    I just purchased this and it's pretty big and my tote for 6 chicks is 32 gallon very little walking room and that's with the broader being upright. They seem to be ok they stand up against it. I am looking for a larger bin. Great review, thanks

    We have two. One stopped working. It has a thermal fuse in it that blew. Can't find a new one.
    The legs aren't tall enough. The highest level is ok for a week. After that we prop it up with boards on one side.
    Set cardboard on top because they like to hang out on it and make a mess that needs to be scraped off.
    The burned out one made for expensive chickens as it only lasted a few rounds of chicks.

      Update been using for 6 weeks for quail and is spot on working great. Added a couple of pieces of cardboard to see if they needed to be closer to the heat source and I stair-step them to find out what level would be perfect two pieces of cardboard for the first week then one then none on the next week so 3 weeks out on the 4th week I found them running in and out on the load of on the lowest setting.

    Hoping it's warm enough for day old chicks. So far the thermometer won't go above 78..... That's pretty cool for chicks coming out of the incubator in a cool house. Crossing fingers

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you will want to make sure that you keep them in an area that wind can not be blowing into also!

      @@splitarrowfarm I turned the heat up in the house for the first couple of days. It's ok as long as my heat is up. We're extremely cold right now. I leave my heater low as a rule to prevent high gas bills and dry sinus. It's working well after the chicks are in a a few hours. At first they keep trying to get warm by straining to reach the top of the plate. All seems good now

    Does it show what temperature it is at and can you lower the temperature? I know with chicks you are suppose to lower the degrees by 5 each week. How can I tell if it is lowered or not?

    Its a great brooder/ heater. In heater mode. I have mine at 15 inches off the brooder floor and it’s still manage to stay at 80 degrees. 👍
    But unfortunately as a brooder the foot print is huge. Out of 15 chicks 6 died. I introduced every single one of them to water as I put them in the brooder. They all went underneath the brooder. 6 never came out. I didn’t realized it until it was to late. Totally my fault. As a first time chicken owner I didn’t know they would stay underneath the brooder and starve.

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад

      Oh no! Yes, I suggest having enough space that they can move in and out from under the brooder to cool off, get food, water and still stay warm. But the more you start working with chickens and animals the more you will learn. Keep it up!

    Which setting is hotter - brooder or heater?

    • @splitarrowfarm
      @splitarrowfarm  2 года назад +1

      It will be the same temperature but really matters more on the size of the chickens on how you can configure everything.

    Is there a danger the chicks may not venture out from underneath and end up dying from hunger and thirst?

      Good questions you will def want to make sure that you show them the food and water and they should be smart enough to venture out
