  • America is facing a long-overdue reckoning with the problem of police violence, as many call for police reform or defunding the police.
    In her new book, “Becoming Abolitionists: Police, Protests, and the Pursuit of Freedom,” author Derecka Purnell chronicles her own journey towards embracing the politics of police abolition.
    It goes through the history of slavery and imperialism, and then takes the reader back home to St. Louis to her own family and comrades. She writes about the intersections of issues, typically left out of abolition conversations, and why they must be included in our vision for 21st century abolition.
    Purnell joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to discuss why abolition is important.
    All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

    9 minute interview and not one second was spent talking about how you would handle rapist and murderers and thieves, if you get rid of all police. And that's why no one takes this seriously

    • @EntertheBlackDragon
      @EntertheBlackDragon 2 года назад +3

      A thief is caught only if you have evidence of the crime that has taken place, the same with rape and murder. Police don't arrest white rapists, murders or thieves. They often harass black people whom are minding their own business, not breaking any laws, or bothering anyone. A woman who has just been raped needs medical attention and a crisis councilor with education and experience. Not a cop with 6 months of training that has no idea what they are doing. A police officer has no formal education in crisis council, medical profession, and last I checked "detectives" find people and things that are missing and who has committed the crime by means of "investigation". They are discussing an abolishment of klan members that roam the streets killing men, women, and children who have committed no crime.

      @@EntertheBlackDragon so all these white mug shots and white guys in prison were people just being good citizens and turning themselves in? You just rendered your whole argument null and void when u try to claim that white people never get arrested

      Rapists and murders are a small percentage of people who interact with the police. The reality is, police have such a low clearance rate that rapists and murders aren't being handled now anyway. We can't dictate policy based on the extremes. The goal is to actually address the things that cause people to commit crimes, not throwing people in jail for everything. Isn't working harder to eliminate murder and rape altogether a much better goal than locking up as many as we can find? The role of police is to protect property and the elite and generate revenue by ticketing and imprisoning the poor.

      @@EargasmEnt rape and murder aren't a small percent of crimes committed just people not enough cops catch them, you over look the fact that serial assaults and murder are committed with other people aware of who commits them but choose not to tell,, but again these are details that get cast away by the kumbaya crowd

      @@jamalwest7658We're all entitled to an opinion but perhaps if you read some abolitionist literature you'd find some of the answers you seek. The system we have now does not serve us. Time to try something new. It ain't about a free for all. It's about taking the time to address the reasons why people do what we do so that we can prevent things from happening in the first place instead of trying to solve everything with prison. And conceding your point, rape and murder are extreme. So for now let's say we let the police continue to handle rapists and murderers but leave other things to be handled by a different set of professionals geared towards healing. What say you then?

    I have never seen an abolitionist talk about the vision of the future, Even this lady didn't fully go into the vision instead talked about universal child care BS would solve all issues. What does it look like in a city like Baltimore or Chicago with let's say 10% of the police? If a person is going to go and a drastic measure like this they must have a vision, they must have a idea of what works looks like. But they don't seem to express it for people to understand.
