January this year has been much colder and snowy than usual. Last year I planted several ttrachycarpus fortunei we got on a road trip to Florida in front of the house. They are unprotected and have experience several inches of show this year. I'm a bit nervous that they may not survive. The low this year has been down to 14F and I have been knocking the snow off of it so they should be okay. The winter blooming shrubs - edgeworthia 'nanjing gold', camellia 'Jacks', variegated winter daphne - are full of buds. Come Februrary, I plan on starting a few seeds using the winter sowing method and training my fruit trees.
