Was late to the party ‘coz only watched Wednesday last week. Jenna’s performance was a killer. But Gwendoline Christie stole the show for me. I went into this, ready for the biting humor and sarcasm. I wasn’t prepared at all for Towering Blond Goddess for a headmistress. They say the character was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s blonds? But I see Vampire Goddess. If Vampires had royalty, Gwendoline Christie’s Larissa Weems is it. She’s such a delicious contrast to the cheerless Wednesday. Tall vs tiny, dark vs light. But they’re more alike than they think. Hope they bring Weems back for season 2 because Gwendoline Christie and Jenna Ortega together are one of the best things in the Nevermore universe. Also, can't help it. Weems is my absolute favorite.
Also, does it make frigging sense that a normie could take her out? She’s like the Dumbledore or Gandalf in this universe. That line of defense shouldn’t be so easily killed.
I was ready to love Morticia. But in every iteration of the Addams family, the Addamses love their kids. I don’t think this Morticia will ever win or push against this Wednesday. But Weems can. They’re equals in some ways. Wednesday has never had a school figure she respected that could handle her. I was ready to go into this thinking Wednesday would win against everyone. But in that desk crawl alone, you can see the surprise and banked terror in Jenna’s eyes when Gwendoline unfolds her full form across the desk. SOOOOO magnificent.
Would love to see these two develop and navigate this tricky relationship. I love their friend-or-foe dynamic. And they are visually each other’s opposites. And, honestly, Gwendolyn Christie is such a pleasure to watch on screen. Those movements!!!
She has this scene that kills me dead (which is why it’s in the vid). She's going down the stairs and, agh, that body can move mountains. What a visually powerful icon. Just love Gwendolyn Christie to bits here bringing all that screen siren/vampire goddess energy to the show.
What an absolutely magical human being. :D
