Done no death on nightmare before. If you reload the save does that somehow reset the alien ai or something? Because without reloading I can tell you my experience was that he dropped as soon as I enter one of the rooms you climb to (camera in the left room). He also drops the moment I pull the first lever in the locker room. Also, I have to say having done this mission straight through I feel the last encounter is hardest because the alien has excellen sight lines and there's not nearly as much cover
Reloading that save makes the alien less likely to drop in that area. And I got pretty lucky in the 3rd Encounter. I only saw him near the end, but you could see him much more it's pretty odd.
