big bucks on a filming drone without getting the idea of piloting under their belt first. I have found multiple new drone pilots greatly benefiting (ski-sets and total cost spent on piloting) from a micro drone first. This is what I would recommend to start: www.amazon.com/Blade-Inductrix-Ultra-Micro-Technology/dp/B01342CJS6/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476211686&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=blade+microdrone - These little guys are meant to crash and does not cost you $800 when something goes wrong.
The only thing I'm worried about is that it is so big, I travel to Canada and back to NJ a lot cause of family in Canada, and I'm 13, but I'm saving up for the karma cause I have a hero 4 silver that I haven't used for a while so I will but the special case for the 4 silver. Great vid
hi Thomasone of the first videos that demonstrate the amazing stories capacity this all around system provides. It proves that the karma is more than a drone alone!!!!!!!!!!!!People will soon start realizing where gopro separate itself from example dji drones.Which are really just simply drones(great ones!).ps I found your video by accident.perhaps you have to reload it under gopro karma-the magic backpack.most people will surge under gopro karma
I do not plan to test range. I have friends who have tested Karma range and they say its plenty. I would rather follow the rules and fly 'line of sight' able to see it at all times.
nice video, but will the gimbal be able to use with the small big in the future without the long pole, so i can have it in the centre of my chest without the big stick which is annoying
For the time being the Karma mounting Ring will allow you to attach the Gimbal to the GoPro ecosystem of mounts. There is an awesome product coming out in spring 2017 that you will be interested in called Karma Grip Extension Cable : shop.gopro.com/karmaaccessories
bro loved the video . you did a awesome editing job as well. I like what you did with your channel. you have my subscription and I would like to have your support as well. looking forward to catching up on your channel. thanks again for sharing,
Thanks for the video. I was hoping that the Karma would fit with the props attached. Will it not fit at all with them attached, or where they off for another reason? Thanks
The backpack that Karma comes with allows you to keep the propellers on the bird while transporting. I am using the smaller GoPro Seeker backpack which fits all the same contents, but is more compact in size making you remove the propellers to fit. I have both backpacks and often times switch between the two depending on if I want to be fast and not have to remove propellers, or if I want to have a smaller lower profile backpack.
This was really nice :D you earned a sub! I know that the Karma can fly up to 1km away from the controller, but i just dont think it is that much? In the video it looks like you get the Karma very far away
It can go 1km confidently... Although GoPro does not recommend it AT ALL, it is not responsible drone piloting, nor should you go further than whats recommended or beyond line of sight, I have seen this bird go much further with complete confidence and control.
Thomas Grana Okay, thanks :D I'm definitely buying the GoPro Hero 5 Black Edition and Karma together as a bundle the 23rd. It's gonna be so fun when skiing and mountainbiking!
im not sure I fully understand the question, but Karma is updatable and it comes pre-loaded with auto shot paths to make filming dynamic and cool shots easy without having to be an advanced drone pilot.
I wonder if they are going to sell this backpack with the karma or is it just going to be the other one? I like this backpack a lot more. Were you shooting the video in 4k with the drone?
The seeker backpack that I used in the video is sold separately and I use it for WAY more than simply drone flying. The drone footage is shot in 2.7K Medium on the GoPro Hero5 Black, but remember that you need to adjust your youtube quality to see this quality. shop.gopro.com/karmaaccessories
hey bro, i wanna know if dslr and lenses fits on top pocket of the bag, and more clothes on the main compartment even with Karma is in place. can you make a video on that one too please?
The top pouch of the GoPro Seeker backpack can potentially hold a mid range DSLR lens... It perfectly fits my Oakley sun glasses case with very little wiggle room.
Can you make a video on how you maximize the bag? if its possible :) with a drone, dslr's and clothes maybe. Im planning to get one but in our country it's by order only.
Great video. Best hands on video on the karma now! Would you know if the gimbal/grip is waterproof? lets say I would want to strap it on my chest while wakeboarding, will it survive a crash? or even the occasional splash of water?
The Karma Grip has a rubberized finish, but I don't think its waterproof. It feels a lot more solid than any other gimbal I have used.Im waaaaay more interested in taking this gimbal into the snow compared to others... ruclips.net/video/2UzHkVb5H_A/видео.html
Anyone know how the Seeker bag compares to the Karma bag that comes with the Karma kit? Was thinking about getting the hero 5 + Karma grip + Seeker bag. But for $230 more may as well get the whole karma kit with drone? Will be using while mt. biking. Seeker obviously is sleeker and had better storage, but will karma bag be comfortable and stable on a MTB?
Giomar Jaramillo I use the GoPro Hero5 Black shooting 2.7k resolution. When I am video editing I do not transcode or downrez so that when I export from Adobe Premier, the footage is high quality.
I am not exactly an expert at these things but what Im understanding is that when I record in 2.7k then i should always just keep it at "source" and to put it on youtube it automatically uploads in the higher quality than 1080p?
Giomar Jaramillo yes! When I upload higher than 1080 footage to RUclips, RUclips automatically recognizes the higher resolution and uploads higher quality
great question... the Hero4 Black does not have that feature on the camera like the Hero5 Black, but using the GoPro Software (free) you can remove the fisheye of your Hero4 Black in Post.
Is it true that Karma already have all the hardware necessary for future firmware upgrades to allow "collision avoidance" and "follow-me" features? i read that in the reddit/Engadget interview with Nick Woodman and Pablo Lema respectively. Thomas Grana Hey i messed up my reponse and i think I cancelled yoruz, anyway Ignore that. Thanks for your reply, you say it would last all day ? Well I guess we'll have to try it out to see for myself. I go through 4 batteries of go pro and osmo when I shoot. So I need something stronger. Cheers man
TechPro Dad the backpack comes with a plastic clip on its shoulder strap. I mounted the Karma Grip to this using the mounting ring included with the grip. It's super easy
GoPro has really stepped up the game when it comes to responsible drone piloting. The system does not permit you to take off or fly into no fly zones. more info here: shop.gopro.com/karma
not exactly... there is an "Easy Mode" to make it easier for beginners to get comfortable with the feel of piloting a drone, and learning to control Karma, but no stick customization. GoPro is always open to feedback though
ok..thanks! I'm used to way FPS game controls are and that's what i've done to my Phantom 4 controller... left stick forward/back & yaw left/right....right stick up/down & look left/right.
Hehe, this was amazing. Karma have so much more features than Mavic. And for the price... The GoPro Hero 5 is also a better camera. The linear mode is awesome!
I sold my Dji and am getting the Karma now. Such a great convenience to use all those tools to capture great video - land, air, and water. Thanks for all the hard work in making this video !
Nicholas Brouillard you played yourself.

