I wish you would have called out the seller’s name, so we all could stay away from them! Thanks again Silver Seeker for sharing another great video!😊👍🏼 Lots of Love Bobbi 😊🙏🏼
I just inherited a sizeable collection and was elated when I found a rare 1847-CC Sitting Liberty in the stack (in excellent condition, save a bit of discoloration). I'm thinking he was duped by a dealer who slipped it into a tube of stuff to sell at a show. It took me a few days of research to realize it is indeed fake since CC Mint didn't open until 1870! ~ LoL Thanks for the info!
Got me nervous checking some of my old coin shop buys! Did some closer looks at a few that were in question., all set luckily! Thanks for this, very informative!
This video is exactly why I don't buy Morgan & Peace dollars. I just don't trust myself to spot the quality fakes. I am quite impressed with your detective work. Your visual example is night and day. Kudos. Perfectly happy to stick with what I know. ASEs
China is making high quality "rare" morgan fakes made from 90% silver, so the weight and dimensions are right. A legit seller would've had an 1879-cc slabbed by PCGS or NGC and priced it at circa $3000 assuming AU-55. I'll wager your friend paid a couple hundred for this coin and thought he was getting a real steal - which he ironically did!
I am looking to buy a "certified" CC Morgan from a dealer that is 64+. When they are cased in plastic by a grading company, would that be a foolproof way of buying a Morgan Dollar?
Great information, I'm going to a auction next week and that's valuable info. I do have experience with auctions since I'm a clerk for one but didn't know about the cast look on the lettering. Thanks a bunch
I know the Chinese flooded the market years ago and many collectors bought them before they realized they'd purchased fakes. Some people turned around and sold them on Ebay! I purchased a large number of morgans between 2005 and 2010. A friend of mine, a serious collector, told me not to buy any more morgans on Ebay, ever. He said it was too difficult to spot fakes without looking as close as you did. Excellent video. I suppose one of these days, I'll have an expert look over my morgans. It'd be a shame if they were all fakes. Some day...
Again I have to say this is the most informative information I have seen addressing counterfeiting coins. Thank you. I believe this will save a lot of people from being taken. And for the criminals out there, this is going to shut you down... 😂 haha
This is a good education. I don't have any morgans or peace dollars right now. I am only buying close to spot right now. I would like some silver dollars though to add to my collection. Good video!
This is why I exclusively buy Morgans and Peaces from verified American coin dealers nowadays - it costs a bloody ton to get them shipped and imported into the UK, but at least I can be sure they’re real!
This is the whole reason why I asked you what kind of scope you bought. I love Morgan’s, and eBay is a good place to get them. But I’m not getting taken
Another important question. My most recent purchase from local garage sale, from old man, was 5 Morgans: 1879 - 26.4 grams 1886 - 26.3 grams 1890 - 26.3 grams 1890 - 26.5 grams 1891 - 26.1 grams Those a bit under weight, but I think its normal, since those are not in uncirculated condition. But I still wanna know your opinion!? Everyone else can comment to my post as well. Lets talk!
I've learned something from you. What to look for when buying, I also boughyt a fake coin on Ebay, got my money back only after I had to open a claim against the buyer. And I kept the coin to always remind me not to buy coins on Ebay. Only in person .
Where can I purchase one of these magnified lights please comment back I have a lot of my father's old Coins I would like to go through please let me know and how expensive are these magnified lights
Yep you are 100% correct, the letters and stars on a Counterfeit Morgan look like there flat or 2 dimensional. On a real Morgan the letters and stars have more of a rounded look or 3 dimensional. That difference in appearance simply comes from how a Real Morgan is made compared to a Counterfeit Morgan. Real Morgan Silver Dollars are made using a metal die in a press, whereas a Counterfeit Morgan Silver Dollar is made using a sand mold and is cast. Simply said a Real Morgan is pressed or forged and a Counterfeit Morgan is cast or poured. I started and fell in love with collecting coins in 1985 when I was in the 7th grade i continued collecting coins thru my 24 years in the Marine Corps and still collect them today. It really disgusts me that the hobby I love so much has become yet another thing corrupted by greed to the point that you can't even buy coins anymore without worrying if the coin your spending your hard earned money on is Real or a Counterfeit.
So assuming it's a fake, would it be safe to assume no one would bother faking a coin that was only worth bullion price? I've started stacking recently, and if a coin passes the magnet and weight tests, I kinda figured I was safe. Maybe not?
Thanks for the great video ! I have gone through my silver from ebay and have found three fake bars and a fake morgan. I didn't catch the bars soon enough so no recouping from ebay! I'm done with ebay now and only buy from reputable mints
What did the calipers say for width of diameter and width of the coin? How do you think this coin was made? Cast, CnC machine...how...finally why buy on ebay at all? Cleaned, fake, damaged etc
Sure! www.ebay.com/itm/Andonstar-2MP-USB-Digital-Microscope-Video-otoscope-endoscope-loupe-camera-cam-/190984958025?hash=item2c77973049:g:BjwAAOxyB9RSzs8R I'll do a video on it sometime.
The lack of any noticeable bag marks was an instant red flag to my eyes, for an AU coin there should be some. Carson City dollars are usually bag marked quite a bit as most of them were transported around quite a bit.
Hey man, nice video! But I am not 100% sure if thats fake. Your facts are solid tho! We just need to evaluate more Morgans and especially from same year... Could you please tell me what you use to zoom in? Like camera only, or was it some kind of microscope? Thanks!
Wow that's amazing thank you for the post I learned a lot not going to buy any off of eBay

I would say, this is a rare coin, so they went all out and used real silver. A common date Morgan would only created to rob you of the metal. This is easy to detect with a scale, or your local coin dealer with a precious metal analyzer. I got such a great deal of a lot of peace dollars, one looked completely dull grey. In the description the seller said that it looked as if it had been sanded down. I took a chance, because eBay has a foolproof return system. I brought the coins to my neighborhood comic and coin shop, and he thought that that was a fake. I made Italy put in a return with eBay, and could have sent it back. It weighed perfectly on the scale though, at my house, so I brought it to a more high-end coin store with a metal analyzer. It was 90% silver, so I kept it. There are also very reputable dealers on eBay like mbarrcoins, coinexchange, and others. Just one bad review would destroy their entire business, or greatly reduce their sales, so I would say there's almost no risk with those types of dealers.
Today is 11/03/20019. There are so many well made counterfeit Morgans, you will need to do the sound test, size measurement, weight test, magnetic test, and the laptop with 100X USB microscope test................... Anything worth more than $300 needs to be slabbed. But wait, there are many counterfeit slabbed coins too!! What next?
Fantastic question Walter! No, I didn't actually. I did compare it to a known real dollar though and it was identical in diameter and thickness. But that is a fantastic idea regardless, thank you!
I also noticed that the fake coin looks too much like a modern planchette was used - too smooth, no ‘cartwheels’ like you’d expect from a Morgan or Peace.
If I had to guess, I would think they cast the elements used to make the die, and then polished the fields area of the die. That would address the smoothness of the fields, and cast-look of the letters and face.
The dead give away for me was the Date ! On the fake the date is almost straight across from first to last digit, on the real one (1889) the date is rounded with the rim. I've been coin collecting for 60 years it just comes natural to me.

I sell a lot on ebay but don't buy much because of the fakes out there. I have one dealer I have been buying from for several yrs now and have yet to get any fakes. but as you were flipping that fake back and forth I could tell just from the sound of it that something wasn't right. sounds like aluminum and the letters look almost like they were just built up on the coin with a mig/tig welder, don't remember which one you can use for it. good vid, keep up the good work. ;)
Actually the coins weight is perfect and it's actually Silver... if it were aluminum it would be like a 4th of the weight of a normal dollar. You're right about the letters tho.
I tried all the test Size thickness won't stick to a magnet cant see copper so I don't know if my 1897s morgan is fake or not I got it from China for 2.95 looks old as it should the ad had it as a found coin and thought it real
what does it mean when i place a magnet on a coin and it sticks yes i got some bars from and good company but yet the pure said .999 silver should a magnet stick my other silver coins and bars dont stick are them fakes
Maybe compare the exact same coin, from the same mint, with the exact date? Yeah, I know it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, but before you scare the masses about fake Morgan’s, wait until you can make a correct judgement.
I purchased 25 semi rare Morgan Dollars from a trusted friend. All 25 passed the weight test, magnet test. However, I learned all 25 were fake after stacking five of the newly purchased Morgan's against five comparable real Morgans. The fake stack of 5 was 2 millimeters higher when compared to my genuine Morgans.
Theres an app called bullion test it works great. I use to weigh and caliper measure everything. This app always got it right on. Cept had a problem with old brittanias in sterling
these fakes cost 80 dollars a piece and come from Romania. They mostly sell them through German collection sites and they're very widespread already. They're selling these by the thousands for over a decade already. I've bought 2 to do some testing to actually recognize them and there's always the same 3 flaws in the coins for which you don't need a scope to see.
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have 2 morgans. To the eye, a really nice 1879-O. Also to the eye, a really nice 1887-S. After watching your video a few times I now think something is not right with the 1879. The 1887 I believe is ok. All the letters are crisp. Very easy on the eye.(I'm using only a 10x Lupe) every thing on it has a clean, sharp edge. The 1879 on the other hand, when I look at the letters my eyes want to look away. Difficult to look at after looking at the 1887 even though the 1879 has slightly more detail. Also the 1879 has what almost looks like a soldier flow around some of the letters and edge of the hat.(wierd). Also the 1879 feels slightly bigger in diameter and looks slightly thicker and weighs part of a gram more. My scale doesn't show 1/10 grams, only grams. Also, on the 1879 there appears to be what looks like little tiny outward bubbles like little water blisters on the flat amongst the stars. So, I think, this really nice 1879-o may very well be a fake,,,,, an imposter..
My mother had bought us kids a set of 5 of these coins from a MINT and I would like to check it out also it has this same coin in it please comment back thank you so very much for this video

Awesome video and it couldn’t have been timed better. I’m about to go in a coin shop
the CC mintmark is a dead giveaway because all the 1879 cc coins MM are left of center. the right C is directly under the knot of the bow.

Not all counterfeit coins are made from castings. They can be pressed like a real coin by using transfer dies.
It's cast with some hand polished fields. You can see the cross hatching in the fields

If I had to guess, I would think they cast the elements used to make the die, and then polished the fields area of the die. That would address the smoothness of the fields, and cast-look of the letters and face.
Please look at the reeded side edge. Does it have the appearance of a two or three layered silver sandwich?
Around the 7:35 mark, you can see that they polished the fields of the die. See all of the little striations?

Pitting on a coins surface could be the result of being dipped in Tarn-x to clean it. I found out the hard way about this.