great video i cant wait for 10/23
Short and sweet.. just a great setup and easy! Can't wait to order!!
Great video, awesome system, nice demonstration of the versatility.
Awesome video!
this should be a commercial video, it is way better then the ones made by the big companies!
It makes you want to buy one

Very nice done, man.
Exactly!!! It's a system, not just a drone or camera or grip. It's the whole package!!
Nice video I liked the little descriptions along the way. Looks like you work for GoPro, killer.
Great video! Is it possible to fly the Karma indoors?
Justo Manuel Pavía Benítez Yep
Nice video! I have a bebob 2 (videos on my channel), but now I am getting the Karma!!!
Gopro is awesome and the stability incorporated, though fisheye distortion as your driving past the car park shows why its not the best for an aerial camera. Nice video..

Realy cool video man please do a full review
best video ever
if karma loses signal will it fly home like the drones from dji?
yup!
Awesome edit, Thomas. I liked and subbed. Did you color correct the footage?
Great video!! Really enjoyed this review, just wanting it to be longer. How did you get it so early??
thanks great video - I'm going to buy my first drone soon but I don't like the fisheye on the gopro and because I'm new to drones like the anti crash sensors in the new DJI Mavic.

The jacket is a dainese
Thomas Grana Is it the Dainese Assen jacket?
yup
Cool vid 👍🏻

is this the seeker bag?
nice video. looking forward to the stabilizer. when will the Hero 4 harness be available?
I'm not 100% sure, but soon!
can anyone answer how high this thing goes max.
14,500ft (4,500m) ...Tech Specs available on the GoPro Website : shop.gopro.com/karmatechspecs
pls check regulations, just because it can does not mean you´re allowed to, that is some serious height and potential danger to other aircrafts
Do you plan test real range in next videos? It will be interesting to see.
I do not plan to test range. I have friends who have tested Karma range and they say its plenty. I would rather follow the rules and fly 'line of sight' able to see it at all times.

its worth it in my opinion! its at the seeker is rad backpack that I use for everything now 😎
how did you upload to youtube with the quality being so high and crisp
Giomar Jaramillo I use the GoPro Hero5 Black shooting 2.7k resolution. When I am video editing I do not transcode or downrez so that when I export from Adobe Premier, the footage is high quality.
I am not exactly an expert at these things but what Im understanding is that when I record in 2.7k then i should always just keep it at "source" and to put it on youtube it automatically uploads in the higher quality than 1080p?
Giomar Jaramillo yes! When I upload higher than 1080 footage to RUclips, RUclips automatically recognizes the higher resolution and uploads higher quality
awesome thank you!
Noticed you had no fisheye on drone videos, which looked awesome. Can i get it to look like that with my Hero4 Black?
great question... the Hero4 Black does not have that feature on the camera like the Hero5 Black, but using the GoPro Software (free) you can remove the fisheye of your Hero4 Black in Post.
Cheers man, also found a preset in Premiere that seems to work alright. Wont know for sure till I get my own Karma ;)
Donovan Muller Check out camera update version 5.0 for HERO4 camera that includes Linear FOV. It's all in the camera now. gopro.com/update/hero4
Jason thanks mate, thats awesome!
nice edit =)
That DRZ400SM tho!
Is it true that Karma already have all the hardware necessary for future firmware upgrades to allow "collision avoidance" and "follow-me" features? i read that in the reddit/Engadget interview with Nick Woodman and Pablo Lema respectively. I will be stoked and pick Karma over mavic pro anytime if that's in the pipeline.
When will we be seeing more in-depth press reviews on Karma other than the brief hands-on during the launch event?
The Karma system has the ability to update firmware. I know GoPro is aware of their competition boasting features like "collision avoidance" and "follow-me", but I am not privy to new features. GoPro is always interested in direct feedback: GoPro.com/connect
That's cool! It is a real pity not many can see the benefits of the four pre-programme flight paths as your video has clearly illustrated (as of now, i only see your karma demo on youtube). More cinematic aerial shots with a good storyboard than a novice piloting the mavic drone aimlessly without any objective like an expensive kite. When will GoPro send out review units to the press?
Can I take Karma for a spin?
Only if the dji mavic was set up like this. Only reason I'm getting the Mavic over the karma is the size and battery life. If karma had those things I wouldn't think twice. You do get more bang for your buck with it.
are you tightening the propellers with the tool as well?
nope, the propellers are self tightening. I loosely secure them before flight and they only get tighter as they go.
can you pan the image using the controller or is it always looking at the horizon? can you capture images looking straight down??
Ya definitely... check this out: ruclips.net/video/huAzmDfQPZA/видео.html
My dad got a karma drone for his. Birthday now we know how to fly it thx 😀
Awesome!!! Stoked!!!
Hey man do you know if the karma grip can take extra batteries or are we limited to just one ? the drone has swapable battery, that I know, but no one mentions anything about the karma grip... I'd like to know. Cheers
Cheers man
Thanks.
Lets see the mavic do that!
How did you attach the Karma Grip to the Seeker back pack?
TechPro Dad the backpack comes with a plastic clip on its shoulder strap. I mounted the Karma Grip to this using the mounting ring included with the grip. It's super easy
hi ! i live in France but the drone is not avalaible yet .. Where did you get it ?
in the US
I love gopro product
Are their flight restrictions
GoPro has really stepped up the game when it comes to responsible drone piloting. The system does not permit you to take off or fly into no fly zones. more info here: shop.gopro.com/karma
can you customize the flight sticks like the DJI?
not exactly... there is an "Easy Mode" to make it easier for beginners to get comfortable with the feel of piloting a drone, and learning to control Karma, but no stick customization. GoPro is always open to feedback though
ok..thanks! I'm used to way FPS game controls are and that's what i've done to my Phantom 4 controller... left stick forward/back & yaw left/right....right stick up/down & look left/right.
Newbie here. I'll have more GoPro videos soon.
Hey, how is the Video delay on the display of the contoller? Could you fly only looking at the screen or is the delay to big?
it is instantaneous. virtually zero lag. You are completely able to fly from the Karma Controller.
Ok nice ty ;)
Andhow is the range?
where can i get that bag is that a karma specific backpack or just a regular backpack?
Its the Gopro seeker pack. The drone comes with it's own backpack included but this seeker one you will have to buy separate.
This is a sport style backpack produced by GoPro that was designed to fit Karma.. shop.gopro.com/accessories-2/seeker/AWOPB-001.html
Can you please tell How much it cost???
$799 check out the details: shop.gopro.com/karmawhatsincluded

thx
good!
The time of battery yo used?
15 min is true? or -?
It depends on the variables like amount of wind, how aggressive of piloting maneuvers/acceleration etc.. I am averaging 18-22 mn flights
Thomas Grana ok thx, and abuout of the recall to Back home is really funcionable?
End now try the Mavic .........RIP KARMA
how do I mount Mavic to my motorcycle?
Hehe, this was amazing. Karma have so much more features than Mavic. And for the price... The GoPro Hero 5 is also a better camera. The linear mode is awesome!
